Can someone explain to me why SBs are being posted with asking prices of $7-8/ chip? Is it just the same phenomenon that existed initially for the Boat chips before those sort of came down to earth? They’re ok looking chips I guess, some better than others. But modern THC so not leaded and imagine a paper inlay? I know someone will come on here and say supply and demand, but I personally just don’t get it.

Of course it’s supply and demand, but I guess your question is why is demand so high? I’m thinking that there’s been a resurgence of poker and chip collecting recently. Couple that with current owners holding their chipsets, and it’s the perfect storm for high prices, especially fracs.

why the demand?

Pros: cali, vibrant colors, thc, mint, inlay that has mass appeal, 5's are sick, 1s are under-appreciated, quarters 8v that can be relabeled to 5s.
Cons: inlay is not everyones cup o tea, price tag(supply/demand).

While I own cash AS, ES chips... the BTP and SBs hit the felt far more often and as a mixed set.

I see so many chips, especially some of the recent rhc sales that I look at, and think I wouldn't even pay half that price.

Don't even get me started on jacks.
I kinda wanna get you started on Jack’s, Mike ;)

In all seriousness re the SBs... I was just curious if there were initially high marks early for the chips because of perceived rarity and now people are just releasing stuff at that cost or if people still see them as a $8 chip. The context is, a few years ago, the boat chips began to trade hands at crazy prices because it was a shiny new object that people initially perceived to be rare (“no one is going to flip chips that was part of the buy” lolol) and so FOMO kicked in and many chippers (including me) were able to land some chips in PMs for crazy high prices. Those prices came down to earth eventually. And so am just wondering if there had been a similar phenomenon taking place over time for the SBs. It was notable to me that a couple of classifieds have been sitting there.

I agree by the way— they are cool looking chips, especially the $5 for me. But I still just don’t get it — and that’s ok, chipping is the eye of the beholder and different opinions is what makes a market after all. If you really really love 8v, ok I suppose.

Honestly, SBs are my favorite of all the NAGB chips.

Really? wow..........I guess its good that we all like different things. Actually, never mind. Your simply wrong ;) Out of the fake casino group buy chips I think I like the BTP cash set the best. The one dollar chip could use some work, but otherwise it is a set I would love to own (at less than fair market value lol).

I agree they’re not really worth the price. I just have a few barrels of the 43mm ones as my high denoms but I wouldn’t spend the money for a full set.

On the other end of the spectra are BCC chips, which are surprisingly cheap imo. Not that I mind since I’ve been able to aquire 3 nice sets this year at well below the prices of minty Paulsons. Aside from the usual BCC QC issues I think they’re definitely up there with Paulsons in terms of looks and feel.

They did ?

Where ?

Because
AST are $4-ish/chip now
AS $5 still at face value, $20 still at $8-$10/chip
ES quarters still 800/rack

and don't get me started on ES tourney or cash chips...

Supply & demand...member count & demand side exploded and for many these are still grail chips

If you really want a great set of PAULSON CHIPS, build yourself a set of WTHCs at about $4 per chip and forget about the NAGB chips.
I don’t own ANY of the NAGB sets and I don’t lose a moments rest over it.
 Hope this eases your mind.

I like the WTHC chips a lot. I don't "love" them. What he really should do is build himself a set of old school TRK's. Those are affordable right? :)

Solid advice.... I did some cherry picking in the boat catalogue but not a full set (@Thomacetti -> liar, AST set)

There were a few chips as you point out that held value. But at one point the AS $1s and AS fracs traded no different than the $5s. The AS cash $20s and the AS cash $5s definitely have staying power... great relabel chips that fit in nicely with a lot of sets.

And maybe things went back up as new member demand exploded. I took a hiatus in 2019 and most of 2020.... kids and work and what not. And when I returned there were Big Tops, SBs and Giraffes all added to the mix of grail sets (the latter being the coolest in my opinion— real inlay, leaded, and from a real casino... I’m a sucker for 3D14 spots and Cali colors).

Those would be something to lose some sleep over for sure. Affordable? Stick to Paulsons if your mind is set on them, a nice set can be put together in weeks vs years.

You're...

Hey MIKE...stay with the program buddie

IMO the word “grail” has a tendency to get watered down. Isn’t it most important to you to just put together what truly makes you happy?

And sorry I didn’t mean to create this thread looking for advice on how to build a set but I’m sure there are others following along enjoying the advice so good to keep it rolling.

I’ll offer mine — chip by chip and with persistence. And with a story— I fell in love with uncirculated Sundance chips early in the chipping journey. The problem? You couldn’t find ANY $1 chips in uncirculated condition (still can’t as far as I know), except for a few here and a few there. Well, it took several years and overpaying from time to time, but chip by chip along with the occasional lucky barrel find, I finally got my grail set of uncirculated condition Sundance’s. And man, it was a super rewarding journey and that plays a big part in my love for the set today — something that is truly worth more to me than it could be for anyone else.

At the time I bought my AS cash set, I loved the colors. But over time, I went back to loving my mixed THC set more... mostly old school, textured inlay real casino chips (plus a Le Cove 50c). Time changes preferences. Chipping be like that sometimes.

You've got it all wrong. Those Sundance suck, you should get rid of them to buy up all the NAGB chips. You won't regret it  :ROFLMAO:

It comes down to supply and demand as others have posted. Not too many of them changing hands publicly or privately. Like the inlay design or not, these are THC molded Paulsons in awesome colors and spot patterns. If you have one or two that are willing to pay well above what's perceived to be market value at that time, market value for the chips in itself increases as a result.

To go off tangent a bit, I agree with @Eriks . BCC chips are criminally underrated and the nice and/or rare BCC sets should be going for as much money per chip as their Paulson counterparts. Anything below that and I'm a buyer rather than seller for these "grail" BCC sets.
