Negreanu vs Hellmuth - High Stakes Duel (1 Viewer)

Phil is a baby, and while alot of his attitude is put on for branding purposes (can anyone seriously doubt that?), alot of it isn't.
Oh dear. Yes, I seriously doubt that. I’ve watched so much Phil content, I’m fairly certain that none of it is an act. Sure, he markets himself as the poker brat, but that’s because he has no other choice. He can’t control who he is.
did you watch the new High Stakes Poker? At a table full of young pros who think he’s a cash game joke, he dominates the table talk, bragging about himself nonstop. And it’s not just poker. He’s a world class name dropper. He brags about his business ventures. His books. His family life. EVERYTHING.
I listen to Mike Matusow’s podcast (though I wouldn’t recommend it, and I get a lot of Helmuth insight there. Phil is a good man and a smart man with a big heart. But don’t kid yourself. Humans are complex and with Phil, what you see when the camera are rolling is 100% reality - he’s incapable of controlling himself.

Watch more closely. He even laughs at himself when he does some of it.

And he even picked up a new one - exhibiting disgusting eating habits. Sure, I know he is a disgusting eater in his normal state, but since the commentators made such a running joke of it, he even laughs out loud as he takes each bite knowing he is giving them something to talk about.

Half of the "king kong-ship" world wrestling federation bravado is specifically for ratings. Half of his rantings are to make his opponents think he is tilting more than he is. The other half? Yes, born of an insecure, infantile psyche.

And Mike is a drunk, broke, jealous loser that tried to do the same thing Phil did (his nickname was "the mouth" afterall - I say "was" because does anyone even care about that dude anymore?) but didn't do it as well and isn't 1/10 the player Phil is.

Yeah I just disagree. Neither of us know for sure. The fact that he's noticed that Nick Schulman laughs at his disgusting eating habits suggests only a modicum of self-awareness, and maybe a sense of humor. If you think he's doing it intentionally for marketing or branding or ratings, I disagree. He's eating like a pig because he likes to eat like a pig.
I've watched his rants over the decades and wondered how he can be so successful when he A) gets so easily tilted and B) gives his strategies away to anybody not wearing headphones. I just don't believe that he does it on purpose to get an edge. I think he's good enough and smart enough to take advantage of whatever image he's projecting, but I believe that image is natural and not intentional.
I just think that like so many humans, he's a complex and flawed person. He also happens to the one of the all time greats.

Mike is a giant disaster. But Phil is his friend (though I wonder if he's more of a pet to Phil) so his insights are useful in trying to figure out Phil. You just have to cut through the Matusow bullshit to try to find something useful.
And Mike is definitely a great poker player. Thus far, he's brutally sucked at life. But he's really good at poker.

It is and it isn’t. It’s pretty meaningless regarding who is the better NLHE player. As far as who’s good at heads-up NLHE turbo tournaments? I think you have to acknowledge that Phil does well in this format.
Part of me feels bad for Daniel, because I’ve always liked the guy, and he’s clearly putting a lot of effort into improving his game, yet keeps getting effed by results. But he’s becoming such a condescending twat in his interactions with Phil, that he’s tough to root for, unless you really hate Phil.
(But the way Phil talks, he pretty much deserves that attitude from Daniel and the poker world. Strange days.)

Many players recognize Daniel as poker's "ambassador." Remember when he defended Daniel Colman and his fight for better tournament structures? It is disappointing to watch his inability to hold himself together better.

Growing up, Dnegs was always favourite of mine.

It's such a shame social media these days lets you see how much of a narcissist douchebag he really is. And He's also a a little bitch too.

I for one would hope that Phil turns down the 25k hand challenge from Doug, though. It turns poker into an endurance sport. Dumb.

I’ve always liked Daniel, but was happy to see Phil take him down both times. Negreanu has turned into an ass, or at least doing a good job acting like one on Twitter to promote his HU challenges.

Phil is the best at proposition bets, he won't play any thing like the CASH game heads up. It's not like he has to do the 25 K in a row he can spread it out easy.

2 tables at a time, online, no ability to read your opponent. And worst thing for Phil - no one (comparatively) will even watch 1/10 of the hands. Phil is to much a showman to ever agree to that format.

Just have Doug's computer play Phil's computer while they both sleep. It's stupid.

Phil shuts out another critic 3-0 in a very public forum. Phil needs to press both Antonio and Daniel to make some "I was wrong about Phil and I'm sorry" social media posts that are as public as their criticisms were.

Phil got the better cards this time, and by a long shot. But I wouldn’t take anything away from him - he played well and he won. And even Daniel said that Phil deserved to win this one.
for what it’s worth, neither of them were dicks this time around, so that’s a win for all of us.

Early on, Daniel got the best of the deck. And Daniel got the best run out on KK vs KK and a few other big pots. It's just that Phil kept out of big pots unless Daniel was the shorter stack. Personally, I think this was Phil 's worse performance of the 6 matches. He played very passively except when he was flat out bluffing!

And it would have been hard for Daniel to be a dick coming into a 3-0 shut out. Play back the weigh-in episodes from round 1 and 2 of both the Daniel and Antonio and see who is insulting the other. Phil is annoyingly condescending when he suffers any bad beat, but rarely does he ever go after anyone outside of the context of a particular hand/ game/tournament, etc. But these dicks said everything from he isn't even in the discussion of being the greatest player of all time, that he could only play tournaments, couldn't play deep stack tournaments, couldn't play mixed games, couldn't play cash games, couldn't play or even understand GTO play, would lose to any number of online heads up wizards (he has now beaten Jungleman, Doug P, Antonio and Daniel pretty handily), etc. etc. etc.

Now the discussion will turn to "play 100,000 hands on 8x tables online in 7 days or you suck." If Phil enters that type of challenge next he won't fair as well and these same idiots will ignore these amazing triumphs also (the social media poker world, Including the announcers, all picked Phil to lose match after match with almost robotic consistency) and say "see, we told you so, time has passed old school players like Phil by and they are just too stupid to understand the "evolving" game."

I find their arrogance, and failure to recognize Phil's undeniable results over his critics' rhetoric and popularity, insufferable and far more dick-like by a sufficient order of magnitude to render any comparison with Phil's frequent whining over every bad beat almost silly.

I saw this notification the minute I woke up yesterday and waited to come to this thread cause I knew the match would be spoiled. Lol.

Credit to Phil. He played well. I felt like his plan was to allow Daniel to play small ball and take the smaller pots by “outplaying” him, but then put him in tough spots when the pots got huge. The 9’s are what got Daniel imo. It was down hill from there. If he makes that lay down, he wins the match when they get it in with K’s.
