Hi,

Yesterday I was looking at a video on YouTube where a guy reviewed the Dunes China Clay.

At some point in the video he just broke a chip in 2 just with his hands. He said that he could not do this with ceramic for instance. On another of his video, he tried with a Paulson Classic without success.

Hence my topic. Are those China Clay chips the most fragile on the market ?

Are some China Clay more durable or solid than others ? Maybe the Dunes (and also the Milano as I read) are less durable than other series like CPS or Majestics ?

I'd be very glad to get some input on this.

Kid.

I haven't used all of these chips that you mentioned but I do have a lot of Majestics (from a recent purchase) and they seem to be pretty durable. Only 1 out of 1500 was shipped to me broken but other than that, I've had several poker nights with lots of splashing, and I haven't seen any damage on any of them so far. I haven't really tried to break one on purpose.

Some China Clays, especially the older ones I have, I have noticed are much more of snap-in-half, "Chips Ahoy" crumbly, than more recent "rubber/plastic" feel Chinas..
ASM/CPC, Paulson are much harder to break in your hand, & the ceramic and slippery plastics/slugged types are essentially impossible to break ...

Also... Here's a post I made from almost 2 yrs ago with more durability info ...:

Depends what you mean by "" to be honest.

China Clays might be weaker and more prone to snapping, but ceramics are more prone to chipping.

Flea bites on CC's aren't really noticeable. Flea bites on ceramics equals glaring white blank bits.

Ha! Yes, if you want a list of the easiest chips to break in half in your hands China clays would be on that list. I have two sets of China clays and none have broken from normal use.

I played the Milanos on my craps table for almost two years, no breakages. My CPS set has seen a lot of play/travel and none have broken. Here is an impromptu list (subject to change)

Scale of 1-10 resistant to breakage (10 means near impossible to break in half)

China Clays -- 6
CPC 7
BudJones ----- 8
Paulson 8
Metal slugged - 9
Ceramics 10

Obviously, if you leave certain chips in the sun for three years, they'll crumble. This is for new chips.

Don't know if that's of any value, but those are my thoughts.

By the way, thanks for watching!

My Milanos are pretty well used (bought here), drops on a concrete floor has broken a couple but nothing from ordinary use or drops on wood flooring or carpet, and even most concrete drops do nothing. I just have a policy that if you drop a chip and it breaks you owe me face value of the chip, encourages people to be careful.

I find my older China clays are flaking badly which leaves an annoying pile of chip crumbs on the table after using them.

They arent that fragile but they are the most fragile of the chips on the market yes.
My guys throw chips around on the craps table and there is some chipping that occurs. Mostly on the lighter colors. I have yet to have one break however.

This got me curious so I grabbed one of my Dunes $25 extras and the thing snapped like peanut brittle when I tried to break it.

With that being said I own three different china clay sets that have seen a decent amount of play and I have never had a chip break on me ever.

I hear taps playing.....

May God smite thee...

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
And indeed yes, I was watching hobbyphillic. ;-)

My question was more about the possible difference amongst the China Clay series in the market. For instance how Majestics compare to Milano, ... in terms of durability.

Either of those two hold up very well to all kinds of damage. The earlier the China clay the softer the material. Cc's from Palm Gaming offer a much more paulson like feel than any newer style like majestic, CPS, Milano or dunes chips which are more akin to plastic in feel and sound.

I just bought a few of these I think this is what you were talking about when you say crumbly. A couple of chips at the end of the sealed pack crumbled as I unwrapped them

After posting that I've only had chips (older Milanos) break when dropped on the floor, on Saturday I had one break when tossed into the pot (we use a velvet lined dice tray to make it easy to collect and award pots). I didn't charge the player since it is normal for us to toss chips.

I have Majestics, Terribles, had HS Cleveland and thus far I like the way the Majestics are wearing. The HS Clevelands were used obviously, but they were clean as casino chips go. Still, I just didn't care for the normal worn look they had - subjective. Some of the Terribles have flea bites and the pinks seem to attract dirt. Not a huge deal, but I'm more of a "maintenance-free" kinda guy - well at least that's what I have time for now. Oiling all of my Majestics is about as much time as I care to spend with chips :D

As far as a chip breaking, I was going to say, "who cares? I don't have any players trying to snap a chip in half." Then I read @BadChile post above. If one of my players tossed a chip on to the table and the chip broke, I would cash everyone out, vacuum the table, and bring in a new set of chips. OCD much! I can't believe that could happen!!

Yeah I mean as far as durability is concerned I just expect my CC to work as chips and not break. They don't need to be especially strong or whatnot. They should also be able to sustain a drop onto carpet...which they can. I already broke one by stepping on it but that is to be expected IMO.

I have had the Championship Poker Series (CPS) for a little over a year now, they are played once a month for about 5-6 hours, I haven't had any breakage.

Have you ever been able to compare them to Majestics? They seem to be similar, but are more costly. Still, I might be interested in trying them out anyway.

I'm with your subjection 100% there. Casino worn RHC mold Paulsons are not at all awesome to me. I didn't care for my Cleveland Horseshoe $5's and $25's much at all. But I'm still using Terribles $1's in my mixed cash set - those are near mint, and I like them just fine. I suppose if they were fleabitten, I might feel differently about it.

I just ordered 1400 of the type above and not one was broken. I even threw some on a tile floor and nothing broke. I didn't by this color though. The blue $1 and tri color red are plenty durable it seems.

Also thank you for the examples everyone I have bought more chips for replacements and I will by more labels too. I really do like the feel of the clay chips.

I bought 600+ of the spirit molds, most of them with the 2-color edgespots, but I also got 150 gray solids. The grays were not broken or crumbly in the package, but are pretty easily snapped with a couple fingers. All the tri-color chips seem really solid.

Thank you for that, That is good to know. I bought 300 of the gray's as my nickel in my cash games. Also used the two tone green for quarters.
