I've slowly begun to upgrade the home dice chip set I've used for years to paulsons. When this is complete it will likely be the set I own for life. I'm so pleased to have found this forum fairly recently and so far I've been able to find some great $25 and $100 chips on here. I'm compiling a mixed set with a preference for actual casino chips.

I'm always browsing the classifieds and eBay looking for deals but wanted to know what my options were for $5 chips before putting in a wanted post.

I'd like to get two racks of fives and from what I've seen the Aztar, Horseshoe and Native Lights chips look fairly common and at a very affordable price range. With the Native Lights the favourite of these I would happily settle for these should they come again.

I do have a slight preference for the THC mold, are there $5 chips that come up at a similar price range?

Here are some THC $5's that you might see pop up in the classifieds now and then and would be worth adding to your chipping radar... prices and condition varies:

Some of these look excellent, any of the red ones in particular. Am I correct in saying the Aruba chips are the only ones that used to belong to a real casino?

The first 3 shown were all used in an actual casino. The rest were not.

On average THC chips command a premium over RHC chips, especially in new condition.

It sounds like you may have already found your $25 and $100. Letting us know what those choices are and what condition they’re in might help us to provide you with more ideas regarding a THC $5 that fits your mixed set.

Also, I’ll tag you in the official mixed set thread in case you haven’t come across it yet. Some fantastic sets there to draw inspiration from.

PCA 5 are among my favorite chips ever. They are all in used condition but should be easy to acquire and price shouldn't be too crazy.

I have so far acquired Aztar Evansville $25s (used) and PCR 100s (like new). After I have the fives sorted I may turn to looking at a few 500s.

The official mixed thread makes for a wonderful browse.

If you're looking a lifetime keeper set, at some point you may reconsider the choice of mixing molds (RHC, suits and potentially THC) as well as the sharp condition of the PCRs and the worn rounded condition of the Aztars as stack heights and feel will vary significantly, just my $.02. Good luck with the hunt!

I agree with both points and was going to say the same....

I very much appreciate your concerns about the different weight and feel of my chips. Indeed I can feel the 100s and $25s in my possession handle very differently. Some of you may think mixing a set like this is blasphemy and look at my chips with high eyebrows! After playing with them for a few years it may even irritate me.

But in my experience paulson chips or anything like them are rare to non-existent in the UK. Home and pub games are all plastic chips and the few casinos with poker may have some sort of ceramic variety. Having any sort of clay chip, let alone the quality of paulsons (used or not used) is going to blow away the competition and impress my guests as a novelty. A mixed set gives me the chance to show off different casinos, designs, moulds, inlays, hotstamps, conditions, etc... and become a talking point at the table.

In an ideal world I would have an infinite amount of money and I could get a full set of everything, ha!

I'm also well aware that while I call this my 'lifetime' set these chips tend to hold their value pretty well, so if I wanted to swap out a denomination it would be fairly painless. If I keep browsing the forum as much as I do that may happen a fair few times!

This also lets you try all the different kinds of chips so down the road you can tweak your set to what you want.

Plus any Paulson's you have in play will be awesome to use (y)

Shameless plug ...... Indiana Aztar's are great Paulson RHC chips. I say this all the time, while they are not everyone's dream set, they are great chips with some great colors. The fact that you have the Aztar $25 secondaries already, you are well on your way making a killer set (they are much better than the primary $25's)

I think I saw recently that PdC came from a casino? I always thought the Golden Eagles and Scandia did to?

Chip guide says...

Palais was a casino: http://themogh.org/cg_chip2.php?id=QCMOPD&sort=type
Golden Eagles were for a casino that never opened: http://themogh.org/cg_chip2.php?id=COCKGE&sort=type
The Scandias are a Paulson Fantasy chip: http://themogh.org/cg_chip2.php?id=NOXXSC&sort=type

I guess it depends on how picky you are, a casino that never opened is a casino chip as far as I'm concerned. As long as it's unique and doesn't share a common design theme (like the Paulson classics, pyramids, CdM, etc).
