The Poker Boom Is Gone. Really. (1 Viewer)

I'm with OP... four of the last six home games I've played were in Wisconsin, Louisville, Atlanta and Detroit

We started playing poker monthly in 2005. The games were good for many years. Great friends, beer, good food. And best of all, good poker STT's. For years. Then people started getting married. And breeding. No more poker, not so often. About three years ago we were forced to start playing only every other month. Then came my divorce. STT's stopped. Group split. This year we have played cash games for three times only, with 5-6 people. Luckily all from our former group of players. This Saturday, only one guy will show up. So, we'll play cash game heads-up, drink beer, get drunk. And either one of us will lose all of his money to the other one. Hope the winner will be me.

Where/How does this all end? Next year we might be playing checkers with play money.
A sad story and much like mine. Had a regular (often weekly) poker round between 2007 and 2012, but sadly no more home games since then :( I'm afraid for many people here in Germany poker was no more than a short-lived fashion. Let marriage/children/job get in their way and they quit completely instead of occasionally hosting a home game every now and then. I sold off most of my once 20 sets and I am down to three now. Will they ever see some action again?

hosting again on July 10th. Wife is gone, guest bedroom is yours if you want to make the road trip again.

During the boom I had monthly tournaments with 5 tables and was turning guys away. Then slowly 4,3,and finally barely enough for 2 tables(13) until that too dwindled to 7 or 8 every other month and then it just died altogether. Now semi annual games of 12 to 16 good friends are about all we can muster.

Sadly my love for the game and chips has not dimmed so I keep buying and selling hoping and waiting for the revival. 5 awesome tournament and 1 cash game set are just sitting in my basement aching to be played.

Taking the kiddos hiking/zip lining in New York that weekend but thanks for the offer :)

I'm more into 8-game and 10-game tourneys now. The WSOP Dealer's Choice event this year listed 19 games!

You should enter the Dealer's Choice next year. I had the best time ever at the table :).

In fact, I would like to see everyone who likes mixed games to join me next year. Maybe we can start a whole new poker boom, but now for mixed games iso NLHE. :D

I think I have played about 16 of those games. I've heard of BADACY and BADUCY, but never looked them up. This is definitely a possibility next year. Maybe someone can host an event to play these games among ourselves to practice up.

Well I was supposed to have 18 show up Sat for the two table tourney but only 16 were left by game time. Sadly though only 14 showed. 2 were no shows.
One of the no shows was someone who my good friend and regular vouched for who he met at the local electronic poker tables in town.I sent an email out to this guy today saying 'hey thats not too cool to not give me any notice you cant make it'. He got back to me tonight and said ''Ya I feel terrible about it ...jk, actually wait no, I dont.. Ha'' . UNREAL. Cant believe people are like this.

He is coming off the list!!! Ah the perils of running a home game. Sometimes you just have to deal with stupid shit.

Originally, our group age range was mostly 20-30 yr olds. They had kids and disappeared. Not just from poker, but for the most part from our lives altogether. Players in this age bracket really lose "their" time as it becomes all about the children. Now our game is bursting at the seams. We have cut our invite list by 1/2 just to keep it down to 2 tables. The big difference: the mode range is 40-50. We also only play once every 6 weeks because of my work schedules, and the old axiom "keep them wanting more" is a good thing.

I think you answered your own question.

Wait until the kids are older, and those same folks will be coming back to poker.

This is what I found. Once kids came along, poker goes either to the back seat or off completely. I'm just getting back on the horse.

Toby's idea is a good one, I'll agree. Years ago I started up a forum online for arranging games in my local state (in Aus) and printed out some basic business cards and handed them out at the local casino. It worked well. We met new players. Got sharked once or twice haha. But had more game options. Funny how poker games come and go though.

Well shucks, it happened to me, finally had to cancel a game after 4 years of hosting because of low attendance. Only had 3 people for last nights game so I cancelled it Sat morning.

Hope it was just the nice weather and just a freak occurrence that no one could play

Kinda common in the summertime, people going on vacation or just out. I'm in Florida so kinda summer all the time, had 10 booked and one on the wait list for my game last night, then had a last minute cancel, couldn't reach the wait-lister and had a no-show to drop to 8 players.

I'll have my next cash game on August 1st. Let's see how many players I can get coming in for game.

