Just seeking a bit of feedback from people, I’m less concerned with the colors and style because that’s all individual taste. What I’m trying to look for is people’s preference to table style and what has the best functionality in your experience.
My former table didn’t have any drink holders, I did this to try and discourage drinks at the table… but quickly realised most people like to drink while playing. This meant I had to put tables around the table so people had somewhere to put their drink and to avoid the risk of spillage. Anyway. Bad table.
Moving forward I’m not sure whether to get a firm outer ring and have the drink holders in that, or, whether to have drink holders in the arm rests themselves.
Have people played with that firm outer ring before that sits inside the arm rest? Is it a good idea, or do you think just arm rests with the drink holders and felt? It does maximise playing area.
I’ve also seen variants that have the arm rests with the drink holders and the firm outer ring. Pictures attached for reference.
My old table (all blue)
Table with drink holders in arm rests
And table with drink holders in a firm outer ring

Also, if I get slammed for the ABS chips, I do have a few excuses, but appreciate it’s kinda sacrilege.
Forgive me chipping fathers.

Interested in hearing opinions on this as well. I like the cupholders in the racetrack, but in the arm rests might be better. although if you have a full table then drinks in either spot may get in the way.

We use the slide under the rail drink holders. That way whoever needs them can grab one. I'm not a fan of the holders in the rail or on the race track. Depending on your table build and design though these might not work if you can't slide them under.

Go to the table subforum:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/forums/poker-tables-seating-and-furniture.14/

and search "cupholders"

Then sit back and enjoy 10 hours worth of reading :) Lots of "discussion" and banter on the topic.

(ps - cupholders in the rail, placed directly in front of the player, is the correct answer.....)
Haha thanks I’ll have a look. I guess, while it was about that, it was also querying what people prefer playing with - ie a solid outer inside the arm rest that creates a natural betting line. Or. All felt.

Have some links to sellers?

Just curious why the table without cup holders, with side tables for drinks wasn’t to your liking. From what I have read on this forum, that setup seems to be the preferred setup by many (including myself). Did you not have quite enough space for the side tables, or did you just not like the side tables for another reason?

That's usually referred to as a "racetrack". You'll likely find most on this forum don't like them.

THIS! Hate cupholders on the table. These are okay. Vegas doesn't do it, and who knows better than them! Side tables! Even if you buy those real nice small ones like casinos use. Theoratically you should only need a maximum of 4 side tables because they are shared.

Matter of preference. They’ve worked well for my group for 15 years and they are essentially locked into place under the rail. I’ve seen people run into and knock over side tables. Just because Vegas uses them does t mean it’s the Bible of what to do.

Knock a side table, poker felt is fine...hate when cups get in the way of the action, or spills on the felt. Vegas isn't the bible, but they have ran poker games for a long time, their the experts is all. But you are right matter of preference! Thought this was an opinion thread! Cheers :)

Thanks, just reminded to order some of these!

While the start of the night isn’t typically an issue, it doesn’t take long before people do start to put their drinks on the table. So I’m left either letting it go, or, what I typically do, give them the raised eye brow until they realise what they’re doing. I feel like a bit of a buzz kill, and even though I’m yet to have a table spill, feel like I’m rolling the dice more without a cup holder - cause people do precariously place their drinks on the arm rest.

So I went back and forth with the idea of no cup holders in the table. Decided on the cup holders in the armrest and no race track (never was a fan of them). Very happy with my decision.

Major factor was that I did not want to clutter up the space with drink carts or snack tables.

That is a nice table. Think I’m doing the same.

Hey mate,

I'm building a table at the moment and have also decided to go cupholders in the rail.

Firstly, my friends who will come and play poker, will want to drink. I went back and forth on having side tables, but then I've also seen plenty of times where people will pick up their drink and have a sip and then suddenly action is on them, and because it's convenient, they put it down on the table 'momentarily'...and that's when the spills occur. I don't want to be the guy that has people over for a fun time, and then i'm having to nag all night to keep their drinks off the table. No fun for me or them.

I ended up doing the double stage thing with jumbo and small cupholders, which means they're nice and deep and a standard beer bottle sinks all the way down, not even possible to spill from bumping it etc. And having right in front of the players, it's obvious where their drink must go.

Hotly debated topic though, gotta do what works for you and your game

This was exactly my experience with the side tables. Plus if space is at a premium it’s just more furniture and inconvenience.
My table is getting built now. Cups in the rail.
Can’t wait.

Nice chairs

How would one go about doing the double stage cup holders? Can you buy them or do they have to be made?

Let me just say that while I haven’t used the double stage cup holders, I’ve used jumble cup holders plenty. And I’m pretty sure those double stage ones are a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. Eveb though you can tip a beer bottle inside of one, it won’t fall over or spill. I suppose if the beer was completely full, open but unsipped, and you tipped it inside a jumbo cup holder, I could imagine some beer splashing out the top. But I haven’t seen it happen. And I’ve tipped a few beers.
