Being close to ordering a set and looking forward to future GBs, I have my artwork ready for chips. I typically don't ever see people custom order chips with $2,$2.50,3 or $10 denoms but obviously these exist in casinos.

When would you ever need those when the amount can be accomplished using more of a smaller denom? Maybe I'm missing the point but I also assume it's more efficient to order less denoms and more lower chips as well.

Just a thought I had and was thinking about.

$10s in a casino are somewhat uncommon, but are used in poker at times. $2 and $3 are routinely used for poker (fixed limit games, or for the rake/drop). $2.50s are "snappers" used to payout a blackjack at a $5 bet table and a 3:2 payout.

Some custom sets have some of these values made, primarily based on what the owner's game might be (there are a few custom sets here that have plenty of $2 chips).

Hope this helps explain why some values exist, at least in the casinos.

Casino have all kind of denom because they had lot of different stake and games in casinos

We tend to go for 4x-5x increasement for efficiency and also we tend to use them only for poker and rarely for other game

It will be a much different breakdown for another game example like Blackjack

TL;DR - Casinos (At least the American ones, anyway) aren't using $2, $2.50, $3, or $10 for big bet poker games, and neither should anybody else.

We love chips so we find ways to use them later!

But for limit games 2.5$ and 2$ chips often make sense in homegames

Fixed-limit games work well when the small bet / big bet is a multiple of a single chip, e.g. a $6/$12 game using $2 chips.

No-limit and pot-limit games work well when the chips go up in 4x and 5x increments, i.e. the classic 1 / 5 / 25 / 100 progression. They also work well using the much less common 1 / 5 / 10 / 50 / 100 progression, but that progression is less efficient in terms of how many chips you need to buy.

Here, "work well" means that it's easier to place bets, easier to count the pot, easier to split the pot. There's less mental arithmetic needed, less counting, and less handling of chips.

THAT SAID - you can also play poker JUST FINE using weird combinations of denominations. Giving people stacks of $1, $2, $5, $10, and $25 isn't necessary and isn't efficient but it's not going to get in the way of people having a good time. Why would you do that, though? Answer: MOAR CHIPS. Making a custom set is an act of artistic expression, not simply a purchase of utilitarian objects. If you're so inclined, you might enjoy expressing your creativity by designing a complete line-up which includes the less common chips you sometimes find in casinos, and then having designed them, go ahead and put them into play on your table.

People have made custom sets with denominations such as 12.5c, $13, and $1.75 because it suited their fancy.

Go ahead. It's not against the rules. There are no rules.

Well, all the casinos in AC and Vegas that host BARGE gatherings have tons of pink snappers to host our $7.50/$15 tables! Typically at least 30 racks per table...
Right, I think that’s very cool. But those are fixed limit games, right? Using chips that the typical $1/$1 NLHE home games wouldn’t need.

12.5 cent chips.

I like the idea of having just one barrel of some ridiculous denomination to spread around a cash game. I could see players having some fun with $13 chips.

We typically only get a few hundos into play so bigger chips aren’t needed.

However, I do want a custom cash set with a $415 chip instead of $500s. 415 being the SF area code

I see $10 chips in the 5/10 at Bellagio and the wynn. Those are big bet games.

I mean if we’re getting crazy, there’s a guy in my .25/.50 game who loves betting $1.75, so I had some chips made for him. But again, not recommended for casinos or your home game.
