I am in the process of building a cash game set of Royal China Clay’s I am changing the denominations so for the same price I can just make my own inlays. This is where I’m stuck. I’m trying to come up with a name for the chips. I don’t have a card room yet, so as my game and I grow I could have a name the room something hat has nothing to do with the chips. I don’t need every thing to be matchy matchy. I have ideas but am not excited about any of them so I’m looking for inspiration.

The question is how have others come up with the name for their chip set? Like “Aurora Star” how did this beautiful set get its name? It seems like random words put together that mean nothing. I’ve seen sets with very creative names like “Club Hel” but they were themed and the names went with the look of the colors of the whole set. I’m trying not to make something super cheesy while also knowing it doesn’t have to be perfect. Obviously casino chips are set to match their location, or others use the name of their room like such and such room, club, lounge, card room and so on.

1. Yes I’m over thinking it.
2. I can’t help it

I want to avoid names attached to a place like room, tavern, hotel, club, & so on because what I name my card room in the future could be very different. Favorite color is Blue

Realistically, when will you be "getting" your card room? (And do you mean making an existing space into a card room, or buying a place that has room?) If it's not in the immediate future, then you're restricting yourself to something that may not happen for a long time.

You shouldn't rush into this, especially if you're buying labels at additional cost, but chances are whatever you pick won't be an exact match to your eventual card room, so try to come up with something you're happy with now for what it is. Who knows, you might want to start a different set of chips for your card room, and you can alternate between this set and the next.

Also, unless you're going to have an actual tavern, hotel, club, etc. that might conflict, it's not a big deal to have a fictional "place" if it makes the name work. For my custom design I made up a fake tiki bar named "The Drunk Panda" located in a generic "Chinatown" (and some chips have "Formosa" on them which is the antiquated name for Taiwan where my family's from).

Pick something you like now and don’t worry about an eventual poker room name. Many of us have multiple custom sets with different themes.

By the time you have dedicated space for a poker room you’ll most likely be looking to upgrade the CC to either a custom set of CPC or ceramics anyways.

Agreed I'm still going to use the old plaques from the first set with my new sets.

Card room is in the works but probably a year out. Could be sooner though. I was thinking something to do with my home town but am coming up empty at the moment

I’m really looking for info like how other have come up with their names. Where they just made up, were they personal? If they were personal what was the inspiration?

My nickname in my game is Panda and I’m usually the designated driver so I have a few drinks and then sober up, so calling my fake tiki bar The Drunk Panda worked both fittingly and ironically.

I first started with a design based on what we called our game, which is “Third Friday Poker” because we played on the 3rd Friday of every month. Once I decided to go for a name that was less specific to our game it came together pretty quick.

I also have several other concepts floating around. Sometimes it’s like pulling teeth to come up with something, sometimes inspiration strikes.

You mentioned your home town. Don’t have to name it but is it known for anything you can get inspiration from? Landmark, industry, food, mascot, etc? Favorite sport or team?

HARDWELL UNDERGROUND

HARDWELL - Combination of the first four letters of best friend's last name and my last name combined
UNDERGROUND - We play in basements

Great response! Love that consent for the drunken panda! Kansas City is the location. It is split by the Missouri River and I was thinking something to do with “North of the River since all my players and I are North of the river guys.

You don't need a name for your set. It doesn't have to refer to a location, real or imagined. It doesn't require text, and if it has text, it's not required to be any sort of name.

@detroitdad has a set called Sunsets but that's really a description of the chips rather than a name:

The Rounders KGB sets don't really have names:

... and neither does the Cali Rounders set from @RainmanTrail :

Fantasy sets like the Inplays, Proteges, and Noirs have names, but the names don't refer to anything on the chips:

The Aurora Star chips were designed as if they were from a casino onboard a cruise ship; Aurora Star is the name of that fictional cruise ship. Empress Star and Pacific Star are likewise fictional cruise ships, all named as if they were from a single cruise line.

Big Top Poker started with an idea to pay homage to chips from the 1960s Vegas casino "Carousel" but took on a life of its own; the name and the concept go hand in hand, but note that "Big Top Poker" doesn't refer to a casino or club or cardroom or any other sort of location.

Sunset Beach is inspired, visually, by the classic Dunes inlays, but the theme and graphics don't refer to a casino or club, and neither does the name.

My own custom set (a work in progress) started off being inspired by an artwork style ("art deco illustration") with nothing else behind it. As I worked on it, it transformed into a theme based around space exploration, with a bit of a science-fiction feel to it, and the name came from that - but only after the entire set had come together first.

Inspiration takes many forms.

If you're looking for inspiration, I recommend you look at as many sets as possible - other people's custom sets primarily, but also home game fantasy sets, and even casino sets (present and past!). Where to find them? Browse the classifieds. Browse the galleries. Browse the showcase threads. Browse the Hall of Fame. Let the huge variety soak into your brain and then just let it sit there and percolate for a while... a long while. Inspiration will come when you stop searching for it.

Good luck, and enjoy the journey!

Tell us more about yourself. Your keen interests. Might produce some fruit.

Based on Hoss theme, I think it’s a little narrow for an entire card room so expand to:

The Ponderosa.
The Ponderosa Poker Room.
The Ponderosa Card Room.

Make a bounty or kill chip that says “you got Hoss’d!”

There’s no charge for this creativity, but you get what you pay for! :)

Inspiration is NOT mandatory. It wouldn't be inspiration if it were.
You could get funny with Pure Porn Poker (PPP) or Quality American Porn (QAM).
If it's about CPCs (not your case, from what I 've read), I always advise people to just use the brand's generic inlay, featuring their lighthouse. More re-sellable too.
