Full House
Funny brilliant guy. He will be missed. Always killed it, and was awesome on Who wants to be a millionaire
Yeah I feel your pain. This one hit hard. Not gonna lie..I've shed actual tears over this. Such a terrible loss. A man of unparalleled wit and audacity.
Jesus, this had me in tears by the end. I had never seen this one. Thanks for the post. You really need to spend half a day on youtube to appreciate the scope of his brilliance. But here's a bit of standup that is about as close to a perfect 8 minutes as you'll see:
And also, apparently, a degenerate gambler. I can't cite any sources, but I got the sense from watching him over the years that he lost all his money (which, for a successful entertainer, was probably a lot) more than once. I think he got it under control sometime in the last decade or so, but I'm not sure. One of the interesting things about Norm was that you could never really know what was true about him.For people that haven't really gone down the path of digging into who Norm MacDonald is as a comedian, a career professional, or a person, I'd highly recommend it. He obviously was known for SNL and some of his roles in movies, but he truly was a comedian's comedian, and had a brilliant mind, delivery, and painfully deep understanding of joke building.
RIP to one of the greats.
I heard this as well, may have been on The Adam Carolla Show. And also, apparently, a degenerate gambler. Oh, and this is amazing - I believe I just saw this on a youtube video last week, but the story was that that moth joke was improvised by Norm, on the spot, when Conan learned at the last minute that his last guest wasn't showing up. They had a whole segment to fill, so Norm told a long joke.
He definitely had some kind of gambling problem. I recall coming across a clip on YouTube once about Norm winning a decent amount of money at a casino and just throwing the cash in the ocean, because he knew he'd lose it back anyway. Can't find that clip now, but he talks about gambling a bit here with Larry, and mentions he went broke twice:And also, apparently, a degenerate gambler. One of the absolute best. If only he had been Conan’s sidekick for every show.RIP Norm. One of the greats.
Here's the greatest talk show appearance of all time, for anyone who is unfamiliar with Norm's brilliance:
I was just, over the weekend, telling my daughter how the man refused to say the word "vampire;" that he referred to all vampires as "draculas." Such a silly little thing. Made me laugh every time. You can tell a true fan of comedy by asking what they think of Norm Macdonald.
He was such a good comic. The joke was just one small part of the comedy. It was the complete mastery of the form, they way he could get a laugh out of the smallest turn of phrase. I'm so sad we'll never see another special. Never get to see him live.
