Looking to have a home game stakes 1-2 to sometimes 5-10...Friends and aquantices. 2 tables max.

Need some advice, thoughts on total denomination and number to purchase...Any links would help as well.

Thanks in advance!!

Are you playing no limit or limit? If you can give us how your game plays with total number of buy-ins you are expecting more of us can help.

Thanks for the reminder!

No limit only
100 BB each game buy-in...

If your playing up to 5-10 I'd probably go for a total bank that would allow maybe $2.5k in total bank per player, so 18 players would be $45k. For 1/2 maybe $600 p/p?

I'm a bit of a n00b but I love doinking around in spreadsheets. I'll take a whack at a breakdown for ya and see what some of the more experienced members think. I'd definitely say these numbers represent a minimum for the scenario you describe.

Thank you for taking the time to do that!!!
Looking forward to hear everyones thoughts...

I might add that we also play 2-5, 100 BB stacks.

Max buy-in is 100 BB... Can rebuy unlimited up to 100 BB as much as you want..
Just like a typical casino cash game

But do your players typically rebuy? Or do they show up with one bullet and call it a night?

Is it the same people playing $1/2 and up to $5/10 or do you multiple groups?

If it is the same group either the $1/2 will be crazy with rebuys if they can afford $5/10 or the $5/10 game will be a nit fest with short stacks and limited rebuys.

I prefer the first scenario.

Def rebuy...
Some may buy in for max...Some not..
Just like a casino game, some times actions good, other times no

It's hard to know what to recommend when we don't know how big the game plays.

I play in a .25/.50 game that sees $8k+ on the table some nights. This sounds bigger than your 1/2 game.

Other useful information:
Professional dealer's?
Rake?

These can affect the number of $1 chips needed.

That breakdown seems ok and if it proves to be too small you can always add-on.

Two further thoughts - - -

More chips are better than less chips. If you can afford to sit in a 5/10 game then you can afford to buy more than a thousand chips.

The thread doesn't clearly define your interest. Are you considering getting custom chips, buying stock chips or vintage casino chips? Just as above, if you can afford to sit in a 5/10 game you can afford a custom set. There is a security reason for custom chips in a big stakes game and there is a "cool" factor to consider as well. But if you are buying a custom set, don't buy barely enough. Buy a big set (or huge) for the future - as we have learned, there are no assurances that vendors / molds / colors etc. will remain available indefinitely. Buy more than you need now because there might not be a second chance (or if there is, the runs might not match).

I meant agree to the spreadsheet as a start?
No. For a single table 1/2 game, I'd suggest 400-600 $5 chips.
I'd expect a $200 buy in would be mostly $5 chips - probably 36 of them. The recommended 260 on the spreadsheet doesn't even get you to the first buy-in.
Some people prefer to start with bigger chips on the table and that's fine. But you keep saying "the way the casinos do it," and thats with mostly $5's at a $1/$2 table.

If you're thinking of running games like that I'd get some with better chip security. I've got a couple of Chipco sets for sale in classifieds that would meet the needs but aren't as readily available.
I second this! The Veneratis are decent average chips, but very easily attainable. Someone could easily "Smuggle" some extra chips into the game if you go with a common stock poker chip. Although, if the group you play with is mostly friends, and trustworthy, this would be less of a concern. For me, I know that the group I play with would not do something like this, but if I opened up the game to outsiders/strangers then I would be a bit more concerned, and probably get a set that is harder to come by. I'm sure that you can find something in your budget that meets this criteria in the classifieds section. @courage Chipco's would be a good choice, but there are other options as well depending on what your budget is. I can't really help with the breakdown, but what most of the others have said seem to make the most sense.

100% with more chips is better even in a NL game. I have 600 $5's for my $1/1 game and once they all made it on the table.
For my limit games even the 1000 $1's I have are not enough. Encourages more active play and less time making change.

My sets have between 600 and 1100 $5s and all of them are always in play at single or 2-table $1/1 game.

Agree completely. I have 800 $5's in PCA set and over 700 of them got on the table the last time I had them out for a $1/1 game.

For the first game with my Club House custom set all 500 $5 were in play in a $1/1 game. I need to add 3 more racks eventually.

Both games were single table.
