Hello fellow degenerates , this is my first post here fairly new to the chip world just snagged a 750 ct China clay Dunes set from Apache. They are alright , if the texturing was consistent I would like them more. At first I thought maybe I had been cheated and some of them were made out of a cheaper material than the others, some of them feel different than others. The 25 cent vs the 1$ for example feel like they are made of completely different material. The edges are cut different on some , now that im doing more digging it seems that is just par for the course. With that being said how would you guys compare China clays to a Paulson Majestic set if they were heavily used, some would say Tires? If it was around the same price the Paulsons being a little more , wondering would people choose brand new china clay set or a heavy use Paulson?

(continued) They dont shuffle near as good as Paulsons im guessing its because the way the edges are cut and inconsistent in general. I play at the Harrahs in Cherokee NC and as far as casino chips go they are pretty old/dirty. But I would take them over these China clays any day of the week. So I might have just answered my own question. Just dont know if their is a point of use with Paulsons that become beyond just "used" and are unplayable.

Can't speak for everyone but you would be hard pressed to find people on this site that would choose new China clays like the Dunes or Majestics over any compression clay chip like a Paulson chip or cpc chip, they are just not in the same category. People buy China clays because they are much less expensive and readily available. Paulson's are not commercially available to the public (outside of Chip Room sales and things of this nature) and are orders of magnitude more expensive than China clays.
Before buying you should always get samples, but used Paulson casino chips are a far superior product and the cost is reflected in that. The Chip room is a vender on this site who regularly has sales where used casino Paulson's are available( sometimes even uncirculated), you should check that out if your interested. There are other venders like SunFly, BRPro, and Broken Arrow who sell ceramic chips both traditional and hybrid that are (in my opinion) far superior to the older China Clay chips. Those Dune chips were some of the earlier iterations of China clay chips and there have been some advances in the material used. There is currently a group buy going on with Broken Arrow for the new web mold hybrid, check that out.

Feel free to ask questions on this site, plenty of people on here with a lot more knowledge than me and who offer it up freely.
Try to always get samples before you buy because they will be your chips and you need to like them regardless of what others think.
Good luck with your chipping journey!

I have a pretty low opinion of China clays. But there are some Paulsons that are worn so much that I wouldn’t want them at all. I’ve had severe bike tires that in my opinion don’t shuffle well or handle well at all - I wouldn’t pay for those. When you say the worn majestic stars shuffle better than the China clays, I take that to mean that you’re happy with the way they handle. If that’s the case then yes, it’s a no brainer, get the Paulsons.

I’ll just add that if I had to choose between China clays or Paulsons so worn that I didn’t like the way they handled, I’d probably choose to wait for something better.

Ya I would agree with upNdown here, if given the choice between the older China clays and bike tire Paulson's, like real tiers, I would probably just wait till I have the money for better chips. But that's just how I see it. They will be yours so you need to be happy.

All the super worn RHC chips I've checked out have been horrible. They felt almost like plastic. Early on I got a barrel of worn Paradice $5s and they were not good.
Ya there is a threshold where the chips go from buttery smooth, acceptable, to not great.
For me it's close or slightly north of the used Horseshoe Cincinnati 1's and 5's that were all the rage a few years back.

That’s a great point. The tires I didn’t like were leaded THCs. I’d forgotten what unleaded RHCs feel like when they get worn down - you nailed it, they feel like plastic.

The ones im referring to in specific are the majestics that Apache has right now from Gary Indiana. Not badly priced but from the pictures you can see (especially on the white 1$) that they are pretty worn. I wasn't saying those shuffled better because ive never seen them in person , I was saying that the ones at Harrahs in Cherokee NC shuffled better than my china clays. I am assuming they are Paulsons if they are a Ceasers resort location? The poker chips their are just very grimy but they dont seem to be missing material like the majestic picture. Maybe they are just dirty and need cleaned , not old. I kinda figured that would be the consensus , they are probably 500$ for 500 for a reason. (priced at 375) but after shipping and tax at apache probably more like 600. I do like the way the majestics look though , I saw a thread of some guys who were cleaning some on here. I should probably just wait for a better set to come up , thanks guys, If I sound uncultured with my chip knowledge its because I am, the addiction is in its infancy.