I've been trying to get a game going at my place now for a good 6+ months. Have sent an invite out each month to a fairly large group of players. Some that I have played with in the past from other games or two old leagues, plus friends that I know play. I've gotten only two game s to run. I decided to join meetup.com and look for other local poker games, play in some, and over time see if I can find some new people to invite to expand my list. I've been to one meetup game so far, and there were some solid players there, but I didn't bring up my attempts at a game yet because I don't want people to think I'm trying to poach.

Several years ago, there were games every weekend that were running multiple tables, cash games, tournaments, everywhere. I think a lot of factors led to the decline and around here I know a specific reason has been the opening of several casinos in the area. Lots of guys I used to play with that were the big draws at a couple games not have been playing in the card rooms and not in the home games.

For my game, I've been wondering if my night selection could be better; like run a game on a different night than Saturdays. Weeknights though I get home pretty late, since I have a long commute and I wonder if the more casual players wouldn't come out late and stay late on worknights. I'm curious though if people will play Sunday nights in the fall if I'm showing SNF on the TVs in the basement. I might try that in the fall.

In the meantime, I'm continuing to just work on the game room. I've got another table ready to build, but won't do it until I get some more players.

I got 9 for this Friday. All work guys looking for a night to drink pretty much. It's been since February for that group.

Yesterday morning I had 17 "confirmed." Over the course of the day I gained 4, lost 5 for a final total of 16. People are flaky, poker is strictly recreational for most, and expecting your players to take it as seriously as you do (as a good host/PCFer) is unrealistic. Stuff happens and sometimes games have to be canceled - but there's always another game. [emoji6]

I joined some meetup groups after moving to Florida and contacted the group owners to let them know that I was not only interested in playing, but also able to host as well. You might find (like I did) that they're looking for other people to host extra events each month. Usually they'll want you to attend an event or a few first so they can meet you and make sure you'll represent their group well as an organizer, but doesn't hurt to approach them right off the bat in a friendly, helpful way. You could get access to the entire playerbase they've built and be able to get your game running more regularly, just within their group so you aren't stepping on toes.

I have 18 confirmed for my game next weekend, with 3 "maybes" and 2 more still yet to reply. This is all without opening it up to our "B-List" invites. As Ben said, players are flaky when it comes to poker commitment. There is always a chance people will miss.

Getting only 3 players is kind of like getting pocket kings and flopping KKx. All -in, vs AA and Turn-Rivering A, A. The stars have to line up against you, but sometimes that crap happens.

As for poaching from a meet-up; I took 3 players from a meet-up, then the host. Zombie chips on poker tables >>> Dice chips on foldouts.

Should have a full table tonight for $1/2. We play 1-2 times a month. Most of my players either don't have kids or they are teenagers. Kids sports sometimes gets in the way, mine included.

When I hosted a $10 buying game it was always getting cancelled for players canceling at the last minute. Much happier now.

I have noticed Friday night is usually better than Saturday or Sunday if you have players with kids activities or people who want to use the weekend for summer activities.

I agree. This is what works for me as well. Meetup right after work (around 6) and play till early morning. Then everyone has the rest of weekend to do their shit. I used to try Sat. but gave up on that fairly quickly.

My Friday game for next week already has the most signed up this early this year (15 as of now). I now consider mine full at 20, though I will accommodate 30. I play Fridays because of a lack of other games close that play on Friday. My schedule is set many months in advance, and I think that helps.

I also play in a Saturday game once a month. It's a little smaller. They don't schedule quite the same way I do, and they have to reschedule or cancel from time to time. I think the lack of advanced scheduling hurts them the most, but the day probably hurts some. I know players sometimes come to mine with plans to leave for a family activity the next day. Those doing family activities for the weekend don't come to the Saturday game.

The night that works best is going to vary from one group to the next. Monthly games work best IMO if someone can put it on the schedule months in advance. They can plan family stuff around that date. That doesn't work though if they count on a date that gets moved on short notice. And they won't schedule around the game in the future since they can't count on that game happening.

.....wtf

because only people who are well off deserve nice things....
Not what I am getting at.

Saying you are giving these people something where they have no idea how nice of a product that they are playing with.

I know you didn't mean anything by it, and I understand what you meant. But maybe he can be the catalyst for their appreciation for the finer things in poker life.

I do a lot of work helping the homeless in my community, and I just saw the pics of your very expensive poker room, that no one i know could afford.

Im sure you can understand my reaction.
