Flying Spaghetti Monster CPC Mockups (1 Viewer)

Like this the best but not crazy how the 100, 500 and 1000 are the same edge spot design since you didn't keep the same design on the 25 and 5000. Imo it would look better to keep the 25 and 5000 with the same edge spot design as the other three or change two of the three edge spots on the 100, 500, 1000...

What if it went 314, 414, 314, 414, 614 ?

That'd look cool I think b/c then there'd be some structure and then you have the 5000 stand out...totally your call obviously but just throwing in my 2c in case you didn't notice that the edge spot designs were a little "off" imo...some people don't care about that.

I'd be curious to find out what your religious beliefs are. Are you a Jehovah's Witness by chance?
You assume that since Jehovah's Witnesses are NOT preachy? Don't think I follow your train of thought..
I just didn't think that atheism or religion were a great theme for a poker chip set, but respect that others think it is a good idea.

He's allowed to have an opinion on my chips without being given the 3rd degree. I appreciate his honest feedback and I don't want my thread to create any kind of conflict about belief. (this isn't the place for that).

Thank-you.

Consider using a full-size noodly on one side (love the graphic!), with a larger denomination on the reverse side. Best of both worlds in one chip.

I'd rather have a 1200 L6 and L8 set, even if I need to get 'em 600 chips at a time. Best of both worlds in one set. :)

Do you think it needs some kind of text on it? I feel that it does but don't want anything that screams Atheism.

Oh dear. I've thought of some text for the chips but, it's honestly...a little preachy, BUT, I think it's perfect because it's relevant to poker and life and doesn't scream Atheism.

Don't make fun of the font. It's not final by any means. It's called "Gallaecia" and does look rather Gaelic which is unintentional. I chose it because it's noodly, not because I am 1/4 (or 1/8) MacDonald.

Also, I'm thinking the non-text side should have the creature much smaller.

Thoughts?

I like "Question Everything", but it's kind of hard to read with that font. I don't have Photoshop with me, so I cannot do a proper mock, but I was thinking something with this sort of a layout for easier readability with your font.

I like the idea of making the font a bit more legible, but I think keeping it centered makes the design more aesthetically pleasing. Things just look better by the numbers. Also, Question Everything isn't the star of the chip, the monster is. So he has to be (literally) the center of attention. The rest of the design is built around it.

A bit clearer, however, the font is kinda boring but slightly retro. It's called Tw Cen MT. Looks like a font that would be on board game instructions from the 60s or 70s.

If you're going to go that route, I prefer 'Carbo Diem', it's less preachy than 'question everything' and it has the added benefit of alluding to fellow atheists a bit more. Although both work

When the font size is small, and moreover, when the script is curved, plain is the best way to go, because most of our reading is via pattern recognition - not by letter recognition. I like the latest rendition the best, but would not discourage delving into other fonts. Save the fancy text for font sizes that are large enough to appreciate the tiny size.

Remember, before you decide to order, print up something on your printer at the size it will be on the chip. I made many small changes to my set after seeing how poorly 1-3 pt lines show up on a 1" inlay.

Like the new edge spots (y) Something I meant to mention earlier - this may not matter to you either but I always point it out when I notice it - but you use three colors in your 100 but all other chips you use two colors...

Yes, I originally was going to use two colors on them all but I felt this looked so nice. Plus the 100 is going to be the 'workhorse' of the set so may as well splurge a bit. I feel the colors on the 100 are subtle enough to not warrant three colors on the rest. Plus I think the rest look bangin' as they are.

I updated the original post with an updated design. I like the idea of no text to keep it simple, kind of inspired by the design of the Rounders chips.

I have to disagree here -- I don't find "Question Everything" to be religiously preachy at all. It's certainly sound advice for anyone involved in science, and IMO excellent advice for kids with triple-digit IQs.

It's sound advice for anyone imo, but does it belong on a poker chip? I think I'd like to keep it simple. Most chips that aren't from a real casino look like they're from a fictional casino. There are few great looking chips that don't have a casino/poker room name on it. I felt 'Question everything' isn't casino relevant and I'd be hard pressed to think of a name of a fictional card room that would follow the same theme of skepticism. It should be difficult though since being a skeptic is what poker's all about. The chips in the OP (that have only the graphic and values) keep it simple and follow the vintage minimalist concept of the Rounders chips. I'm still unsure of the font. If I think of a good fake casino/poker rooms name, I might add the rolling text.

Most of my friends are Atheist or Agnostic and I know a few in my two home games who are, but a few who might be legit offended it they know it was calling out religion.

Regarding fake rooms, there's a balance required if I'm using a fake casino. Something subtle enough to make the average Joe and Jane think the name is purely poker related.

They say if you're trying to be creative write down all of your ideas (no matter how bad) and the good ones will rise to the top. Let's try a few.

Fake casino/card rooms:

  • Skeptic's Poker Room
  • Skeptic's Card Room
  • Sound Reason Card Room
  • Doubter's Poker Room
  • Rationalist Card Room
  • Unbeliever's Poker Club
  • Heathen's Gate Poker Club (lool)
  • Blasphemers Den
  • Blasphemers Bluff

Rationals & Royals Poker Club

As in royal flushes of course...

Love the Heathen's Gate one lol

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. I find it very preachy, and I'm also very much an atheist. I love the tag line, and pretty much live my life by the phrase "question everything". However, it is still a call to action (i.e., preachy). And it's a call to action on an atheistic themed chip set. It's not really much of a leap to read this as a set of instructions to players that they should be questioning their silly religious beliefs (and they should).

I fully support the viewpoint of questioning everything, especially religion. But if you think putting that phrase on a spaghetti monster themed chip set isn't going to spark heated religious debates at the poker table, I would challenge you to think harder.

However, maybe he wants to be preachy. Maybe he has a home game with a bunch of math & science geeks like me that would appreciate it. If so, then I say go for it. But if offending your Christian, Muslim and otherwise religious poker friends is something you wish to avoid, then I definitely wouldn't put it on there.

That said... personally, I like it :)

I aim to offend everyone equally

Oops, I should have used proper phrasing here, as I too aim to offend equally :D

But if offending your Christian, Muslim and otherwise religious intellectually challenged poker friends is something you wish to avoid, then I definitely wouldn't put it on there.

Now that's preachy. ;)

But seriously, there are plenty of intelligent religious people, just their belief in religion isn't the most intelligent one. Just like there are dumb atheists. Particularly ones that think their lack of belief should be part of broader movement to include all kinds of social justice. (looking at you Atheism+)

True. Professor John Lennox is brilliant. They just change the rules of reason when it comes to their faith. I guess it makes people sleep better at night

Here's revision 9.

Decided if I was going to use a grey 100 then I should get rid of the grey edges on the 500.

@25 and 5000 would choose the same colour for the monster as for the chips

They're really dark colors. Not sure how visible they'd be. I wanted to go with the brightest colors of each chip for the inlay, but here's what that would look like.
