It’s been a busy week but now that I’m back from Vegas I wanted to share some updates on my poker and dining experiences. This trip coincided with the start of the WSOP, though I wasn’t there to specifically play it. For my wife and I, we make this annual trip so that we can have fun, so sometimes our trip is during the WSOP, and sometimes it’s not. It’s not a poker junket, but rather a true vacation where we do fun stuff together and I also get to play some low stakes 1/3 NLHE on the side.

Quickly, I’ll note that my previously posted thread on possibly playing 1 session with a move up to 2/5 was a “no-go”. All 2/5 games were playing much bigger with an almost constant $10 UTG straddle and huge stacks ($2500-$5000). There was no way my functionally 70bb ($700) buy in could have any chance vs that… so I stuck to my usual and comfortable 1/3 game with the max $500 buy in and a $200 top up in pocket, as needed.

Sunday, 5/24
We checked in to the Park MGM on Sunday about 4pm, and had a great, casual dinner off-Strip at Shàng Artisan Noodle in Chinatown (highly recommended!). It’s walk-in only with a self-sign in waitlist, so be prepared for a wait depending on the day and time. Let the host know if you want to sit at the bar to get a close up view of the noodles being hand-pulled. After dinner I was feeling a bit wired, so I headed off for some first-night poker instead of going to bed.

Aria 1/3 evening session
9:45p-12:45a = 3.0 hrs
In $500, Out $700 = +$200
-a good game with friendly players and enjoyable
-nothing really of note here… just off to a good start!

Monday, 5/25
Aria only had one 1/3 table and a huge waitlist so I headed to the Bellagio who had instant seating for my morning session after spending a few hours poolside.

Bellagio 1/3 morning session
12:50p-3:20p = 2.5 hrs
In $500, Out $500 = $0
-a weak game with little action, but very friendly
-lots of OMCs and nitty players easy to exploit by folding to their big bets, but no real money to be made
-this was my second experience of this kind of game here… I decided not to come back

Dinner at China Poblano (at the Cosmopolitan), one of our favorites. If you make reservations, request to sit at the small “tortilla bar” on the right and watch the ladies make fresh tortillas right before your eyes. My favorite is the pulpo (octopus) taco and the chips + guacamole prepared fresh tableside. There is also a very good selection of Chinese dishes if that’s more your preference. Good beer and cocktail selections round out the meal.

Aria 1/3 evening session
8:45p-11:45p = 3.0 hrs
In $500 + $200, Out $805 = +$105
-things def picked up tonight so I called in to get on the waitlist early
-first table was filled with sullen, quiet players… not my scene so I got a table change
-second table was great; lively conversation with friendly players
-a mix of tourists and “California locals” in for the WSOP
-an early loss or two put me down, but eventually I figured out the table and booked a small grinding win
-I’ll take it!

Running total = +$305

After busting the WSOP Day 1 $70 Mini Mystery Millions satellite near the bubble (14th/140) in the morning, I tried playing 1/3 at the Paris cash area… but it was too early in the WSOP to have any decent amount of players and fairly dead. Off to the Aria.

Aria 1/3 afternoon session
3:00p-5:30p = 2.5 hrs
In $500 + $200, Out $495 = -$205
-Card dead which led to trying too hard with weak starting hands
-Bled off chips, but realized my mindset was bad, so cut my losses
-Not happy with my play, but happy I was disciplined enough to get out
-Another good table of players to interact with, so there’s that
-Call it a “social win” that I paid $200 for ;)

A absolutely fabulous dinner at Echo & Rig in nearby Henderson. Fantastic and delicious steaks with some uncommon “butcher” cuts of meat. She had the Bavette and I had the Hanger, with shared sides of baby carrots in sorrel cream sauce and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Very affordable since we were away from the strip (right at $225 for dinner for two, including 4 cocktails and tip!). Our server, Phillippe, ensured we had a great experience. Go midweek for smaller crowds.

Aria 1/3 late night session
11:50p-3:05a = 3.25 hrs
In $500, Out $685 = $185
-the most fun table I played all week
-all out of towers/tourists looking for fun times
-drinks flowed, joking conversation, even the dealers were taking part… felt like a home game
-solid play with a some beats, but more and bigger wins
-no crazy/huge pots, but a comfortable night of poker as 4 of us took turns beating the stream of weaker players that rotated in (then out) of the game over the 3 hours until it broke

Wednesday, 5/27
Slept in a bit, then sat poolside and relaxed with my wife for a few hours. Headed over to Red Dwarf (off-Strip) for some great Detroit-style pizza I’ve been hearing a lot about. It’s a dimly lit tiny local dive bar with eclectic quirky decor (skeletons + tiki bar thatch + black painted walls + fluorescent graffiti, and shows 1940s black and white sci-if movies on the bar tv). Not much to look at but the funky vibe is alternative-cool and the slightly spicy sauce and awesome crispy pan pizza made this a tasty “win” and a “must-do-again” for us.

