The Poker Boom Is Gone. Really. (1 Viewer)

What are the laws? I know SA it's legal as long as there is no rake. Which is why I will open a "card room" and order some Paulsons to use in it ;)

Unfortunately, any home game involving any cash (rake or not) is illegal in Tasmania. I don't know why but I believe the Federal Group are perhaps holding too much power in the State and pollies probs have their hands in their pockets so we're all forced to play at their casinos instead. I might be wrong about that theory. But the law remains :(

There was a bust a year or two ago in Launceston where a guy was prosecuted for hosting a $50 buy-in tourney. Police found out about it on social media.

It is still limited to $1000 on a table between all home players and I would have to read it well to make sure what that means. It probably makes any PCF meat up type tournaments and circus games illegal due to cash limits in the law.

Time to invest in micro stakes chips and play them as 10x value...

"No, officer... That's a 1 cent chip, not $1 "

Just looked back at as post on here from July and I said my game is 'booming' right now.

Now may 2016, my game is on life support it seems
Funny how it comes and goes in waves

Bump of an old thread discussing MD home game law for an update...

Home games are now legal in Maryland as long as less than $1,000 is in play, no rake, and players are "known" to each other somehow. Gov signed the bill today, after it passed both chambers unanimously.

I listed to an interview with the delegate that wrote the legislation. He had tried to get this passed for years, and it suddenly gained a bit more momentum when a game at an old folks home got broken up by cops in the senate leader's district.

Just saw that on a friend's facebook post yesterday. I guess it's a step in the right direction, but the $1000 overall limit wouldn't have helped make the game I used to host weekly in Mo.Co legal (despite the fact that I never took a cent in rakes). Then again, I'll be honest, I never gave hosting a non-raked game a second thought when it came to the legality. I was always under the impression that law enforcement had better things to do than break up a non-raked game between consenting adults. :)

The easy way around the money is to use something like a show em chip worth 100 or 500. Only the players know the value and when the cash gets above 1000, those bills go in another place that isn't the bank.

Well I don't play the kind of stakes at home games where the amount is going to be an issue. If they had kept the $500 limit before the amendment, there might be an issue at times. The original bill was written with $2000 but after amendments and conference committee negotiation it went up and down and eventually settled at $1000.

I think the amounts aren't really a problem when it comes to enforcement. The biggest thing is the legality of throwing a non-raked game is on the books. Whereas before, you could face imprisonment and fines for a 5c/10c game that wasn't even raked. It wasn't really enforced, but it was illegal.

I played at a game last night and every single guy knew about the signing. I asked if anyone thought there were people who didn't play because it was technically illegal. No one thought so, but I'm not so sure. I'm hoping more people will be willing to play a home game now, which helps bring new blood to the table.

"House Bill 127 (Delegate Reznik, et al.)
Ways and Means Budget and Taxation

This bill allows an individual who is at least 21 years old to conduct a home game involving
wagering if the home game (1) is limited to Mah Jong or a card game; (2) is conducted not
more than once a week in the individual’s home or in a common area of a residential
property that is restricted to residents age 55 or older; (3) allows a player to compete
directly against one or more other players who share a preexisting social relationship;
(4) does not allow an individual to benefit financially in any way, directly or indirectly,
other than from the winnings accrued by participating as a player in the game; and (5) has
a $1,000 limit on the total amount of money, tokens representing money, or any other thing
or consideration of value that may be wagered by all players during any 24-hour period.
The home game may not involve a player’s use of an electronic device that connects to the
Internet, the use of paid public advertising or promotions, the charging of specified fees,
or the use of any money except money used for wagering."

Effective October 1, 2016.

I just came across this thread and I was thinking the same thing. So I got off my ass and started hosting home tournaments and cash games. My kids play baseball and football, so I have a solid number of dads that are regulars at the table. I also have a solid number of guys from work that have been wanting to get the games going again.

I host once a month on a rotating basis, baseball dads then fire department guys. Its been working out great. At either game I have no less than 6 and up to 11 at the table. We play .25-.50 NL, nothing to crazy and the best thing is if you bust out, there's always a chance to get your money back the next go round (you know from the last time I stick it in you).

Whoever said that when your kids get older the games will start up again was spot on. I had about a 5-6 year break that I just couldn't have a game. Having four young boys at the time it was tough. Now I have them wanting to join in on the fun. However they are not ready for the table talk. And this is dads time....

I found ^this to be a bit odd. Reasoning?

When I read that I wondered if it meant "can't involve" as in I'm not suppose to use my phone to browse PCF while playing or "can't involve" as in the game requires the use of an electronic device as part of the game.

Obviously your little panties are in a wad.

And funny thing is, you're still wrong and too ignorant to see it.

Maybe if you got a more aggressive looking avatar, that wouldn't happen to you.

BG - can you clear something up? I was under the impression that your panties were rather large. Can you just quickly give us your size so we can put this matter to rest?

Plenty of room, thanks for asking. And my guitar is worth more than a dime, too. :)
