Serious answer - Tell him regular paint thinner (mineral spirits) on a rag. Won't hurt the plastic and softens the adhesive. Afterward, clean with Dawn detergent to get rid of the smell and oiliness from the thinner.

P.S. Another serious answer for him: if he has no solvents around one can usually get tape residue off by rubbing hard with a towel for a while.

P.P.S. I put tape on dice when playtesting prototype board games. I put tape on ... wait for it ... DICE CHIPS for the same reason.
