I will always thumbs up Rare Breed.

Can confirm the bourbon boom is over near me. After walking in and finding 4x OBSK chilling at retail on a shelf, buying one, a couple weeks ago…today I walk in another store, see 4x OESO at retail on a shelf, buying one.

Is that the 4 grain? I have one that's delicious.
No idea lol. This one is pretty decent, but I've defintely had better picks of this. It's on the spicier side (though it deepens/sweetens after 2 or 3 pours), the last one I had was much sweeter, almost like a toasted smore. And I had a SiB toasted rye that was delicious.

Ok, dumb question time. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Old. Worth it at allocated pricing?

I've had it before and I recall it being quite nice - maybe it was the fact that I knew it was a "special" bottle at the time, but the memory of that drink has stuck with me. I have a chance to buy a bottle at a fair chunk lower than other allocated bottles, but still at a significant mark-up over MSRP.

I'm considering it, but am happy to be talked back from the ledge, lol.

Also, Michter's 10 for equivalent of $250? Fair price?

U.S. Whiskey is generally-speaking more expensive over here in Switzerland, but always happy to get feedback from more experienced folks. Thanks!

Michter’s 10yr has some excellent barrels. Both bourbon and rye. I wouldn’t pay a premium for Old Rip. Just get Weller 12yr and OWA and mix your own poor man’s pappy. 😂

Probably a yes for me; but I like collecting bottles

I wish I could find a bottle of Antique 107 over here. Weller in general, aside from Special Reserve, is pretty hard to find. I was happy to find a bottle of 12yo recently though.

What is the markup? I think MSRP is now $130(?), which I think is almost double where it used to be (and what I paid) even only a few years ago. I don’t think I’d pay more than $200, tbh, and I’d have a hard time even paying that unless I’d never had a bottle and wanted to cross it off my list.

TBH, it’s all about the mystique—the bourbon itself is good, but not nearly worth the price, imo. But having the bottle on your shelf does have some cachet, so maybe worth paying more. YMMV.

I think I already talked myself off the ledge.

Bourbon is marked up over here vs U.S. prices to start with duties/import fees, etc.

ORVW is available over here for typically around €900-1000, which is nuts, but found a place with it available for just over €600. it was a big enough difference vs typical secondary price to give me a momentary lapse of judgement.

I did have the chance to share some this summer with a good friend back home and it was very good, but part of that could have just been the good company and the knowledge of how hard to find that bottle is. It was a nice treat.

I’m good now. lol.

ORVW is the only pappy I would pay secondary for if I had to. If you could find one for 500-650 out the door and were compelled to buy one - I'd do it.

For Michter's 10 year bourbon, 250 is very fair vs secondary. Just pay attention to the single barrel code, some are better than others. I found 25A to be the best of the 25B, 25C I've had (I'd honestly pass on the 25C....). 24A is good too, but I prefer the profile of 25A better. 23A is legendary...and totally worth trying at some point. I have a 2016 michter's 10yr bourbon that's so different (in a good way) - it almost tastes like a rye!

If anyone wants to join me, I’m gonna pour my best stuff tonight to commemorate @allforcharity
Man, this hits. I remember lurking and reading a bunch of his posts re tournaments and chip handling / cleaning. He will be missed.

I unknowingly had some great pours last Friday night. Will pour something special this Friday in his honor. RIP.
