Gold Money Toad
(Feng Shui Wealth Frog)
The Jīnqián Chán (金钱蟾), literally meaning "Gold Money Toad" or "Three-Legged Money Frog," is one of the most popular symbols in Chinese mythology for attracting wealth.
The Legend of Liu Hai and the Toad
The story is a mix of Taoist folklore and quirky animal behavior. The most famous version involves a 10th-century Taoist figure named Liu Hai, who was a high-ranking minister turned wandering immortal.
The Greedy Toad: Legend says there was a three-legged toad named Chan Chu who lived in a deep, dark well. This toad was notorious for being greedy and possessed a supernatural ability to "smell" gold and silver from miles away. It would hoard treasures and was generally seen as a bit of a troublemaker.
The Capture: Liu Hai, using his spiritual powers, decided to tame the creature. He knew the toad couldn't resist the shine of gold, so he tied a string of gold coins to a red silk thread and lowered it into the well.
The Transformation: The toad bit the coins and was pulled to the surface. Instead of killing it, Liu Hai converted the toad to Taoism. From that day on, the toad traveled with Liu Hai. Whenever they encountered poor villagers, the toad would "spit out" gold coins to help them.

The Gold Money Toad is often depicted sitting on a pile of gold coins & ingots, and he's ready to give them to you!
The Gold Money Toad is almost as popular in Chinese retail businesses as the Maneki-neko cat, often placed next to cash registers. For personal displays, place it facing inwards toward your home or office on an elevated surface (table or shelf).
In the plaque design, the background watermark comes from this traditional knot & string of money.
The string of coins in the middle stripe follows the story, where it was used as a lure to capture the money toad. You can also interpret it as the successive bets in poker used to lure/capture the pot.
