So I’ve been getting pms from a new member that joined, started following me, and sent an pm offering me Gardena chips but unable to post pictures. When I pressed them for an email or address to verify them they quickly ended the conversations because I was “too paranoid”.

The user name is @JemmaJuniper and they refuse to post anything publicly. Hopefully no one has been taken yet, some people reported getting this same email.
They are located in CA so we all know to be careful, but this looks like it could be a whole new level.

Perhaps my opinion will be unpopular, but I feel that since this is a community, you really should be a member of the community before you start wheeling and dealing. I don't understand why people think they can just sign up and start trying to sell chips privately without any type of history behind them or credentials.

Thanks for bringing this to light. We can’t be too careful these days given what’s happened not long ago.

However, I’m not quite sure what you’re getting at when you said, “They are located in CA so we all know to be careful???” LOL

I might be wrong, but I don't think he's saying that we should be careful because they are from CA. I read it as two separate statements/points.

1. FYI, they are located in CA
2. And just letting everybody know about this person so we don't have another pippin event.

Yeah, that's how I read it too.

Unrelated note: also don't trust people from CA  :ROFLMAO:

Now I’m interested, what was the pippin situation. There are so many scams no in days it’s hard to trust anyone. I would never buy anything of Craigslist or anything like that because I just figure it’s a scam. It seems pretty cool that people are looking out for everyone here. Is there a running thread with ‘red flag’ members to watch out for? It obvious when some one has 15k messages they should be trusted. i just recently signed up and have been reading this forum on and off for a few years. I like reading the threads more than commenting, I just figure there is someone who knows more about the question being asked than I do.

Long story short; dude took people's money and never sent chips. Like a lotta money.

But I think it’s important to note that he was a regular active member that went off the deep end at some point. He didn’t join with the intention to scam and it doesn’t appear that was his purpose for being being here. My point is that you don’t need to just be wary of shady accounts, but probably should also have some general healthy level of skepticism until people really earn your trust directly.

YUP! He got off to to a rocky start, then was active and fun, and then took people for 20k. Maybe it was all part of his plan; maybe he did just go off the deep end. I think that's the only way he made out with so much; because he had some sort of rep here.

Hopefully karma catches up to people like that. I think this forum is pretty unique because everyone seems happy and glad to be here. I usually only read forum (different ones with different topics) and they all seem really negative, usually when someone would ask a question they are attacked because someone already wanted to know that same question 5 years ago and they didn’t know that. my first question I posted here was 100% answered positively with great knowledge. I probably could of searched past threads for my answer but I wanted to see how the interaction was with the other people on here. And it’s been great, glad to hear that there has been only a Few bad apples and it didn’t ruin the experience. But for 20k I would be on a plane paying a visit to someon.

This is the exact reason to go to meetups. Gives you a chance to actually meet people and size them up before doing business with them.

Agreed. In most forums I tend to lurk and read with few posts created by me. This is one of the few forums I have joined where I've been somewhat active. There are a lot of great people on here but there's also some people I'll avoid. With anything that has value there are always scumbags you need to sniff out and avoid.

Thanks for the heads up, @ekricket

And damn. There’s so many “web sites” selling poker chips using pics taken from old sales here and on eBay. If people spent 1/2 the effort doing good thing as they do bad imagine how nice a world we’d have. Incidentally does anyone want to buy a 2000 chip PCA set? $2000 PPFF only. 22 sets available! Hahaha

Seems to be a lot of scammy attention to the site lately, we’ve popped up on somebodies organized crime radar.

Not totally surprising... with sets hitting 5 and 6 figures some one's bound to notice the laundering potential. It's somewhat common with high-value collectibles; "transactions" make it easy to move large amounts of money with little legal hassle. And scammers will certainly look for their angle as well.

I HATE SCAMMERS!!! We need to run them off of the forum with extreme prejudice! LOL

I like the no PM until a certain number of days and posts but I think 10 posts is too little! 10's too easy! and 30 days sounds like a good number @Tommy

I for one would like to see a look into upgrading the feedback method for the forum and if there was a great solution but cost more, I would be all in favor of some kind of assessment fee to all members to do the upgrade... after all @Tommy is very fair and provides a great place with the great number of users we're up to the per user fee for such a thing should be lower. It would also accomplish a clean up of the user list of fall outs and if by some chance a user has multiple ID's it could solve that also...... JUST SOME THOUGHTS

PCF is great but like everything the bigger something gets the harder it is to manage.

I agree scammers are a problem EVERYWHERE. im brand new to this forum so I’m under the no PM rules and 10 post. So from my perspective is it sounds good but it is really makes bigger problems in my view, I’ll explain. Im not saying I have all the answers to fix it, I’m just new here so the rules are fresh to me right now. Also I’m not saying I’m selling chips but for this argument let’s act like I am.

so I can’t PM members, but everyone else is allowed to PM me. Everyone has been 100 percent nice and I have told everyone ,”I am not saying I’m selling anything, and I can’t for 5 day period”. 9 out of 10 times everyone says, “You can buy and sell privately via messages but to do a group sale you need to wait 5 days.” So this is true but it basically forces me as a seller ‘under the radar”. So now I have multiple private messsges selling to multiple people. They don’t know about each other, only I do. It would be easier for me to take advantage of the situation, and because I can not ask about pricing or anything selling for 5 days it’s a lot easier for them to take advantage of me as well. Instead if I can send PM’s , they wouldn’t be able to send them to me as well. It’s very easy to see how by forcing these conversations private it keeps a secret on what really is going on. so at the end of 5 days either I could of scammed multiple people without them knowing about each other or I could feel like I was taken advantage of because I couldn’t ask to see if the offer is good or not. In this thread other people have said there are members here to watch out for. I’m sure if everthing was up in the open and someone else sees someone being taken advantage of someone would chime in.

