Have Chinese cards mold replica sets gone too far? (4 Viewers)

I'm pretty sure that currently at 18K views this thread has done more to promote Chineese Card Molds than anything. If people wern't aware of them before they probably are now.
Proponents are elated. Business is booming.

I'm thinking that Microsoft set should be next!

Put it this way, I don't think some clubs would welcome you in with open arms. :)
How rude!

Now what I meant...

If we had a "New China Club owners group" NO I don't think someone that has fakes "clones" whatever you want to call them belongs in that club... why?? You don't own "New China Club chips" you own fake copies of those chips.
That's fair, and I agree with that. Sorry for spinning your words, it was not my intention. I started my post with writing that it was probably not what you meant, but it still felt it was worth commenting just incase other people read those paragraphs like me, to clear up the misunderstanding.

Bump.

thankfully its only the RHC Mold. If it was THC, I probably would have finally gotten myself a set. :cool

Tina has a RHC mold? While I like it, it's probably crossing the line between tribute and forgery. Who put sweet Tina up to this?

Also, knowing China's low safety standards in general, anyone have them tested for lead?

If you're ever in a situation where you have to decide based on pics, it's worth noting that the TinaHC looks to have all the canes in the same direction, while on the paulson RHC 2 of the 8 canes are facing the opposite direction. (Hence the name of the mold Reverse hat and cane)

The PNY is going to look pretty legit in photo to untrained eyes.

But since the TinaHC Mold is out, pretty sure there will always be people who will buy them

Well it can’t at all handle text in the mold, or presumably any other kind of detail. Seems like a dead giveaway for any replicas of oversized inlays.

I’ll never understand why people would want copies/knockoffs of anything. But there’s no accounting for taste. Personally, if I can’t have a real thing, I’d be much happier with a different thing.
Not wanting it and not understanding it are two different things. I dont want these chips but I certainly understand them. I enjoy Bruce Springsteen tribute bands; I know they're not the real thing, I know Thunder Road won't sound nearly as magical but its entertaining and it emulates a Bruce concert for a $5 cover instead of fighting for hundreds and beating traffic. No, these chips don't sing for you but they look pretty and are available/cheap/convenient, just like the bar band copy of the greatest bar band.

I make no argument that collectors should want these or everyone should like them, I just get why people like them. Im the other way: I'll never understand why people buy rare things just cause they're rare or to not use them, I'd most times prefer the tribute when it comes to hobbies.

Not half bad
Make me an Olivia or Vinny set and I’m in

GPI won’t sell to the public cause it’s a waste of time
Let’s see if they waste time chasing that lolz

No, I honestly don't understand it.
In my mind, there are two reasons to have copies - 1) to trick people into thinking you have the real thing, which is just sad; or 2) to pretend you have the real thing, which seems childish.
I get that it's not that simple. Somebody raised the example of a real painting vs a print. I do have framed prints in my home and I recognize that there's an inconsistency with that and with what I said above. So I know I don't have this all figured out perfectly. But I stand by my statement - I don't understand why people would want to play with copies because to me it feels either deceptive or childish. It's probably the same reason why I never cared for fantasy chips. Why do I want chips that pretend to be from Casino de Mexico? There isn't even a Casino de Mexico! I'd rather just use chips that say Fun Nite, and hope they're right. And it's the same reason I'd rather use starbursts for fracs than relabel something as a pretend frac.
Believe me, I understand that my thought process here is a little twisted. But I'm just being honest - I don't see the appeal of copies.

Appreciate your honesty, just using it as a thought process for myself! I was going to bring up the painting thing before you mentioned it, damn lol :)

The 2nd reason can be childish, playing pretend, but Id make a 3rd reason: I like the colors and designs. I have no interest in defrauding anyone or pretending, but my players have heard of the Bellagio/Aria/whatever and it puts a smile on their face to play with those chips. My point is the 3rd reason to have them: simply to play with and enjoy them. None of my enjoyment comes from provenance or realness, personally, and I think others think similarly.

Super fair opinion though, just sharing how I look at the hobby. For me, poker and hosting poker is the hobby, not the collector's side of this thing of ours.

Edit: and to add my players have never seen a chip thats not a dice chip, so we got REAL low bars over here lol, I will not have to convince them of ANYTHING. Ill tell them the dealer button comes from Mars and they'd shrug and ask if my wife made the cheese dip again.
