Please recommend a set for my 13yo nephew (1 Viewer)

Faux clay. I have a ton of white and some black. You would have to dye some of the white. (RIT dye.) Easy to do over the stove.
They feel awesome (No Kidding.) And they are cheap.

Downside: you need labels and milling if you want denoms.

If we were on the same continent, I 'd send you my custom-labelled and denominated dice chip set for free.
In that case, my godchildren would inherit just clay. :)
Two continents and one ocean in the middle make this uneconomical.

Consider these: https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Poker-Chips-Ultra-Heavy-13-6g/dp/B08M5JN2Z3/

This looks to be the same set that's available at Costco, and which was discussed extensively here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/“ultimate”-poker-chip-set-at-costco.64592/

The verdict on the chips: "Chips are denominated and seemed to stack fine. Less slippery than matsuis I have felt." I think they look nice. The 400 chip breakdown should work fine for whatever the kids end up playing. They're heavy; heavier than dice chips, same weight as Claysmiths and Outlaws/Spartans. The case is similar to Versas and has a sturdy latch, which a lot of other cases lack.

For a lighter weight, but a little more expensive, consider these: https://www.amazon.com/VINCI-Unicorn-Authentic-Weighted-Plastic/dp/B07YBW4T94/ . I don't think they look as nice, and the case isn't as good, but the lower weight is a nice feature.

Outlaws are a great choice. I like the way they feel, and probably the kids will think they look cool.

I have a big pile of faux clays put away, and prolly would be great to give them to a young-un to get him hooked on gambling...er I mean math :) edit: To be clear, I would give them to you if you promise to make a gift of them to your nephew.

I don't know what you're thinking, but I can do 300-400 easy.

If you'd like to get really fancy, spend the $100 on labels with gear for him...I understand they work well with FCs. Or maybe you know someone who can murder faux clays. :) I'd do some superhero labels if I were you...Marvel characters usually fit the bill with a 13 year old??

If youre interested, just PM me and we can figure something out. Pretty sure grey, red, green...and we'd have to dig through the pile to see what else.

The Poker knights and similar chips that apache sells for around 18 cents each are a perfectly fine starter set

I'm surprised no one has mentioned what was my first set of chips, and probably some of you guys too. Super Diamonds! Here's a place that sells them for 6 cents a pop! A few colors are out of stock, including white and red, but if you're doing a tournament set, they have green, black, purple, yellow, orange and a few others in stock. And aluminum cases for $17. That's 500 chips and a case for under $50. Leaves room to splurge on good cards and a nice DB!

I had a few thousand super diamonds. Then I gave them away.

No ragrets.

I'd get him a bunch of sample sets. Various china clays, ceramics, metal slugged, etc. This will allow him to get the feel for the different kinds of chips. If he likes the ceramics, get him ceramics for Christmas. It will allow him to get some use out of the chips he just got but will probably be more appreciative of a better set for Christmas. I guess it would kind of be like him unknowingly picking out his own Christmas present. Plus, if your budget is $100, you could even get him a couple of Paulson shuffle stacks to go along with the samples.

For $100 I really enjoyed my Milano set when I was begining. Very casino looking which is what I enjoyed as a kid since I couldn't legally gamble yet - if they're anything like I was the more realistic looking the cooler. I would also recommend some plastic cards as a bonus gift

His dad (my sister's ex) ended up getting him a set. I have not seen it yet, but I assume that it is dice chips. I may just have to get him something after all. A good uncle doesn't let his nephew use dice chips.
nothing wrong with starting out on dice chips, but if he said he really wanted poker chips for his birthday i can imagine he wanted some cool ones, at least with denominations. if you do get him some where it is less practical i would say higher denominations would be more appealing to young people. i imagine he's not going to be playing for money anyway. or if he is, maybe get some 1s, 5s, 25s and if they say $ he can use the $ value as cents, play a little $2 100bb game with his weekly allowance or whatever

I would go for Outlaws but edge quality may vary by vender. An alternative would be to look for used Tiki Kings. I recently saw a set of 600 for $300.