After an afternoon of shopping we had an early dinner at Sushi Hiroyoshi in Chinatown (highly recommended). This is an annual event for us after a local told us about it 6 years ago. Super unassuming and small (4 tables + 5 or 6 at the sushi bar) and located in a strip plaza, but oh so good and relatively affordable. The chef has multiple varieties and levels of “fatty-ness” of each type of fish (ie. 3 tuna, 3 salmon, 4 yellowtail, 5 whitefish, etc) + lots more. But you must call days ahead and book a reservation. Details on their website.

Aria 1/3 evening session
8:45p-12:00a, 3.25 hrs
In $500 + $200, Out $935 = +$235
-by now the WSOP is really winding up and the Aria has started their own tourney series, too
-super crowded with 2 tourneys running simultaneously
-all eight of the 1/3 NL games and a few of the 2/5 NL games are in the corral of tables set up outside the poker room on the casino floor
-lots of weak recreational players, but most are playing small stacks ($150-$250)
-met some nice and friendly people, but not much to write home about poker-wise
-still able to grind out another winning session, but it felt like work

Running total = +$520

Woke up early again due to the time change and decided to head down for some early poker…

Aria 1/3 morning session
6:30a-10:00a, 3.5 hrs
In $500 + $200, Out $195 = -$505OUCH!
-a terrible morning at what should have been a good table
-a bunch of splashy, loose, passive recs playing VPIPS north of 60% but who didn’t want to talk much
-not rewarding socially, but I stayed due to the potential to print $
-sadly, the cards decided not to cooperate
-I had pocket pairs (22-66) 12 times in 3.5 hours (!) and could never hit a set (broadway flops)
-I missed all flush and open-ended straight draws
-the best hand I had all morning was 2 pair
-since I could never make my big hands and was up against calling stations, river bluffing was -EV
-I only had 2 premium starting hands the whole time… both were QQ:
——first time, I lost $200 to AK when he bluff shoved on a low card flop, but hit an A on the river
——second time, I flopped a set of Queens and shoved, but lost $300 to KK when she hit the 2-outer K on the river
-added on for $200 with plans to go “revenge-mode”, but then decided to quit after only 1 hand since I was tilted

Chilled by the pool with my wife for a few hours to try and settle my mind, which was nice.

An early dinner was at 888 Korean BBQ (AYCE) in Chinatown… we’d been there before, but sadly it’s now getting quite run down and a bit dumpy (and really noisy) on the inside. Supposed to be a 30 min wait but it turned into 60… But the food was good and we left satisfied. I think we’ll find another Korean BBQ or Hot Pot place next year.

After dinner we went to The John Wick Experience at Area 15. We REALLY enjoyed this live-actor interactive experience where you’re part of a group of “associates” entering The Continental only to find that you’ve had bounties placed on your heads for helping John Wick, who is excommunicado. The experience is part play (with actors portraying Continental characters), part escape room, and part interactive action as you move from room to room. It ends when you enter an underground speakeasy where you can buy drinks. I got their special cocktail With A Pencil  . If you like the Wick Universe, do this… it was a blast!

No photos were allowed inside, but here’s a stock photo and a few of me and my With A Pencil cocktail in the speakeasy.

After this, back to the hotel and one last poker session…

Aria 1/3 late night session
*LAST POKER SESSION*
10:45p-2:15a, 3.5 hrs
In $500 + $200, Out $906 = +$206
-I really wanted to play 1 more time to end the trip on a positive note after my crappy AM session, both financially and mentally
-glad I played as this was my second favorite table of the trip
-really cool, chill players (except one, but I took a big bite out of his stack with pocket AA)
-we talked sports, baccarat, movies, jobs, travel, weather, hats, drinking, pets… everything except poker!
-was up $300+ before giving some back, but didn’t care as we were enjoying ourselves
-sad to end this game, but I had to sleep before our flight home 8 hours after the table broke

Final cumulative 1/3 NLHE poker cash out total = +$726 over 24.5 hrs
Win rate = $29.63/hr (right at 10bb/hr)

Quite a bit lower than my usual 18-20bb/hr, but happy to end in the black and we had a great time while in Vegas!

Once again, the Aria turned out to be the place that I had the best poker experience in Vegas. Send to be a repeatably solid choice for me.

I’d like to get over to the Wynn/Encore or Venetian some time, but hauling myself up the Strip just seems like too much work when the Aria is literally a 4-minute walk from my Park MGM hotel room through the connected back hallways. Maybe I’ll makes concerted effort to try them out next year.

Thanks for letting me share this year’s trip with you, my PCF Family.
-Clint
