Cash Game Recruiting higher stakes players (1 Viewer)

I don’t think I have a PP business account but I do have my bank account and a CC linked to it. I never keep money in the account but any time I have sent money to someone on here they have received it within minutes.

I am not sure, but there could be limits to the size of transactions and could become an issue after a while, especially if your game becomes bigger. But a combination of Apple Cash, Venmo, PayPal, and Zella could solve the problem.

I think a cashless game is a good idea, but creating a record of transactions via paypal is not a good solution. You could get hooked on something else and someone could start snooping on all your cash-ins and outs. Or the volume of transactions might tip them off that you are up to something.

Why not meet in advance of the game, sell a player two $500 chips (or whatever denom) and tell them to use them for buyins and rebuys. They can cashout same time next week, or buyin for more (if they were a loser) or just hang on to their chips for next time (color them up at the end of the night, obviously). Might be a hassle having all these meetings, but it'll give you a chance to meet and vet your players a little bit and it'll keep your game cashless on site (less chance of being robbed).

I am not sure if it will ultimately cancel the transaction due to NSF, or just put the person's account into a very negative balance.

You usually need a backup funding source, like a bank account or a credit card.

Based on my experience, these are exactly the types of customer unfriendly features that will make games less desirable to play.

We have a big sheet for each game. Every single game gets settled at the end of the night. Everyone pays and gets paid. No debt, no debt collection, no headache for people managing the game.

Just curious what you would think of this hypothetical scenario:
You sell player(s) a couple of $100 chips ea for a cash , or Tournament, buy-in.. Game taking place in a few days ..
"Finster ", a trusted regular, possibly friend, shows up & says he lost the two $100 chips ... ( dropped them in the bay, or just lost them ...) ......

I don’t have a business PP account. Mine is linked to an eCheckkng account for poker only. I just sent a very large payment to CPC. The money was in my account for 3 days after I sent the PP. I assume once I sent it, CPC was notified that they received a payment.

I’ve, on many occasions, sent someone here. PP transaction with no money in that account. The next day, I hit the ATM to deposit cash to cover, and never had a problem (except the one time I mentioned where I made 2 payments, but only made the deposit for one).

I’m a cash only person, so I’ve learned where some of these “flexibilities” are.

Why not meet in advance of the game.

Yeah this is a great way to deter new players. People, especially people with money, don't have time for this shit.

I would aim for a cashless game and let people deposit via various means. They can even do this a few days in advance. There will always be that guy that just shows up with cash - which is fine. The point is to reduce the overall amount of money in the place. Occasionally having 1k around is not that big of a deal. Consistently having 4-6k in cash in your house could become a problem.

But for anyone wanting to play $2/5 Hold’em it is filled with casino regs just waiting for a fish or two to show up. It’s a tough game.

We have a few of these type within our large network of players, but I think I need a few “fish” to get them to show up on a regular basis.

So you complain that the casino game is full of regs waiting on a fish or two, but it sounds like you just want to transfer that to your home game so you can rake it and make a profit instead of the casino.

The biggest factor in winning at Poker is game selection. Playing the local casino $2/5 is not smart game selection.

I’m not looking to run a poker room. I’m trying to create a game that will draw some of the fish errr higher stakes players that also don’t want to play at the casino with all the hooodie wearing, backback carrying, ear bud listening regs that fill the $2/5 game currently. It isn’t a fun game.

People will criticize and see it as exploitative, but in reality will sell a kidney to find and okaybin such a game. And when the ‘nirmal’ and ‘regular/average’ poker player gets shut out of these games, they will complain even more.

Keep the group small. Keep the invite list small. Do not ‘advertise’ the game outside a small group of people.

I’m having a trial run game tomorrow night. The normal Thursday game is canceled this week for Thanksgiving so I offered to host on Friday for any that are interested.

Looks like 4 of the regulars from that game are coming. I then sent out a text invite to some the players I know that can afford a higher stakes game letting them know about the new players as well to help entice them to play.

It seems to have worked, looks like I have a solid 8 players for tomorrow night.

The game will be self dealt, I ordered a deli tray and told the players a donation for food would be appreciated.

I’ll post some pics and post a game recap Saturday.

Hopefully the guys from the Thursday game like how my game is ran and will look to make some changes to that game. Not likely, but hoping!

Good luck. It’s a process and takes time. Some of the regulars who used to play smaller will find the bigger game with net players exciting at times, but will eventually stop playing due to the uncomfortable stakes. But then you will gain other players. There is no shortage of recreational players who would want to play those stakes, or even higher stakes. It just takes a different way of searching and finding them.

Good luck and crush the game!

