Possible Scam - New Member trolling for addresses and emails (2 Viewers)

I kinda feel it needs to be 30 days + 100 posts
Trying to make high quality posts for me early on, it took a while to get to 10. I'm generally a fairly private person and prefer to search and read instead of post new (duplicate) threads. I do, however, have probably a hundred private messages with other members. Between the chip room and classifieds, I've bought about 2000 Paulsons through this forum. Should someone with my posting profile not be allowed to partake in the market?

This isn't an unloaded question either- I'm running a group buy right now and didn't realize how fresh a recent scam was until I read this thread. I understand peoples hesitancy a bit more now.

I got an eye on you.....

Left one or right one?

Join the forum and BAM I’m now in the universe of casino chips. I never even knew it existed. But I’m not looking for a new hobby just want to sell.
I don't know, I kind of feel that if you just want to sell chips there are marketplaces like eBay for that. PCF is a different story. It's a community. Yes you're allowed to sell stuff here, but again I think it should only be after you've been a member of the community. So that actually does help... You're still able to sell chips elsewhere, but if you want to sell them here then I think you need to have some type of reputation / history first.

Of course, this hurts people like you who honestly just want to sell their chips. They don't want to scam anyone. In fact it even hurts us because it prevents people from selling their chips to the community. But is it better to protect ourselves or to leave ourselves open but give ourselves more opportunity to encourage transactions from new members?
That’s good but it brings up the guy who scammed 20k. He wasn’t new, and all new people are not bad.
Yes, that's correct. However if you looked at his feedback, there were some negative items. Anything negative is typically a red flag that you should take caution, and maybe just pay the 3% PayPal fee to ensure that your purchases are covered.

I did that a long time ago when I purchased my pinball machine. It was a lot of money and I didn't know the person I was buying from and they were relatively new on the pinball forums. As a result, I just ate the 3% and had the comfort that if something went wrong, I could go through PayPal to get my money back.

Yes, it's a tough situation because there's no one size fits all. There are good, honest people like yourself and then there are those who are not. And if you have a big enough net you're going to catch some good ones too.

There's no easy answer. With those restrictions, you would not be able to run your group buy. But, an argument could be made that a group buy should only be run by somebody who has experience here and has participated in them before.

Yes, people are going to lose out. And good folks like you who step up and do something nice for the community wouldn't be able to. Is that a price that we're willing to pay to try to keep scammers out?

here is a direct quote from a PM,”Generally eBay gets the highest prices but we like to buy/sell/trade on this site bc the chips stay with the hobbyist and community!” I agree with that. My chips are personal to me and I want them to go to somewhere where they are appreciate. eBay isn’t that place. So you feel like there places like eBay made for selling, but there is alot of selling going in here. My point is if you lock your car doors it is no safer from being stolen. And if a scammer needs to wait 5 days and do 10 post you are no safer either. I like it here, just wanted to point a few things out from the perspective of a new member, how some of the safety rules put in place I feel make it worse and not better. Just an opinion.

not really any safer, as I pointed out in earlier post it is more unsafe. For the new person and a person who’s been on here for years. It just drives the sells to be private with no transparency.

The feedback thing is a little weird. It’s not pushed or really mentioned to the new members. On our screens it only talks about 5 day waiting period and how to post 10 good post. There is ready nothing to tell the new member to look at feedback of others, how to find it and what does it mean. I wouldn’t even know about the feedback unless I accidentally didn’t come across it. Maybe when my account is unlocked it will highlight it more.

You should definitely be able to. That is why 100 post 30 day thing is just a false sense of insecurity. Welcome new members, get them out of the shadows and be transparent. Forcing new members to PM‘s seems like SOMETIMES people are trying to hide or be sneaky. If there is nothing to be ashamed about than let it be posted and policed by the community.

The wait/post requirement does not prevent scamming. But it does give the person engaging in that transaction some data points to review before deciding to deal with a new or unknown member.

A "No PMs for 10 days" rule for new members (or 30 days, whatever) should lock that member's account out from PMs altogether, both outgoing and incoming. That forces any communication with/from new accounts to be via public forum posts.

Can we also hide the Classifieds from new users?

If they can see it when they are not logged in, it doesn't make much sense to block them from it when logged in...

Carry on.

Kind of hard to prevent email connections, though. Especially with people (like me) who show email addresses in their sigs, or elsewhere, even in images.
