Now that I have let the cat out of the bag on my idea! I guess it's time to post it... we all have certain chips that are our favorites, for me its hot stamp fracs! Been obsessed since I started my journey into higher grade chips. Some of them carry very high value, it is not un-common to pay $300 or more for a rack depending on what they are!

Since I have joined PCF and learned what paulson, BCC and TRK stood for in the back of my mind I was wondering if any casinos ever made a 1 cent chip! After research i found that Artichoke Joe's did indeed make pennies, not only one but at least 2 series of them. Thus far I have gathered 4 pennies and the whole time I have thought... man I would like to do a thread to gauge just how insane we are! Which leads me to this question. Understanding that not all and possibly the majority of members probably have zero intrest in these but based off value and rarity of some chips the face value of my 10 chips here is a whopping 44 cents! I have about $94 invested in them... anyone that is not a chip collector would say I'm absolutely insane! I love the chips and always looking for more!!

So I submit this as my entry to the scrub donkey club! Paid $94 for $.44 worth of chips... Anyone else have a ridiculous entry they would like to share??

It's a gloomy dark rainy day, I have a book over top blocking glare from the light but also hurting their true colors! Absolutely amazing chips!!

I'm curious what the use of the pennies are, why the would have been made?

Those are some sweet chips Ben. I’ve never seen a 1 cent chip before.
Had no idea a one cent chip even existed.
Most casinos even In today’s times have penny slots. I’ve never seen a slot machine that would take a chip though.
Maybe this casino had penny table games, something to maybe do some research on.
@JWC may have some information on these, I believe he is from the Reno/Carson City area.
As far as a ridiculous entry goes............
I just recently bid $320 on a single $25 chip in an eBay auction and lost to $325 in the last second.
It was on a super rare chip that I wanted to complete a sample set.
I guess that would qualify me even though I lost, I really thought $320 would get it done. :vomit: :wow:;)

I feel old enough without adding a Mr to my name...
I do apologize as every person every day of my life tells me the same thing... sorry I was raised with manners, I have people half my age working for me that I call Mr. Every single day. I get yelled at for Ma'am as well but again it's an old habit beaten into me, some people dont mind being shown a gesture of respect!

For what it’s worth, in some areas of the country “Mr + last name” is respectful but “Mr + first name” is reserved for when folks are being condescending... which of course makes it the opposite of polite in those areas.

When my coworkers who are located in NC call me “Mr. Aaron” I have to remind myself they are being respectful. If someone where I grew up ever called me “Mr. Aaron”, I would tell them to go F themselves.

Truly not knocking you. I know you are being polite.

The single color 1c and 5c chips were used in training games after need the name or artichokes poker palace. My wife and I played in a couple of them, and he let us harvest some chips within limits. He had bingo, theee poker tables, and five or so slot machines. He used to have a cat, Mousey, that sat at the table while we played. I fought that the casino was profitable, but it kept Joe busy in retirement.

Can you imagine what kind of a rake would be in a casino penny poker game?

I don’t recall a rake or drop in those games. They only happened a few times, and were designed to teach people to play in a casino. Similar to the free craps lesson tables in casinos. The poker palace was prior to the poker boom. Joe passed in his mid to late 80’s, and he often referred to how he ran things in San Bruno in his 29’s and 30’s.

Awesome story, John!
