Quick question...I'm going to use a rebuy chip for my tournament tomorrow. $10 buyin with T10K starting stacks. $10 and turn in your rebuy chip if you bust out, or use it to refresh your stack at the break.

I also want to make an add-on available for those that don't use their rebuy chips. Would it be more typical to charge for this addon? Say...$5 optional addon instead of using the rebuy option for 5K chips? Or would be be more typical to allow the rebuy chip to be turned in for 5K free chips, if it's not used during the rebuy period.

Also, is 5k too much?

I typically provide a free 20% add-on for unused bounty chips (T2000 in your case). I think 50% is too much, and prefer that the chip have inherent value (hence no charge).

My general rule of thumb is that if you are charging for chips, then purchasing them should be available to everybody.

Not sure what you mean by "refresh stack at break".

The refresh is usually something I offer, people who haven't rebuyed can choose to surrender their stacks and pay for a rebuy. Helps prevent the need to shove with a short stack as the rebuy period is ending.

Since you’re charging for rebuy, it makes sense to charge for add-on. Half cost for half chips is fair.

Regarding add-ons, I have usually settled on pricing them as a "can't refuse" prize pool pot-sweetner...
So, for example, in a $100, 100bb tourn, a 20 - 30bb add-on at the break is, say, $10. ( The chips aren't "worth" at that level what they were at start anyway) ...
& The last few games I hosted I have now just changed the add-on to being "Mandatory", meaning I just make the tournament entry $10 additional, & everyone still in at the break is given the bonus add-on chips.
That way there's no dealing with collecting additional money at the break, & my group essentially all takes the add on & be still in at the break anyway.
.. Rebuy (bust or surrender) is avail before the break, it's a home game, & the structure used usually ends up with zero , but sometimes 1 or 2 rebuys before break ... Everyone qualifies for the add-on regardless of if they needed to take a rebuy..

I guess it all depends on what you’re interested in. I’ve only run a few tournaments myself, but I’ve participated in plenty, and I prefer competitive balance over pot sweeteners. And by competitive balance, I guess I mean rewarding people who manage their stacks.
I have no problem with selling re-entries at the same rate as the initial buy. And I think giving a small add-on as a reward for not pissing away your chips and buying a re-entry makes sense strategically. But selling everybody discounted chips just to increase the prize pool only serves to water down the competition, in my opinion.
But then again, THAT might be right for some home games, if that’s what it takes to keep the fish interested.

Pretty much the bottom line, I think. :sneaky: If everybody opts for the add-ons, it doesn't change much strategically -- the big stacks get bigger, and the small stacks get slightly more playable -- but the lower-skilled players do get to stick around longer (good for the game).

Yes, I was referring to a single table social home game,
I much prefer myself, if I'm going to a multi table game and/or casino, No rebuys or add ons.
In the context of the home game both the rebuys and add ons are ( unfortunately) there just to make sure no one has to drive an hour or more & go home after playing just 90 mins ... We used to do the "rebuy or add on but not both", but, this as @BGinGA mentioned, didn't always help the occasional Tautog who was shortstacked or busted at/near break after already needing the rebuy.. & was thengoing to need to make that drive home ... The tournament of course "starts for real" after the break in rebuy/add on games, however the better players are still usually in better shape ..
