I'm in for a GB barrel at auction. 😉 Who's local? What is that, 160-200 bottles (after the angel's share for 10 years) per 53 gallon barrel?
I’m in Nashville if that’s considered local. Probably a very expensive endeavor however

The person making the most money at that auction is gonna be the guy who shows up with barrel movers and bottling equipment/supplies.

Since there truly is a glut of whiskey, what company would even want those 35k barrels? You cut into your own sales if you start new lines, or buy the K.O. name and put juice in there. Scotch got hammered hard in the 70s/80s. Distilleries closed and they just left the barrels. Then 20-30 years went by, the market recovers, and somebody goes "hey you remember that old shit - bet we could sell it" and demand went crazy from a new generation of buyers. If you own free rickhouse space, I could see buying these dirt cheap in bulk and forgetting about them for a decade or more. Interesting times.

It won't be the last alcohol bankruptcy we see, but Kentucky Owl is likely done for. They owe $78mil and have 35k barrels stored with Bardstown (I think). Their parent company is Stoli, who is equally screwed. They want to do a Chapter 11 reorg, but the main creditors are like screw that, we want out now, this alcohol market sucks, and are insisting on a Chapter 7 liquidation. Group buy on a questionable K.O. barrel?
IN!

I wouldn't go multiple decades with bourbon. You can't store whiskey as long in new charred oak barrels as you can in used barrels like scotch does. It gets too oaky. Even Pappy 23, some people say is too oaky. But you might have some pretty damn good stuff in 5-10 years.

I forgot that part. I suppose once it matured you'd shove it into a stainless steel tank if the whiskey market was still booty cheeks. Blade & Bow just pulled off a 30-year bourbon. No idea how they did that.

Well, after @Billy Baroo and @Irish buy in for 50 bottles each, it should be more reasonable. 😉 I could probably wrangle 20-30. Are they storing their barrels themselves or with someone else in Bardstown? Would be curious if there is bottling/labeling where they're being stored (work a deal). Half joking. Instead of Confiscated, we could label it Bankrupt Bourbon or Broke AF Bourbon. Fitting for meetups.

Broke-Ass Bourbon

That label is primo.

The judge has already said "um guys, the bourbon market for your barrels is hot garbage" so once he approves the liquidation, the primary debt owner, Fifth Third Bank, controls the disposition of the assets. I'm sick as hell, too, I think I'm getting my Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 mixed up.

I’m gonna enjoy tonight’s libations before doomsday begins  :ROFLMAO:

The snow, turning to sleet and then freezing rain starts tomorrow evening and I’m fully prepared and expecting to be without power for a while. We had an ice storm in 2005 where about a half inch of ice crippled all of central NC. They’re calling for up to an inch of freezing rain by Sunday afternoon /evening :(

On a side note…I really, really, really need to find another one of these. Top 3 all time whisky for me!

Price check from the gurus: Russell’s Reserve 13 for $250? Also had 2020 GTS for $600.
That's $50-$100 above msrp depending on the batch, but a pretty good price overall. I think paid $275 for my batch 5.

No idea on the GTS those are out of my league lol

Bought a backup of this yesterday for $50 on sale. (Retail was $70 when first released, no idea what it is now) This is the one Bardstown Origin Series release that I like enough to keep on a main shelf. The rest are bottle kills and forget about them.

So I poured some. Every day is rye day (Sunryeday) if you try hard enough.
