Paulson: Full label replacement tutorial thread (4 Viewers)

Oh, they all smell. Very chemical. It goes away. I always do a chain before relabelling - remove inlay, wash chip, then oil, dry (paying extra attention to the inlay area).

Thanks. I just wanted to ensure the smell goes away. I’m sensitive to smell and don’t want all my hard work relabels to smell awful....

Slightly different question: Anyone have tips for *removing* Gear labels (overlabels, not milled/inlay replacements)?

I’ve bought a couple of racks from a PCFer which have Gear labels over the casino inlay. I’m in the process of ordering new Gear labels to re-customize them for my set.

The seller said that he had them stored in a cold place, and that the label on one chip he tested seemed to come off readily and cleanly, possibly because of the cold. So that’s one idea — freeze ’em first. But might that harm the chip somehow?

Otherwise, I guess I’ll just see what works as far as peeling back edges. I don’t want to damage the chip by cutting, in case I ever want to resell these.

Hi all, this is my very first post on PCF! I own a casino party company in Iowa and have had to do this with some different tournament chips that we converted to Roulette chips. I found that laying them on a table (surface) and heating each side with a hair dryer for 10 - 20 seconds really helped loosen up the inlay to the point where it basically popped out once the razor blade put force on the edge. I was able to do 1,600 sides myself in 3 nights while watching TV....had to take some breaks to shake out my hand muscles, but a very effective method. Hope this helps someone!

I would also do this for someone for the right price ;)

Welcome to the site!

Any before after pics of the chips? I am always leery of applying heat to chips as I am worried about damage/warping but may give it a shot on some throw away chips.

Thanks
Grant

Thanks Grant! Here is the only photo I have - granted these are not Paulsons or anything remotely expensive, though I would imagine any chip inlay/sticker with adhesive would react in a similar manner. (I got the heat tip from my equipment supplier in Vegas)

Paulsons are a completely different ballgame. The inlay is pressed into the clay, the tough part is the layer under the plastic. Totally different than a sticker or label.

Yep totally get it....heat may help, but I don't have enough experience to say for sure.

Be very cautious of heat with a Paulson. If the heat helps get the inlay out, then you've softened the clay, not something you really want to do. One of my first attempts was using heat.... not a great outcome. The chip you've taken a picture of is plastic, and those are normally 100x easier to remove labels from.

All input and ideas are definitely welcome here. I look forward to your results if you try out some Paulson chips!

dont use heat with paulsons lol. badddd idea. Exacto knife/ plyers / Non Acetone nail polish remover and a dental pick and your good to go

I would not use direct heat from anything against a compression clay chip. Too high of a chance of causing warping. Even abnormally high ambient temperatures can do it.

My turn today. The original AS quarters aren’t bad but to me they aren’t as amazing as the snappers so here we go!

Today is going to be a long day.
Are you using nail polish remover? My experience with the boat chips is that the paper’ish label part comes up pretty easy after 30 seconds with a drop or two of NPR.

I haven’t gotten to that part yet. Wanted to dedicate today to removing as many of the laminate covers as I can. Might take a break to get some of the non-acetone remover.

Of course it's not easy. If it were easy, why would there be a market to pay someone else to do it?

Always cut/scrape AWAY from you. And don't have a stroke doing it.
Agreed. When I talked to Chris to order the labels I had the option of sending him the chips to get done but I wanted to try it myself to experience it. I had watched the videos so knew it wouldn't be a fast job, but going through it first hand makes me appreciate the work a lot more.

I actually found that for me, cutting towards myself had better results and less risk of damaging the outer rings of the chip. I would start on the edge of the label and cut into the center. Then go back again and cut to pry up the label. When I stuck myself in the thumb it was one of the times where I had a harder time getting the label to peel up enough to grab it with the pliers.

Funny thing is having the band-aid on saved me from further cuts as it protected that thumb from a couple more minor stabs  :ROFLMAO:

I finished the peeling laminate part of the label about an hour ago so just under 4 hours of work for me. Took a break to have dinner with the kids and to get the nail polish remover and now it's time to remove the last parts of the stickers, wash them and let them dry overnight before putting the final stickers on.

Hmmm... removing the laminate should be very quick. What tools are you using?

All you need to do is make one shallow cut and then pull off the plastic with small pliers. Takes me about 15 seconds a chip.

A box cutter and small needle nose pliers. I’m just slow and was watching tv while doing the work. I did one cut first to go below the laminate and the second cut to pry it up so I would have enough to grab on to.

You aren't supposed to attack the chip lol.
You might want to try the pie cut technique, you should end up cutting into the outer mold far less

Damn, they look good. I've still got 4 racks to murder...2 racks of snappers to 25¢ and two racks of $2 to 5¢ (true scrub donkey degen micro set here).
Those $2 chips would make a great nickel! Good luck on your journey! Be sure to test the NPR you use on the chips too and don't go to liberally on it. First few chips I put too much and it seems the hot pink edge spots are sensitive to it. I got the non-acetone type too, but a generic store brand so not sure if they are all created equally.
