I wouldn't say boring. I enjoy them because the fields are easier to build. I am trying to get more of our regulars to try PLO though.

If I had unlimited funds I’d probably enjoy PLO more than NLHE. My biggest gripe is there’s too many suck out donks that overplay their hands and then hit runner runner some weird straight that they didn’t even consider as part of their outs.
Maybe it’s because most of my PLO experience is small online tournaments and these idiots overplay AAxx or KKxx no matter what the flop is. And my two pair with flush draw loses to a river K when all they had was KKxx.
I would imagine if you run bad you’re in 4-5 buy ins pretty quickly.
I don’t dislike it and sometimes enjoy to degen but id choose NLHE. Maybe I should try PLO in a casino. Hmmmm, now you’ve got me thinking.

Just starting to understand a little about Omaha and see why it would provide much more action. Then went back to hold ‘em and enjoyed the feathered nest of more knowledge. I am liking it though, have always shied away from it before.

NLHE Tournaments are boring.

Change my mind.

I guess it depends on what you like about poker. I like playing a game of skill in a social environment where I can win some money, so I love NLHE tournaments - the more tables the better.
But if you’re drawn to the action and the gambling, yeah I can see why NLHE tournaments might not be your first choice.

"feathered nest of knowledge" is right lol. flop bottom set in PLO you'd best be prepared to recalibrate your expectations.

I think my beefs with tournaments come down to
  1. you can play for hours with nothing to show for it
  2. we seem to get players who have watched too much tournament play on TV and as a result slow down the action with their posturing

#2 is totally fair and tough to argue with.

#1 I’m cool with. I generally see it as hours of entertainment for a fair price.

But maybe the boredom is something I’m drawn to, in a way. It’s challenging to maintain that level of discipline needed to win, for 8 hours +/-. When I’m driving home from a tournament and cursing myself because I screwed up ONE hand after six hours of A game, I’m just reminded that that’s a big part of what separates the pros from me. And it gives me something to work toward.

PLO is the hold'em version of mixed games

Hold ‘em is meh but all these guys who are like “give me enough cards so I hit my MDF with just having the nuts” I see what you’re saying and nah you’re missing the game

I'm the worst tournament player I know. But it's a relatively cheap way to get some practice in. I'm a better cash player but the swings bother me a bit.

There’s a reason our game is (usually) only quarterly tournaments with cash instead every other week. Have to add all sorts of bounties and other payouts to make it more interesting and not a slog.

This…cash is king.

Tournaments are the feeder league for cash games.
That’s how I see tournaments. It’s the safe and easy way to introduce players to the game of poker. I like socializing at tournaments and winning them is fun. But anything other than winning seems to suck no matter the stakes.

I always have fun playing cash. Even if I lose its all one big session. But the swings are a lot less.

And PLO IS SOOOOO much better than holdem. I have fallen in love with that beautiful game. So much more play. With holdem these days it’s mostly competent players coolering each other.

I find NLHE tournaments online are great paired with sports on TV. You can go back and forth depending on where the action is.
