I mostly play online CG and the money is displayed in BB-s.
This gave me an idea: why not do this in a live game?

You can use the same set for any stakes you play, no need to buy specific denoms for that stake. Even for "unconventional" stakes (0.07/0.14) if you want, it doesn't matter.

Disadvantage is that you cannot raise the blinds mid game -> and this is obviously only suitable for cashgames, not Tourneys.
Also there is an extra mental step to convert BB to € - but online players usually already count in BBs.

Has anyone tried something like this before?

This is a very interesting idea, it creates flexibility in stakes without adding more chips. So Im not sure I love it or hate it. I think in BB most of the time in live poker as well.

My monkeys’ heads would explode.

I STILL have people hold up the chip that says “.25” and ask “what’s this worth?”

“Whatever you’re willing to pay me for it” is usually my response.

:D
My honest answer would be: "Don't worry about the dollar value. It's [whatever] big blinds. That's what matters"

But again, this set would be targeted at online degens.

From a game security standpoint this could cause issues if you run games at different stakes. But if you follow your bank closely and trust your players that may not be a problem.

Personally I don’t like the idea, but I’m more of a traditionalist and also haven’t played online in like 15 years. “Back in my day the online sites still showed the amount you were betting instead of the blinds.” (Except if you used a HUD).

Also, moar chips, etc.

I really like the concept, but I don't think it has a huge market: newer games would probably want their chips denominated in value, and older games probably already have a usual stake. It could be good, though, so go ahead and try it if your players fit the bill.

Many players prefer when the actualy value of the chip is printed on it. How ever most games would be very flexible with a breakdown of

100 x non denominated
200 x 1
200 x 5
200 x 25

without a currency symbol.

This could cover 1c/2c up to 1$/2$.

The 25 chip could be either used as 25 cent or 25$ chip. I would prefer to use the non denominated chips always as the chips with the lowest value.

200 Chips are in general sufficient for full ring.

in EU the $ sign doesn't mean much, better use it for BB. But be careful if you play different BB values with same players :)

Furthermore, here in Hungary even the euro/cent/pound/... symbols are useless, since we have Forint (HUF or Ft).
We are forced to use tournament chips for cashgames, unless you make a custom set.
"Luckily" forint is so weak, that the lowest stakes start at 25 HUF / 50 HUF, so the tourney denominations are perfect.
Or the BB denominations ;)