Ya those are cheap because they are in the "bike tire" camp.
The ones and fives are pretty bad, grab a sample of them they are like under 20 bucks a barrel, see if they are too worn for you.
I suspect they are but you may like them.

And yeah honestly some barrels of the dunes I Love and then some feel like they are made of a completely different material. You would think that sounds stupid but its not I mean some barrels I can shuffle a lot better they dont get hung up. I think from further digging that its just par for the course with the older C clays. Some of them feel like clay and some of them feel like plastic and they are to slick an slide to much its odd for sure. Thankyou for the vendor drops though thats what I was looking for because im new here, big help.

What is the least your going

What is the least amount your gonna spend on any 500 count cash set of mint condition Paulsons these days? just rough estimation. Ive come to the conclusion I dont want tires after finally realizing why they are called tires LOL. Because they look like Cheerios instead of Oreos hahaha.

I just figured a sample could be cherry picked
Nope. Apache will send you what you a sample of what you are going to get.

Bike Tires
Multiple Inlays that distract even the most oblivious
Mild Hooker Juice

Even I couldn't make myself buy them, and I have a special fondness for the trailer park.

Ive come to the conclusion I dont want tires after finally realizing why they are called tires LOL. Because they are shaped like cheerios hahaha, defiantly dont want that. Yea I wasn't insinuating that apache would be dishonest at all , but it would be hard to not pick the least visibly worn out of the set ya know? Because their defiantly has to be some (in the same set) thats visibly a lot worse than others I would assume atleast. Probably won't even bother , I want a new set of something. Just dont know what yet either Paulsons or the Card house Austin ceramics style anyone know what chips those are? I like the style of those chips a lot but ive never played with or had ceramics so idk if I would like them near as much as Paulsons so again would need to get a sample. Their isn't many ceramics that catch my eye but the Card house in Austins chips look amazing.

Regarding dead mint Paulson chips, I would t venture a guess, but I recommend checking the classifieds here on a regular basis. There some really high dollar chips; but you will also find some reasonable stuff.

Also, keep any eye on @TheChipRoom for their huge sales. Be prepared to act quickly.

Here is an example from Black Friday

Oh wow are you kidding 1$ a chip for the diamond jacks?? I would be all over that kinda deal if something popped again.

They probably are made from different materials. China clays are notorious for inconsistency from batch to batch.

I swear they are man , not per chip in same denomination but different barrels of different denoms are like completely diff material and weigh .2 of a gram difference. Some of them feel like they are made of clay some of them feel like cheap plastic, and its not my imagination because the ones I like better shuffle and just handle noticeably better , like 2 diff chips its so weird.

yeah do sets of diamond jacks come around often?
There was more than one sale that included them, so the bulk from TCR may be depleted/depleting. Nevertheless, they are out there and appear at better prices than you see on eBay from time to time.

There may be some magic to knowing what Jim will have next, but I don't know it. From what I have seen, it is a popular game to figure out where he is going and what the chips might be when he announces that he is on the road again.

The members of this forum can track him down and guess what he is going to offer faster than raccoon can tear up your campground trash.

Thanks man , yeah do sets of diamond jacks come around often? I like the colors of the diamond jacks way better than the Jumiers or I would probably just grab them. Not a huge fan of the brown a yellow ones. I do love those $25 greens though.
Think about it in common sense terms. The $5s and the $25s were blown out at a buck apiece - there’s plenty of those out there. The problem is the $1. They sold out quickly at I think a buck eighty apiece. They’re out there too, probably mostly in sets. You’ll likely have to pay a premium for them, but the lack of value in the $5s and $25s should offset that to some extent. I would you offer $2 apiece for a set of $1/5/25 and see where that goes. You might even find a set cheaper if you wait around for somebody to list some, but therein lies the rub.

Probably because they are plastic indeed by a far margin, nowadays.

Advice to our friend asking: save money, wait and buy CPCs
