Not sure if this has been done before and I did a search.

Wondering how y'all feel about this as I am a bit surprised myself.

My wife and I play heads up for fun, and she basically cannot stand plastic cards. I have used Modiano, Dal Negro, and I just got some Fournier 2800 (which I love). I like all 3 of those, but my wife prefers the Key West cards that Dennis sent me when I bought my chips. I also have some Copags and some KEM, but I don't care for them that much.

Is this common? Is this a Ford/Chevy thing. Do lots of people still prefer the coated paper cards? I do like the Key West cards, I just like the plastic ones more.

Thanks.

When its about design etc, coated paper cards are brilliant, I have seen some amazing designs that plastic cards don't come close to touching. but...... and its a big but..I think it really comes down to functionality. Like @links_slayer already said, paper cards need replacing a lot over the course of the night. Whereas plastic cards usually last multiple games (weeks, months etc).

Occasional poker players - paper probably works (even though I'm still recommending plastic), but makes more financial sense to use plastic cards in the long term.

Ultimately it comes down to preference. I think a majority of people on this forum would recommend plastic cards (unless im wrong obviously)

Personally, I love plastic cards, Fourniers, Copags are probs my go to cards. Copags are used when I know people wont treat my cards well and fourniers for the other occasions.

Plastic 100000%. Paper cards don't stand up to the abuse like plastic cards do. Pluse since they get so worn you can easily know what cards your opponents are holding.

Suspicions confirmed. I tried to tell her all of y'alls points...but no dice...."They're too slippery" Uhhhggggg....LOL

I love my plastic cards. I believe its been 3 years now using the same deck for monthly games. We broke out a second deck of the same cards a month or so back and they are more slippery then the old ones but given a little time they will get broken in like the originals I'm sure.

Have you tried the Bicycle Prestige cards, which have a sort of paper texture?

If paper cards somehow make it into my house, in a chip shipment or something similar, they're immediately thrown in the garbage.

p.s.: They're *supposed* to be slippery.

I love the plastic cards for the feel and longevity of them. A couple decks a year maybe. I do get a lot of the they are to slippery a lot from the other players in my game but, I just keep telling them to use them...

Really? Plastic...

I guess I never did answer the question. For poker I prefer the plastic cards, hands down. Copag is my go to. For casino parties where I've got an 8 deck blackjack shoe going I use Key West cards.

The deck that's lasted 3+ years so far plus the new one are both Bicycle Prestige. For the money and how long they've lasted I am a happy camper.

No, not trolling...legitimate question. It would seem that maybe regular poker players prefer Plastic, but the occasional player doesn't like them.

Maybe it's like how some people like Dice chips over nice Paulsons. I've read that here several times.

I've played in a game the other night were someone brought paper cards (he thought he was doing something nice).
I dealt all night and the players shuffled, most complained after 2 hours about shuffling and the guy said (who brought the card) "well lets trade it out for another one I brought) I nicely said "its not that its and old or used or stiff deck, its that they are used too the plastic cards......He then looked bewildered and said "BUT THESE ARE BRAND NEW"

In my opinion the people who dont like the plastic cards, dont shuffle an entire night or half the night, and they think the plastic cards feel cheep..

This is just my 2 cents..

Well that, and the first time you shuffle a plastic deck, especially a new one, the cards end up all over the floor. But it's a pretty shallow learning curve.

Paper cards in a real poker game... How about an analogy...

If you have fine furniture, you can have a quiet cocktail party with a few elegant guests and not worry about drinks making ring-stains on the furniture. This is like a pleasant game of bridge with gentlemen and ladies with paper cards.

But if you invite the frat over for a beer blast, you're going to be running around like a maniac trying to slip coasters under every can all night and still find out your furniture is covered with rings before half the night is through. That's like having a real poker game with paper cards; they'll be marked, warped, and have dog-eared corners before the night is through, never mind the ones with grease and the ones that got wet.

Instead, you should just have indestructible furniture, and have the kegger, and you can enjoy. That's a poker game with plastic cards.

Your Missus just likes what she has been used to. Nothing wrong with that. A buddy of mine was the same way, insisting he liked paper because of the feel and thickness. So I played a night with Bicycle Prestige cards without telling him anything more than that they were a new design for his traditional "bikes". after the evening I asked how he liked the "new" cards and, when he said they were great, I gifted him his first set of 100% plastic cards and told him to junk his paper garbage. Try something similar with your wife when the Key West cards begin to become unplayable.

Plastic cards FTW.

Heads up against your wife, use paper cards.
Although MIlo supplied the diplomatically correct answer above, I have to disagree with this one. If using plastic cards will tilt the wife and possibly provide a mental advantage, then by all means you should do so. In my house, we take no prisoners. :)

Mrs Zombie and I always travel with a deck of cards. It doesn't always get used because of space limitations (though that's about to change with our airplane table topper). It's been with us forever, and it's paper. The last trip I pulled it out, and neither one of us could stand it. Years of plastic cards has that kind of effect. Luckily, that was the trip to the Derby City Showdown, where decks of Nevada Jacks were in the goodie bag.

Even cheap plastic is better than paper.

The paper cards didn't return from Louisville.

Folks first reactions to plastic cards are always amusing.
"Whoa, they're so greasy!"
"Are these things legal?"
and my favorite
"Why do these cards smell a bit like....plastic shopping bags?"

LOL...funny you should say that...I need all the help I can get. My wife is actually pretty good at poker.

I suspect you haven't played with Royals. If the choice is paper or Royals, I might choose paper...

I'm also opposed to plastic cards that are "sticky" (very dirty cards) or are warped (USPC KEM's). I have not played with Royals, but do not doubt that somewhere there are plastic cards that are worse than paper - but that would have to be a mighty shitty card.

Paper cards move less, so poor shufflers get more wiggle room with poor card handling skills. Teach a poor card handler how to shuffle properly and they will develop a fondness to plastic over paper all on their own.

So, that is your solution. Start marking those paper cards and, when she comments, tell her you did so, but could not do so with plastics. Problem solved when you return your ill-gotten winnings.
