As mentioned in an introduction post on PCF, I am a long-time poker player, new time chipper. I've jumped in head first and said fuck it, I love poker and I appreciate the chips that are available, therefore, I'll drop some money in the hopes of finding people that love what I love. I don't yet appreciate the lingo (Snappers and Murdered), and I don't yet understand why Fracs are so valuable to everyone (I get why the HSI $500's are so valuable, these chips are awesome but, why are the $0.25 one's so valuable other than scarcity?). But I assume everyone here loves to play poker and I look forward to getting to know people. I know it takes a long time on a forum like this, but I look forward to it. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Snappers are $2.50 chips. they are relics from a time when casinos had $5 black jack and also paid 3-2 on blackjack.

Murder is when you intentionally remove an inlay from a chip and replace it with a sticker. Often this is done to create a custom set, or to add a demonization to a casino set that is missing a a particular denomination. Some chips can just be labled over without removing the original inlay. This, removing the original inlay is considered “full murder”.

Murder can also refer to milling out a recess on a hot stamped chip so it will accept a laminated sticker. This practice is occasionally controversial depending on the rarity of the victim chip.

...... I don't yet understand why Fracs are so valuable to everyone.........

How many home games do you think use fracs? How many home games do you think use $500 chips?
This sort of explains it, but I'll buy to expand a bit more....

Lots and lots of home games play at a level where a fractional chip is useful, but fractional chips are almost never seen live in a Casino or Card Room therefore there is an imbalance in supply and demand for fractionals.

Nuisance: some people appear to be overly entitled and like to complain about every perceived slight and offense, trying to win the internet in the form of being the victor-in-their-own-mind of petty arguments in a public chip collecting forum. I find these people annoying in their self-righteousness, but the internet has many of these people. It's also full of grammar policemen {or my personal favorite: the "grammer" (sic) police]. ;)

Nuance: Most nuances in the chipping world involve minor differences in chip attributes, such as: subtle weight differences between leaded vs. non-leaded chips; differences in molds such as THC (i.e., with outside protective ring) vs. RHC (i.e., with hats right next to the edge); types of inlays such as Grand vs. Giant vs. Standard; primary vs. secondary authentic casino chips; fantasy vs. real casino vs. Not-A-Group-Buy (NAGB) vs. For-Profit-Venture (PFV) chips; 39mm vs. 36mm vs. 43mm vs. 50mm (Fat Hat and Cane) oversized; chip manufacturer such as Gaming Partners International (GPI/Paulson) vs. Classic Poker Chips (CPC) customs vs. TRKing (TRK), etc. What's the best chip to collect? Probably the one that speaks to you personally, for whatever reason.

My advice is to get out there and meet your fellow PCFers, ideally at a multi-day poker-playing gathering hosted by a member near you (i.e., "meetup"). Break down the internet walls and learn who some of your fellow PCFers really are. There are some great people here, just looking to have a fun time at a poker table with others who understand their particular chip obsession. "Winning" a meetup isn't measured by profits or trophies, it's measured by stories and friendships. To me, the same is true for the forum itself. Welcome and Happy Thanksgiving!

Great post! I honestly never knew this place and community existed until I was searching for gifts for my best man/groomsmen and decided upon a set of decent poker chips for each. I watched Hobbyphillic's Youtube channel for some chip reviews and he mentioned this board quite a few times. This is quite the nicely run message board compared to other ones I've seen through the years. Like the OP, I prob have a few more questions like his, cool to see the responses here helping out.
