One of our sons (18yo) has been bitten by the poker bug and he and his friends in town have been playing quite a bit. They play mostly NLHE and cash games for a 10-20 dollar buy in. I know most of the kids from sports, high school etc. In fact I probably blushed with pride a little yesterday when he asked me if we ever do bomb pots in our games, because they do!

He is home on break from college along with most of his buddies, and the teen poker scene in South Lyon is hot! He just texted me to ask if he could use my Aurora Star cash set to host a game today. Our oldest son has already ruined one of my tables by sitting on it during a party in our basement lol! But I reluctantly said yes, as long as they treat my table and chips with R-E-S-P-E-C-T! I have plenty of other lesser (imo) sets he could use, but what the hell I didn't buy those chips to sit on a shelf.

Would you let your kids use the nicer chips in your collection? I once read a book called The Last Lecture about a dying man who had some interesting perspectives on life and if you have ever read the book you may recall where he dumped a full can of Coke in the back seat of his new convertible so his nieces and nephews would worry about screwing it up while they were riding in it! That is what I immediately thought of when the Aurora Star request was filed.

Hosting at your house? Or a road game?

Knowing your kids, I would allow it, but I might suggest another set (as the players won't know the difference, and you have some other great chips that they could use.

For a road game, I'd be more leery.

My son is so young. He's nearly 4 now but he is OBSESSED with my chips.

Whether I'm packaging or whatever, he's all over them. He takes them in and out of racks and repeats. His little hands can already grab entire barrels.

Don't know how I will ever be able to refuse him anything of mine. Maybe I'll keep the leaded Empress chips away...

I can see he is gonna love poker as I do. Many years ahead for me however!

I bought my first Paulson Pharaohs at 18 for $20 tourneys we used to play in high school, made the experience feel much more authentic and my buddies loved getting to play with them. Super fond memories! (Never mind that I’ve probably bought and sold close to 6 figures worth of chips since then haha). If you have a casino used Paulson set I’d say that would be my go-to to let them play with so they’re using “real” chips and if you’re worried about $2-6/ chip boat chips, or as @Jeff mentioned it is a great way to instill respect in kids - however I’d be more worried about chips accidentally wandering off in friends’ pockets more than anything.

I let my kids play with all of my chips now, I post pics of it regularly. If it is at my home I would definitely let them use the good stuff.

If it was somewhere else I would probably send a different set. More out of fear of them getting lost/stolen. But if the kid has proven to be responsible in the past I would most likely let him after talking to him about making sure he knows what I would expect of him.

Man I would absolutely love the opportunity to share my obsession with my off spring. I agree I would have the RESPECT conversation... but you know he is going to take pride in sharing his awesome father's chips with the group! Hopefully they all catch the bug and we get another generation of PCF members out of the deal! Man this is an awesome post! Glad you decided to let it happen!

Congratulations on having a son that shares in your hobby, at least you will have someone to leave your chips to down the road that will love and cherish them like you have. We see so many people inherit priceless collections that only see dollar signs!

Yeah I'd let them use the nice chips. That's what they are made for, and besides chips are tough I very seriously doubt 1 home game would make any noticeable difference in their condition.

I'd just be worried about my kid losing them. He's respectful enough about taking care of things and not breaking them, but not so good about cleaning up after himself.

SO... my solution for that? I just traded some vintage SW figures for a heads up set to give him for Christmas. Box literally arrived as I was reading this thread!

That headsup set looks nice. I am sure he will enjoy that!

Game at home, I think the downside is minimal. Any chips that don't get put away should eventually be found. At a stranger's house, no go without my personal supervision.

Last time I loaned a good set out, the set came back fine, the wood Brands on Sale wood chest came back wrecked. Now my lasered faux clay set is the loaner outside the house. In a metal indestructible case.

I got this set for just this sort of thing... I figure that if they know these are available to them, they will use 'em and I don't really care what happens. They are old school leaded THC's. So they are nice chips, but they are their nice chips.

They even have my kids initials. If they want to use any of my other chips they are more than welcome but it'll have to be for a home game, they won't be traveling without me.

Shoutout: I’m also still very thankful for the assist given to me by @David O for helping me get these.

Whew..... I would love for my children to pick up the hobby and use my equipment. I would entirely gauge it on how respectful he/she is and whether or not I can fully trust them. College kids are rowdy and there might be food and beverage so the last thing I'd want back are sticky chips or for a few to get lost. That being said I would give them a chance and use it as a measuring stick to see if you can trust them with nice things.

I can definitely see my son will someday be perusing my collection. YUP! No question

Check this footage, like just 2 minutes ago.

My son is particularly enamored with CPC $5K chocolates.

Don't mind the hair folks, we aren't cheap, he just has nuclear meltdowns when we have tried so we let him keep it. He has more hair than most of the girls in his pre-school class:unsure:

Yeah - good lesson on treating others property with care and respect. As long as his friends don't harvest the fracs, it's a win-win.
This is the only thing I would worry about. A few chips disappearing. Teenagers do dumb things in the heat of the moment, and I dont think they understand respecting other people's property.

Maybe just stress he needs to dona count before and after before everyone leaves!

I got a rack of Las Vegas slugged plastic chips at a holiday party and gave them to my son. He plays around with them and we use them for 5 Card Draw when my parents are visiting. I'm stepping it up a notch though! My Scrub Donkey set will be for heads up or 4-handed with my parents. I'm going to introduce them to the turbo tourney format.