We are playing PLO/Hold’em mixed so the game will be 8 max. 10 handed PLO is horrible.

Optimistic that there will be enough to for the second table to be used, but even if its not I want to show it off.

Why is that? I'm genuinely curious. I rarely play PLO; generally when I play Omaha, it's a split-pot variety or an otherwise circusy version.

The game plays best short handed, 4-6 players ideally IMO. At a full table you have to play to the nuts only as it will usually be out there.

But short handed lesser hands are playable and win. Smaller flushes, trips or underfulls, even two pair hands can win that almost never would at a 10 handed game.

Also it takes a long time to deal a full table and each hand takes a long time to play out so you are sitting around not playing a lot more.

6-8 players is preferred.

This action sounds sick. I love that you are mixing in some PLO to add that element of Gamboool. Keeping it 8 handed is a good idea...

I would love to just hang out and rail this game probably so juicy.

Good luck with your new game. (and be sure to run good)

PLO is a must!!! It drives the action, gets more rebuys on the table. The Hold’em is useful for players to catch their breathe and let the brains rest before the PLO starts up again.

At last weeks game during the first orbit of PLO the first 3 hands had all-ins and calls creating pots over $1k each, thankfully I won 2 of those pots! :D

Thats awesome man. Yeah the PLO action is honestly what can set your game apart. Now you are really creating value for your "customers". Where else can you play a mixed game NL/PLO at 2/5 in Cleveland? My guess would be not very many places.

Yeah the PLO will create so much action and fun. This also gives the fish a chance to win more as the edge in Hold 'em is more significant for the good players.

The game went great!!! We were 7 handed most of the night. Started out the first hour 5 handed and we played just PLO. Once we got to 7 we went to round by round. Also some players would “forget” we were in Hold’em and deal PLO, most of the players didn’t care when it happened. By 1am we went back to just PLO as the people that were stuck said it was there only chance to make money.

Everyone loved my Poker room, table, chairs, and chips. One player had even played on the President Casino River Boat.

The food was a big hit too. I ordered a nice deli tray with all the good stuff, some sides, and snacks. I also served jumbo shrimp cocktail which really impressed them.

In the Thursday game everyone gives the host $20 to cover food/drinks so they all did the same last night without any prompting, which was really nice as it pretty much covered all my food/drink costs. Craft beer adds up fast at $12 per 6 pack for Christmas Ales.

The action was awesome. I think several of them realized that playing at a shorter table created more action than a full table. I actually had to put $100 chips in play because I ran out of $5’s & $25’s.

A few pics I managed to get in between my runs to get more rebuy chips for everyone.

That's a lot of chips in play! Awesome job. well done. Building a good pool of players is key to the longevity of your game. Be selective and take your time.

You may go from trying to start your game to wait listing people....!!! That's awesome man glad to hear it went well.

Because you have been into poker so long you may not realize the value in what your are offering. Playing in a trustworthy game with a good host, good food, good drinks, good table, good chips.....that is a rare find indeed.

Think about it from the players point of view...where else can you get that?! Great Job and keep us updated. The stacks of PCA 25s and 5s has me all excited.

So I will be hosting the $2/5 game I have been playing in next week as the usual host is going to Hawaii.

The game is normally just 1 table, 10 handed Hold’em & PLO in rotation. I told the guy that sends out the invites I’d rather play two tables of 6 or 7 if he he can get enough players and I have a few that will play as well.

Last game I used my PCA set so this game I’d like to use my custom set. I have a couple of concerns though about using it.

1. I only have 220 $1’s which is enough for 14 players as the ones are really only used for the blinds anyways. But if we happen to get any more they could run short.

2. The set uses a $20 chip, not a $25 chip and I don’t know how well these guys will receive it. Also rebuys are $500 and players are used to getting a stack of $25 chips.

My solution to that would be to give a stack of $20’s and a $100 chip for rebuys.

So which set should I use? Play it safe with the PCA’s that several of them used already and liked with standard colors they already know or break out the custom set and hope they don’t have any issues.

Definitely the PCA set. Using $20 chips in a $2/$5 game is awkward, especially for people who normally play $2/$5 or higher

I was thinking that. It also gives me a good reason to add a $25 chip to the custom set. :D

Us the $20 chip as the top chip in the 25/50c to $1/2 games and have the $25 & $100 chips for the $2/5 game.

Hate to say it, but in a game like this don't introduce a $20 chip. $25/$100 only.

Agreed. Using a 20 will be awkward for people not used it. 4x 25=100 is a really easy thing to understand whereas I think 5x 20=100 is a less natural calc. for most peoples minds.

PCAs if only to give those sexy sexy 25s some more table time! ;)
