At our next cash game (tomorrow) we're starting a high-hand jackpot. A small blind (or ante if it's not a blind game) is taken out of every final pot into the jackpot. If someone hits a sufficient hand, quads for most games, they instantly win the full jackpot. If no one wins, the jackpot carries over to the next session.

My player group has three categories.

1) Those who attend every game.
2) Those who make about half the games.
3) Those who might come once or twice a year.

My concern is that on the off chance someone in category 3 takes the jackpot, the others who come more often and thus contributed more might become unhappy with the system.

I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has a better way to handle this.

If you have an ongoing jackpot, then it's fair game to whoever wins it regardless of how often they've attended games and/or how much they've "contributed" to it.

If people are legitimately going to be mad or put off by a more casual player winning the jackpot, then that's all you need to know of why you should or should not institute it in the first place.

I do my HH as @Shaggy said, we pay it out every game at midnight. No qualification to win it.

That way I don’t have to hold a bunch of people’s money from game to game. Someone always wins and nobody gets mad when some guy wins 4 games worth on money that only shows up 1 time.

Its the same in the casinos, right? You have some person that happens to be playing that night who never really hits the casino vs the regs that put in 8-10 hours per day. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe, if it gets high enough, some of your more irregular players will become more regular.

I use to do a nightly high hand when I hosted regularly. It went well. But if you are playing mixed games, then I would have a criteria for "instant winners" who hit qualifying hands.

I like this method. One other advantage is it will help keep your players there until the end of the game.

I agree with @Shaggy

Pay it out each night. Also could require the winner to have to be present up until a certain cutoff time as incentive to stay at least until then (I.e. 11pm).

The game I regularly attend:

HH - Everyone interested ponies up $2 at the begginning of the game. HH of the night takes it. No carry-over.
Bad Beat - Rake $0.25 out of every full $5 in the pot for the jackpot. BB = FH beat by Quads or better. Both players must use both of their hole cards to qualify. Carries over until hit. Loser gets 40%, Winner 30% & rest of the table splits 30%

Make it high hand of the night, regardless of the "value" of the hand. Payout at the end of the night.

I don't rake to generate the jackpot... everyone interested ponies up $5.

This is exactly what I do - has been really fun in the game I host!

I take $1 out of every pot over $20/25 (depending on the game) and pay it out every 2 hours. Usually ends up around $40. I like the reset every 2 hours so the bar isn’t always set high.
