I asked my nephew what he wanted for his 13th birthday. He completely surprised me and said, "poker chips." I don't think he even knows that I have an obsession with these little discs, or that I even play poker at all.

So, can anyone recommend a good cheap set? Maybe a Versa case with room for cards and buttons? I am so out of the loop on the beginner end of chips now.

I should probably look around at Apache and ABC huh?

Dice Chips ($0.05/chip)?
Claysmith sluggers ($0.15/chip)?
China clays ($0.30/chip)?
Sunfly polyinno ($0.60/chip)?

Custom ceramics would be a cool and pretty personal present. If you want to keep it more budget you could do Outlaws, I'm sure a 13-year-old kid would like skulls and guns, and those are pretty nice for sluggos.

I'm thinking a budget of around $100 total. Who knows if he will even want them in a month or two.

Claysmiths or Outlaws are probably the way to go. I'll likely play a bit with him, going over rules and a bit of strategy. I don't mind cheap chips, but I hate slippery chips.

I offered to run a little tournament for his bros. We shall see what happens.

Scotty, I absolutely recommend the Casino Royale chips that Apache sells. I think $.16 each and great for a first set, good colors and lots of ebde spot bedazelment for the youngeters. Also I am guessing you are thinking a tourney set rather than cash for kids. You could do a high stakes set and get him a few of the .5 mil plaques and a couple 1 mil plaques. You know the kids would think that is the coolest thing ever...

BTW Iam just another Big Kid!! Lol

Likely a tourney set, or play cash at 1/100th of face value on the cheaper sets ($1 = 1¢).

These look cool on Amazon. The same as Outlaws, I think.

I have the Monaco set from Discount Poker Shop for tourneys. I assume they’re also the same material as the Outlaws and the Spartan set above. I’m really happy with them. Aside from being heavy, they feel great, and aren’t too slippery. For some reason though, the 5000s how much more slippery than the rest. YMMV, but I highly recommend them for a set on a budget.

You 're un Uncle goddammit! :)
Get indestructible dice chips, and send them to @Josh Kifer  :ROFLMAO: for milling or hotstamping or whatever method of denomination.
4 denoms, 1-5-20-100.
As the kid grows, the denoms will be representing cents, and then dimes, and then dollars.
If he decides he doesn't like poker anymore, you 'll just have wasted a few dollars to your beloved friend @Josh Kifer, while having done your best for your nephew.
What's not to like????

I guess we all differ, personally when learning the game I would want to gear kids towards controlled loss.

Interested to bring @Statesvegas in and ask his opinion as far as kiddos playing cash?

Personally I grew up playing cash but not for money, just for fun. When I did start playing for money it was tournament poker. Maybe just me but I really think they would get a kick out of a high stakes little set!

Something like T1mil SS for 8 players

(10) T5k = 50k x 8 = 80
(10) T25k = 250k x 8 = 80
(7) T100k = 700k x 8 = 56

Add (20) T25k for the first chip up (100)
Add (20) T100k for the second chip up (80) and (4) 500k plaques (1) 1 mil plaques (mostly for fun, you would need 2 - 500k)

So 260 chips @ $.18 is $48 plus 5 plaques $47... $95 plus shipping and don't forget the dealer button for $6 so $101 plus shipping and you are going to be the best uncle ever!! Makeit fun and inviting for the kiddos and hopefully they will stick with it!! I really think the high roller set would be a big hit!!But what the hell do I know...

BTW I almost stayed in budget minus the case! First step on the road to recovery!! Lol

My goddaughter wanted her own set when she was 12 years old to play with her friends.
I composed her a small tourney set for 6 players (200 chips are fine).
I ordered Dunes Commemorative (nexgen like plastic chips) for her.

An example of 6 players breakdown you can use :
60 x 100
40 x 500
75 x 1000
25 x 5000

Especially the ones with the naked woman on the plaque... all the boys will want to come over for poker night!!

You don't have to get the plaque. Its a "Centaur Women". sheeesh

Seriously, if you wanted to get a Parks and rec set I would approve of the purchase from ABC

I second this recommendation, but skip the plaques.

@Saoliver

Hey bud, PM me your nephews address. I'm going to send him a sample set. If I have an extra DB of something I'll send it as well.

If I still have a set of NJs you could have them as well. Honestly can't remember if they are still in the closet.

edit: it's a SMALL set if I still have it. Cash set. Around 300 chips.

I used to have a TON of them but I made some small sets and gave them away as poker night prizes to buddies who were dice chipping.

I don't know if 13 year olds understand or care about slugged chips or ceramics or clay. I would go cheap on the chips (like claysmiths) and get him good cards (Fournier or something from our friend @desjgn ). I think kids will notice cards more than chips.
