Been lurking the Classified threads and I must say my must have/favorite chip has changed so many times. How did the old timers create their setup? Did you get the coolest (in your eyes) chip of that denomination and therefore have different molds in your set. You try to create a harmony/combo that looks the coolest together? help a newbie aound

Welcome to PCF !
What do you mean, trying to create a full custom set with a good lineup ? Or trying to buy existing chips that match together ?

I just see that your are not new here sorry
Also I see that you are from Brussels like me, where are you located (quelle commune) ?

It’s a journey.

You’ll find your way as you go, and have a blast doing it.

Myself, I fell in love with two sets. @FDLmold and his RatRod set, and the MaverickR set.

I made my own version of FDLs and went all hot stamps (HotRod), and slowly built it in the likeness of my favorite set on earth.

You’ll evolve and change as you go, but that’s part of the fun!

Enjoy!

I received stellar advice at the ChipBoard. Those guys are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful towards newbies and set collectors.

Do you mix the yellows (with different edgespots) in game?

Most of us that have sets that are considered unobtainable have had them for a very long time & just held on to them. A few have just paid dearly for that same right.

I remember thinking that both hot stamps and the TR King scrown mold were both ugly/boring. Years later I have a large set of TRK HS that I'll never sell and lots of people here would be very jealous of.

I think you just have to start buying chips. To me, there is no substitute for having the chips in hand. Unfortunately this can turn into an expensive experiment, but it'll be a fun one.

You have not given us much info about how much you are willing to spend or what game you play & how many players etc so I won't go into specifics.

Most people start out thinking they want something really nice for their 6 person once a month game that they have been hosting with dice chips. The thought is something like "hey I'm going to splurge and spend a couple hundred bucks and get something really nice". They find this place and see that a couple hundred bucks is only going to get you into the upper part of the low end of chips.

What you want & what you can afford or what you are willing to spend do not always fit together so I'll suggest getting samples. A barrel of 4 or 5 different types of chips will really help you solidify what you want/can live with.

Once you are happy with what you have, just sell the sample barrels or if you are feeling generous, give em away. The new guy will be grateful.

This is an intresting question, and I read it two ways; a how did you come up with your set, how did you discover what chips you liked / wanted? and I think this has been answered. It takes time and 'exposure ' as @Quicksilver-75 stated. Which plays to the age old answer, get samples.

We as a forum mostly suggest waiting at least a year before diving into customs, even if you don't its fine because they won't be created for about a year anyways as its a long wait, it'll give you some time to make changes.

The more technical of 'how' which is the second way I read your question, would be ...

I created several base color selections using the tool, and I think starting with base colors you like is key, getting that nailed down is a big step. I think most people pick a single chip and try to build around it, which you can do and still hash out the base colors of the other chips.

I got lucky and bought and sold my way in to almost free very very used jockey mold CPC solid chips, 170 red and a mix of those and old paranoid pokerchips.
I'm mostly looking to upgrade per denomination and not a whole set in one.

So I was looking at the longer term effects of these purchases for creating a set vs a frankenstein collection (which might work too). Since I'm in europe It's harder because of shipping so trial and error is less attractive.

We only play NLH €30 initial buyin, avg buy in would be 80 at the end. We just agree on value of chip, so no denom or wrong denom wouldn't be a problem.

I used the chip designer to create the edge spot pattern on both of my custom sets CPC and cards mold. U made up the label design myself from a grade 10 art project I found on a old rw/CD. Then using that B&W I lazily chose a font I liked and tried my best to place a name and denomination around the sloth character I chose to use. As per why the sloth club? My grandparents used to refer to things like playing cards, slacking in the basement with friends etc.. was the meeting of the sloth club. It's not so much as a feature of the animal it is more metaphorical about the deadly sin of Sloth. Thus the designs are simple and old fashioned. Thanks to the members who helped me transfer/convert the files/designs over to the appropriate .AI files.
My only regret it that the $10 in my CPC set should have been white (not pure white). For some reason I chose light blue on the middle scale blue for my $1 and the dark blue for my $10...it looked fine on the online tool. Maybe one day I'll replace it with a new rack. They work well as $10 buy in chips for the cards mold set, non playable except for purchasing regular chips in play. So CPC's can be used for $10 or $10x? For bigger/side games, or for players that want to budget in a cash game to pre buy what they intend to be able to gamble then put then into play as they would cash for rebuys at face value. As if it were a $10 bill, except the bill is already in the bank from the time the $10 was issued.
Likewise I have $20's in my cards hold set that can serve the same purpose in the cards mold set. Really any denom could be played as my CPC and Cards mold sets are essentially primary/secondary sets of the same theme.

Unlike a lot of set collectors, I usually just have one cash set that’s big enough to be playable for a full table. And almost always Paulsons.
When I was new, my first set was from a ChipRoom sale - Horseshoe Clevelands. Then I figured out that I didn’t care for casino used RHCs.
In building my next set, a mixed casino set, I learned that I preferred THC mold chips over RHCs, and leaded chips over the more modern unleaded clay formula.
I’ve had a few sets of mixed casino leaded THCs over the years. I’ve also built a couple of sets of casino specific THC from singles, generally buying one chip at a time or small groups - Grand Casino Gulfport and Foxwoods.

Did you get the coolest (in your eyes) chip of that denomination and therefore have different molds in your set.

This question makes me wonder what you mean when you say “different molds.” Because most collectors don’t mix molds at all, within the same set. There are no real rules in building sets, but there are plenty of unofficial rules and not mixing molds is one of the big ones. Though even that one gets ignored more and more these days.
Which brings me to my current set. As chip prices have risen dramatically, I’ve become less interested in owning my favorite chips - mint leaded THCs - because they’re just too expensive for me to justify. So I’ve moved to a mixed set made up of leaded chips from Vegas casinos on house molds. It’s not a set I envisioned at just about any point in my chipping journey, but it’s the one I love now. Tastes evolve.

Well I’m not that old in this but back when I was new you simply bought whatever set was available that you could afford. There wasn’t endless horseshoe or Jack chips, no NAgB chips, no windwalker, and about two chiproom sales a year. There were three vendors in the vendor section.

So a lot of older members had to work hard to get their sets. There wasn’t hundreds that no one was interested in - there really was only about 5-6 large sets from different casinos that got moved around in different combinations for years.

So it’s always different. 6-7 years ago I would be buying almost everything. Now I poopoo about 95% of what’s for sale. Never imagined it would be like this.