#2, I’m in California and we have a waiting period to purchase guns. So if I wanted to shoot someone because I’m mad, I have to wait several days to get that Gun. Hopefully I would of cooled down by than and moved on. But if I was crazy,I could wait than do it. Same with the 5 day rule here. If I wanted to scam someone, all I have to do is wait 5 days. Anyone who wants to scam someone would do that, unless your some crackhead and need money is 20 minutes. Than you would move on To somewhere else to do your scam. The 5 day rule sounds good but again, it’s a drop in the bucket if you are a scam artist.

i would recommend all new sellers have to post classifieds or have all sells public, not private like they are. Maybe do some kind of broker for your first sell. You would send your chips to the forum. They collect the money. abd make sure the buyer gets the chips and the seller get the money. Or the forum holds the money. Once the buyer confirms they got the chips than the money is released. Than your account would get “verified’ and you could be trudted a little more. It’s a pain but there has to be some better way and there needs to be more transparency.

#3 a running list of scammers to blacklist. I’m new here and I heard sbout this scammer who stole 20k in this thread. But even after asking a question about it, i have zero idea who he was, where he‘s from or any details. So who says he doesn’t have another account under a different name and is not PM me about sells. More transparency, as list of users names , maybe the city and persons real name if they listed it on the forum before. Something is better than,’hey watch out there is a scammer on the loose, debt say anymore about it but he’s 20k up right now, good luck. ‘

just a few thought on the matter

@hornhighyo - first off, thank you for the post. It's great to get another view on the topic, especially one that comes from the outside-in.

10 posts doesn't seem like it would be very hard hit though. Especially if you take a little of time to invest into the forum to comment, learn, ask questions. IMO, it's too low; for money/chips to be exchanged, I kinda feel it needs to be 30 days + 100 posts. I mean, unless you're coming from ChipTalk and have been chatting with people for a decade, wouldn't you want to figure things out before buying/selling?

I'm really glad you've had a good PM experience; welcome! But I'm curious, why jump right into the business side of chips? Do you really think it's common for people's first and only interest here to be to sell chips?

Oof, tough one. Then you get into all sorts of issues with people threatening to divulge personal information of members online (addresses, photos, facebook accounts, etc). It's a slippery slope. But I agree, I wish there was a way for people to identify the villains if they create another account. Again, hopefully, members only deal with those who have established reputations here.

Your first point;
You correct 10 post is no big deal. even for a scammer, 100 is a lot more of a commitment. I still think having zero PM to and from new people would help the forum police itself with shady new people. Example there was a post the other day that someone got a PM from a new member about giving the, chips or something. And it got weird. Than someone else chimed in and said they got PM as well. So who know how many PM that person sent and if it was a scam who fell for it. But if the new people can’t PM for 30 days than you can tell if they are offering the same deal to 50 different people.

your second point;
here Would be my answer to that. Not saying I’m selling anything again, just an example. I didn’t jump the business of selling chips, I have some chips I just wanted to sell. So I go online look up chips for sell. See a few eBay listings than I find this forum. Okay I’ll go on the forum and see if I can sell my chips because eBay is all single or 10 chips and I have a set to sell. Again not saying I’m selling anything this is only to make my point. Join the forum and BAM I’m now in the universe of casino chips. I never even knew it existed. But I’m not looking for a new hobby just want to sell. But I can’t unless it’s all private (again where problems can come). Well after 5 days on the probation period I found a really interesting forum with really cool people. I never knew I wanted to collect chips, but now I just might start. I never even knew it was a thing. I heard of baseball cards but not poker chips. So in that case the 5 day wait worked great for me, but that might not be what everyone else wants. So if you are just looking to sell, than maybe just have a spot for that. but I feel if you spend a little time here you’ll find something really interestin. To answer your question “do you really think it’s common for peoples first and only interest here to be to sell chips?” Yes, that what I thought, I didn’t know collecting was a thing, so I only thought you came here to find people to sell to. My experience is probably different than yours, but again I’m glad I found this place.

your third point,” Again, hopefully, members only deal with those who have established reputations here.” That’s good but it brings up the guy who scammed 20k. He wasn’t new, and all new people are not bad. And all the people with high message counts are probably not good. Some feedback system or verification system would be nice. On other forum when I see a guy 3000 or 10000 messages it was always a red flag to me. i would read a lot of forums and it always seemed like the guys with the high numbers just responded to everything to get a high message count. Like that was their goal. Here seems pretty legit. A lot different experience in a good way.
