Hello everyone,
I've been reading these forums and watching reviews to decide what I should get as my first poker chip set, and I decided to make an account here to get some opinions from people who have been doing this for a long time. I've narrowed my selection down to the Monte Carlo chips, because they are very cheap and I really like the design. I think most people get them from Apache Poker Chips, but I almost prefer the aesthetic of the ones from Discount Poker Shop. Has anyone ever gotten the Monte Carlos from DPS? If so, how was the quality?

I think the chips from DPS are great: I own their Monaco Casino and Outlaw chips. I have no experience with DPS's version of the Monte Carlo, but based on my experience with their other chips, I'm sure their quality is fine.

I looked at DPS's Monte Carlo and others, and I actually prefer the ones from the other site. I think their design is a bit too plain, without any text:

I happen to like the text on the Apache ones--also available on other sites like ThePokerStore.com, where I took the following screenshot from:

Price-wise, DPS used to be cheaper but looks like they recently upped their prices, so they're 18¢/chip just like Apache now.

TPS is more expensive than either DPS or Apache, a roll of 25 is $12.99, or 52¢/chip, and if you buy more, it's cheaper per chip: 100 is $34.99, or 35¢/chip. And TPS has free shipping and many of their items are Buy 3 Get 1 Free, so you can factor those info pricing. (Keep in mind TPS has a "smooth" edge version and a non-smooth version, while Apaches are all smooth. Not all denoms are available in smooth and non-smooth on TPS.)

Well, all opinion I suppose. I find the extra writing cluttering and the grey letters in the background a bit messy. I don't hate the ones from other sites, I could definitely go for them, I just prefer the simpler look. Thanks for giving me more options though!

Yes it’s all personal choice. Get what you like for sure!

Forgot to say I don’t know if DPS’s version is considered smooth or not.

If you wanna go with DPS, sign up for there email list, they occasionally send out promo codes for 5% or 10% off. Maybe something for Black Friday this week...

I’ve used Discount Poker Shop for my 9.5g Roman Times chips when building my cash game set. I was looking for an inexpensive, lighter chip closer to the 10g weight of the (non-slugged) chips used in the Vegas casinos I’ve visited. These are a “NexGen” clay composite type chip and are breakable (though it takes quite a bit of force). I love the weight/feel and “clack” of these chips and, while they are nothing fancy, my home game players love them too due to the easily readable values and straightforward colors that still have a “casino-type” look. And they come in a 25¢ chip denomination perfect for my cash game stakes.

I’ve now got a set of 600 and am happy with both the chips and DPS.

$4.50 for a roll of 25 (18¢/chip), shipping was fast and they came well packed.

I’ve ordered them twice when expanding my set and have had no problems either time so I can’t comment on their customer service as I’ve had no reason to contact them.

Current coupon code = nov5 for 5% off your order…. Codes can typically be found on RetailMeNot.com and 5% is the most I’ve ever seen them offer.

Those features give them more of a casino look. The extra writing is what you’ll find on American casino chips, since most jurisdictions require that chips have a casino name and location printed on them. And the grey background watermark looking letters are sort of an Aria knockoff.

Personally, I agree with the non-cluttered version - these are cheap chips for your home game, so why try to make them look like something they’re not. But that’s just my opinion; get what you like.

As far as quality goes, I don’t know. Like a lot of users on this site, I’ve focused on higher end chips. But use the search feature - I’m sure there’s been plenty written on these chips; you just have to track it down.

Weird, I'm on their mailing list so I don't bother checking RMN, but I didn't get an email about this code for November. They had a vip10 code for 10% off last month for a week (10/4 - 10/11) that I got from their mailing list.

I bought the Monaco Casino set for tourneys. I really liked them, for what they are. They have a nice soft feel, stack well, and aren’t very slippery (except for the pink 5K’s for some reason). Decent colors and easy to read denominations, too. My players commented that they were nice.

If they reduced the weight to 10g, I think they’d be perfect for the price. I assume the Outlaws and Lucky Horseshoes (also from DPS) are made from the same material.

That's true, after looking at the ones from The Poker Store I actually think I do like the aesthetic more, plus I can guarantee that the edges are smoothed. The only gripe I have with the ones from The Poker Store is that their smoothed $5 chips have a much uglier color scheme than their unsmoothed chips and Apache's Monte Carlo's. I guess I'll just have to suck it up though if I don't want a mismatched set.

I considered those chips as well for a little bit, glad you had a good experience with them. I can definitely see myself ordering from discount poker shop in the future so thank you for the discount codes!

I've dealt with Discount Poker Shop and they were fine by me for whatever it's worth.

You should familiarize yourself with @Hobbyphilic 's YouTube channel. He reviews chips of all types at all price points, here's his review of Monte Carlo.

I actually have been looking at Hobbyphilic's channel over the past few days, he's part of the reason that I decided on the Monte Carlos, because he said they were a pretty good chip for the price point, which is really all I need.

Make sure you compare prices w/shipping from Apache for the quantities you want. It might still be cheaper that TPS even w/free shipping.

You can probably mix and match Monte Carlo chips from Apache and TPS, though I'd probably buy all of one denomination from one source and at one time, if you're really picky about matching. Even if you buy from the same vendor later on, the colors may be slightly off from production batch to production batch (though I haven't heard it being a big issue).
