So I've seen several threads about mycasebuilder and I'm in love with the clean look and setup you guys are coming up with. I'm looking at eventually getting maybe a set of the 43 mm Royals that Apache is selling eventually (after we close on our house hopefully). So my question is, does anyone have measurements of the chip stacks so I can work on a design for a case while I wait or maybe someone already has a design? I'm not super familiar with the case builder app so any help would be appreciated.

I also have a set of the china clay dunes that I think would look great in one too it's a 600 pc set if anyone has a snazy configuration for those that would be cool too.

Is your plan to place barrels directly in foam slots? If so maybe I can help.... I could cut a test in some foam with my cnc machine and use a barrel of 43mm chips that arrived last week from Apache. Here is a case I customized. Depending on the set I am able to change lid inserts

My case builder is solid. The foam in the product we just made for @sheikh617 came from them.

We design the foam with cutouts 39*67mm which will hold a barrel of Paulson chips. The China Clays I've tried also fit but are more snug since they tend to be taller than casino worn Paulsons.

As to the tool, all you have to do is create a rectangle in the appropriate size, then clone it as many times as needed to accommodate your collection. Then lay out your configuration in the grid you want and shrink or expand the footprint of the foam accordingly. The tool takes a little getting used to, but it's pretty intuitive.

The chips I'm interested in making one for are the Royals from Apache and they're 43mm so I'd need to get measurements for those since I don't currently have any 43mm chips.

@Jon Udell I'd like to put them directly into the foam slots if possible I really like that clean look.

I can't comment on the height of 20 Royals - but there's a thread where everyone is posting pictures of them... so I bet if you asked nicely someone would probably measure a stack for you so you'd know how tall your cutouts need to be.

Failing that, cutouts 43mm x 70mm would probably be a safe bet.

Thank you Mike. I'm hoping to get some time to play with it today. Gives me something to occupy my time while waiting for the house to close so I can buy some for myself!

Ok so here's what I've come up with so far

case.JPG

This is using a Doro D3114-5 case. I'm going to have to do some adjusting because the dimensions I used were slightly off. According to Empty Light in the Project Discussion thread for the Royals the chips vary in thickness from 0.129" (3.2766mm) to 0.135" (3.429mm) so my measurements for stacks could be off as much as 5mm each which could greatly impact the layout. The separation between all the barrels is 10mm for a nice evenly spaced look and easy chip removal.

Anyway what I'm looking to do is have 20 full setups for starting stacks with mixed chips obviously and the rest just regular barrels of chips for Chip ups, Rebuys, etc. I'm not too concerned about having cutouts for cards or buttons, although after I redo the layout for the extra barrel length who knows how it will end up. I might like to add a space for some plaques but again that all depends.

I want to be able to transport a minimum of 1000 chips but the more I can carry the better. One month we might only have 1 table, others we have 3 so I just like to be prepared.

If you guys have any tips, advice, suggestions please feel free. I'm looking for any help I can get. Especially if you've used this site before. Also if anyone has any real life measurements on a mixed 35 chip stack of Royals and an unmixed 20 chip I would greatly appreciate it. Need to get a good average if possible.

My only advice is to keep in mind that the foam is flexible... so a snug fit isn't the end of the world. Also, I don't know how much space you have between your cutouts but you'll probably want at least 7mm or so... if nothing else so you can easily get your fingertips in between the barrels for removal.

Thought I put it in my post but I guess I forgot, theres 10mm spacing between everything.

1000 chips in loose barrels sounds like a nightmare, why not make the cutouts sized to fit 43mm racks?

Well the idea is for them to fit snugly similar to this design from gkit80. They're not going to be "loose" not sure what you're thinking. These are foam closed cases, the chips should be firmly held in place.

Ok...this is my favorite so far. Its in an AR case. As a firearms enthusiast this kinda does it for me. I'm gonna need to tweak it once I get some specific numbers but unless I get some better info about double stacking foam this is pretty sweet. This will hold 1500 chips with 20 starting stack setups and 40 barrels of chips. Right now I'm just trying to go as high as I can just to see what can fit where. I swear we can't close on this house fast enough!

The 3D modeling is pretty epic!

Looks nice - I might suggest making sure there's enough margin around the perimeter so that the case will close.

It's also worth noting that 1500 chips is going to make for pretty heavy case - It wouldn't surprise me if this thing fully loaded exceeds 40+ lbs.

Yeah I'm figuring 35-40 pounds. I have 2 AR cases right now, one just has the cutout for the AR and a couple mags and it probably weighs roughly 15-20 pounds, the other is my range case that has room for 6 mags, sidearm and 6 mags I'd say when the mags are full its a 50 pound case easy. Its a much nicer brand case than the ones on the case builder site but I'm sure it will hold up well.

I'm still not completely sold on anything and I could very well drop the 1500 idea and drop down to 1000. Its just fun playing with the app now that I'm getting more familiar with it.

Hey Mike you wouldn't happen to know how easy it is to get foam cut on there to double stack in a case would you? There's several nicer cases that certainly have a deeper base that would accommodate that type of construction. I just don't know what the logistics would be for that type of project with foam. I know I'd need finger cutouts for the chips in the bottom layer simply because they'll have to be fully recessed into the foam. The top wouldn't need that as long as everything clears but I guess I'd need finger cutouts for removing the top layer of foam to access the lower? I've emailed the site but they've not gotten back with me. Their FAQ says they can do it but its an upcharge.

