to help memorialize J5 and the amazing work he’s done for the community, let’s use this thread to show his talents and work with everyone. He will surely be missed by this community, as well as all of those for who knew him most.

I had the pleasure of working with him on my SpeakEC set .

1st draft delivered by J5 January 15 2018

Final design was agreed on January 31 2018.

Chips delivered on May 11, 2018.

Several ads-ons later, and the 5 year commemorative inlays later, and it’s done.

I think it would be really cool if people could also post the date/year the set was made and provide a link to it, kind of like Hall of Fame stuff, so we can really click back and see a reference to how appreciated his work was at that time as well.

I have some images somewhere of work he did for me, that I cancelled before finalizing (I just decided not to make the customs at that time.) I sent him money that I think was more than fair, and though we didn’t discuss the terms, I’m pretty sure I was paying him for his time, and not paying for the work to the extent that I’d own it.

So I don’t think those “draft” images are anything I should post, because I don’t think I own them. But on the other hand, if we’re celebrating his work and his life . . .

Thoughts?

John has done a ton of add-ons and revisions for my custom Tragically HIP set. He always responded quickly and worked fast, I like to think it was to help out a fellow Canadian. This started as a tourney set and branched out to a cash set. Always provided great insight and direction.

He also did a ton of other add-ons (extra denoms, stamps, DBs, cut cards, etc.) for my other sets. So sad his life was cut short.

He did a great job designing my league logo which I use everywhere.

My first J5 set, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. John somehow pieced together this set of my random thoughts and ideas. I first made contact with him on September 18, 2015, and he was able to start working on it in early March of 2016 (yes even back then he was that in demand). Crabby McCraberson was born into existence in April, and the inlay and artwork were done by August. They arrived November 1, 2016.

I brought a kernel of an idea for a vintage, 1940s hotstamp set to J5, and he put art to my vision. Without him (and @AK Chip who made the impossible possible with his dedication to hotstamping chips that CPC said were impossible to stamp), my dream set would not have existed.

Here are the ceramic cash set and tournament sets he designed for me (printed by Palm Gaming a long time ago). Cash set turned out much better than the tournament set, but that's more of a printing thing than the design. I'll have to try to find the original drafts that J5 sent me...he did a great job and was hoping to use him in the future. RIP Johnny!

For me first there was Grand Championship of Poker group buy set back in the CT days:

The second project with John was Colony Clubs. We talked by phone before the first mockups and the result was as follows. Outstanding talent.

We selected the up left and went on with that...

And the final result was...

Then became Katy Perry and we did an alternate to $1 chip. Never made though...yet...

And Dealer Buttons were must of course...

This was selected as an acrylic Dealer Button...

Some ceramic higher denom chips were also made as a side dish.

Johnny, I thank you for all of these. And the great discussions we had while making these.

Over my time here and back on CT, I've never been super big on collecting samples of other folks customs. That said, if I'd see a set or design that caught my attention I would try my best to get a sample set if I could.

As I go through this thread and the other one, I'm finding that I'm not terribly surprised most of what I searched out and have in the collection at home were J5 designs.

So I got John to make me my CPC Atlantis set, then a revision for my hot stamps and another for labeling Paulsons. I haven't taken pics of my THC set but it's the same labels as RHC. In between all of that I also got him to make the cloth for my table which he wasn't too comfortable with as he hadn't done that before but I nagged him into submission.

I also included the Noirs as they were my favorite fantasy set, also used the 100 as inspiration of my custom set's 100. Seller's remorse right there.

Edit: I mis-remembered, I ordered the original inlays and hotstamps at the same time, but I added 1k and 5k inlays at a later stage. The first order I got the final artwork on Dec. 15th 2008.

John and I worked on a few designs together. He was awesome to work with and had the patience of a saint, working with me to explore, test, and tweak. There were a couple other unfinished designs, but as I changed direction and never completed them, I won’t post them.

First was the original J. Finney’s design, used for a frac in my mixed inlay (first) set. (I went with the one on the left.)

Our second completed project was my 310 Club hot stamp. While the stamp has to yet appear on a set, it exists and made it on both a test chip (below) and a sample set I was using to iterate. John mocked up a number of variations for me, both in the stamp design and color combos. He was always willing to help and offer his thoughts when asked. In the end, I made a big pivot and returned to the J. Finney’s inlay where I expanded the design to cover a full set.
