Just looking through some chips and I came up with this little weirdo. What’s going on here? I don’t have a lot of LCVs to compare this to, but I know they’re not all like that, with the recess bumping right up against the brim. I know we see that on some chips with a bigger sized inlay - some of the Casablancas have that larger size inlay that rubs the brims. But this chip has a small inlay. And an unreasonably large recess. Weird.

is it possible that the top cup of the mold was different for each inlay size to enable texturing on the inlay when that was an option and that the wrong size was used?
I’m not sure I know exactly what you’re saying. But for what it’s worth, here’s the other side - it’s got the same large recess.
And I’m not sure if it’s relevant to your point, but I don’t think textured inlays were ever an option; I think they were standard, right up until they weren’t? But that’s just a guess.

Looks like the wrong cups were used at least once (chips get pressed twice). Probably discovered quickly and corrected, so no additional chips made this way.

Speculation

That’s a transitional mold that appeared for a short time after Paulson deepened the recess of the LCV mold but before the introduction of smooth inlays.

Early days
Paulson LCVs have a shallow recess. Eventually SCV is introduced with a relatively deep recess. Both molds produce textured inlays.

intermediate days
Paulson decided to modify the LCV mold creating the textured deep recess version. That’s what produced the chip you show. There are a handful of casinos with these version chips. IMO this mold looks bad. They cut into the hats making the recess area wider not just deeper.

Later days
With the introduction of the alphadot and other micro printing security features, textured inlays are replaced with smooth inlays. Paulson remade the LCV mold restoring the hats they cut off, keeping the deep recess with a smooth inlay. Chips start being produced with LCV, SCV, LCV on one side and SCV on the other, or a mixture of all 3.

Was gonna make a thread about this and other hat/cane variations, but I’m lazy and haven’t looked up the dates and collected details for it to be truly useful. Based on my observations.

So this is the mold used to produce some of the Casablanca chips (only with larger smooth inlays)?

Like this one?

It looks like a deep recess and smooth inlay (w/ alphadot). But the recess doesn’t cut into the hats. So not a modified version of the LCV deep recess textured mold. Perhaps early examples of the LCV deep recess smooth mold?

No, not that version. There are several Casablanca $5, $25, and $100 chip versions that have oversize inlays.

Ok, it’s probably these then. While the inlay makes some the hats look cut off the mold is the same as the chip I posted above, LCV deep recess smooth.