If I understand what you're asking me, you want to have one layer of foam with objects embedded, then another overlaid on top of with for even more storage?

Weight issues not withstanding, how would you access the items in the bottom foam? The foam isn't mean to be moved around without any support, so lifting the top foam out to access the bottom wouldn't be feasible unless you emptied it, which would be cumbersome.

Plus, the items in the bottom foam couldn't protrude above the top of the foam at all... which isn't a big deal if you have cutouts.

I don't know if they offer that service.

Yeah I know I'm kinda pissing in the wind a bit here. I knew it would be a pain to remove and replace but I honestly didn't think about the chips weighing it down for the upper layer, so good point. Maybe if the foam had a rigid base or structure to it I could do that but then I'm looking at even more cost and time. I guess I'll just stick with the single layering and try to decide if I want to do just 1000 pieces for transport or go with the full 1500. Just hate to go smaller than 1500 it comes in handy on those months when we have 20-30 guys.

My only real concern about weight is that the case/handle can support it in whatever case I'm using. I'm not a small guy so 30-50 pounds isn't a big deal to move around comfortably. Right now I transport my 1000 piece tourney set and a 600 piece cash set to every monthly game for the main game and side games once people are out, but they're in 2 separate bird cages.

We just finished a portable case for a PCFer. Would something like this interest you?

Thats beautiful! its probably a little rich for my blood though. If I had some sweet Paulson's that I wanted to carry around something like that would be ideal but I'm still just a baby with my CC's. Maybe one day though. I appreciate the help btw.

Ok so I've gotten a lot of measurements over the last few days. I have some questions with anyone who's dealt with the PE foam in these cases. Is there much give to it? Also will the foam be like most other foams and loosen up or break down from usage over time? I ask because my measurements have went as follows.

35 chip mixed stack (Starting stacks) has ran from 116.93 mm to 117.77 mm a 20 chip unmixed barrel has ran from 66.41 mm to 67.45 so roughly a 1 mm spread in size on each stack. I'm wondering whether it would be best to say go with 117mm for the length and allow the foam to "grip" for lack of a better term the chips better and the same basically for the 20pc barrel going for 66 mm on the length (only 2 barrels were over 67 mm).

So any advice on the plyability of the PE foam would be great, because when dealing with this many cuts a few mm can make a huge difference in space. Also I worry about the foam wearing out and losing its grip over time. Obviously I don't want it to be squeezing the chips so they're difficult to remove but a little grip is fine.

This is what my final design ended up being. Was able to add slots for a plaque and dealer button/card guard. I'm super stoked to see how it turns out, I think its a 10 day turn around on custom orders right now. I'll add some finished product pics with a review once it comes in. The design still has to be reviewed by mycasebuilder as well I guess to ensure there are no conflicts. The only thing that worries me is that some of my cuts go into the yellow area on the case layout? Anyone know exactly what the yellow area represents? Only thing I can figure is possible conflict with the lid closure? I'm figuring mycasebuilder will bring that up since I specifically said in my notes that I was unsure what that area represented and wanted to ensure there was no conflict before proceeding. I also paid the extra 11 bucks for the protection to where I get one freebie "redo" essentially so if the first one isn't quite right I can send it back and they will cut me a new one at no charge other than return shipping.

So I figured I'd do my review in here where it began. When my wife surprised me with the set of royals chips from Apache I had zero storage for 43mm chips. So I set out in a journey.

I looked at several options. Harbor freight Apache cases, regular pelican cases but those solutions required me to have racks for the chips, which I also didn't have. So after some research I saw that a few people on here had used mycasebuilder to build custom cut foam in cases for travel storage. Now I had a 1500 piece set, and we regularly run 25+ people sometimes upwards of 40 so I use my sets. So after a lot of deliberation which you can revisit above I settled on a firearms case for an AR-15.

The case

I designed the cutouts in mycasebuilder software to fit 20 prebuilt starting stacks and 32 slots to fit an additional 800 chips. The design in the computer is in previous posts the final results are below.

It came out amazing. I chose the PE foam which is a closed cell stiffer foam. I had to meticulously measure a ton of barrels of chips kinda got a running average and that's the numbers I went with. I choose a depth of 25mm. (My only regret, more on that later)

My measurements were on the money.

The case fully loaded weighs in at exactly 45 pounds. Which is 1 pound more than my fully loaded AR range case.
20190913_165733-jpg.337688

The foam is snug and fits the chips perfect. Like amazingly perfect. The only slot that's tight is the one for the plaques which I originally measured for just 1 plaque but it will fit 2 they're just tight. I also have a prominent spot for my beloved ND card guard. At least the newest version of it.

The only regret is I wish I had cut the chips about 5 mm deeper. The only reason being it is tight to close the case. That's something that I know from personal experience with firearms will ease as the foam breaks in but right now it takes a ton of effort to close the case.

I know the weight wouldn't be ideal for someone slight of build, but being a large guy it's not much at all, and the longer case seems to balance the weight easier.

There's no doubt I would and probably will use this service again. Maybe not for as large of a set though. The case with the custom foam, shipping and the insurance of a recut of the foam ran 130 or so, I can dig up exact numbers if needed. That also includes the case obviously. There are many cases that are budget friendly that could easily fit a 500-1000 piece set.

Bottom line, A+ service and quality. I'd for sure recommend them for a unique storage/travel solution for chips. If anyone wants any additional information feel free to ask!

Whoa man that is awesome!!! I started working up a layout of the same case but was hoping you would post this. Thanks for posting this.
