Flying Spaghetti Monster CPC Mockups (1 Viewer)

Text or no text, someone is bound to ask "what is this," while looking at the design. You either sit mute, lie, or open up a can of religious discussion.

We can disagree on anything. Best looking chip, Pepsi/Coke, Apple/Android. We can even disagree who should run our country. But if we disagree about the existence of a God, well... that's taboo. Ironic too, since there is so much scientific evidence to disprove many religious stories.

Question everything won't make the chip any more preachy than a crucifix on a chip with or without "I Believe" on the chip. I like how clean the chip looks without the text, but if you are leaving it off because you don't want to offend... that ship sails as soon as one of your theist players picks up a chip to take a closer look.

I'm fine with saying it's squid monster but people in the know will know better. Even if someone spoke up and says "it's the flying spaghetti monster" I don't think most religious people would know what that is. II think the religious people who know what FSM was and were sitting at a poker table with me would be few and far between. I hear what you're saying though. Go big or go home. Don't leave out something awesome for fear of offending people. It's already offensive because of the topic alone. Hey it might just put someone on tilt. :)

What I might do is leave one side textless. Then on the other side, go for a kind of MGM Grand inspired label with the fake card room on top. Bold denom covering the bottom of the graphic and 'question everything' scrolling the bottom edge of the chip.

Kinda like this...

Text would have to be bigger, it appears.

Just to clarify, are you going for the "bad 50s sci-fi movie tentacle monster" thing?

I don't actually agree. You can just say it's a Flying Spaghetti Monster, and that it's a joke. Because it is.

It's easy to forget that FSM was not created to bash religion.

It was created to mock the idea of teaching Creationism in Science classes. In other words, it bashes the idea of teaching Religion as Science.

People wanted to make a point about Science, versus religious beliefs, but they didn't want to bash an actual religion. Rather than say the Evangelical Christians are wrong, or the Muslims, or the Hindus, or Shinto, or Buddhists or any of 700 religions are wrong... They made up a phony religion to use when making their arguments. And they made the phony religion as unreal as possible, so that it didn't even resemble any real religion. They even made it laughable.

The way the joke worked out was that they contrived the most ludicrous possible fake religion - including a god who is a flying mass of sphagetti and meatballs - and then asserting that this religion had a creation story which should be taught in Science classes. The catch here is that every argument against this is necessarily an identical argument against Creationism being taught in a Science class.

If a particular argument allows for things that are clearly nonsense - like the FSM religion - to be taught in Science classes, then that argument should not be considered a valid reason to teach Creationism in Science classes. A valid argument would be one that doesn't permit FSM to be considered.

I wasn't aware of this movement/idea. I read up a little. It is designed to convince others that teaching creationism is a bad thing to do and it does so by mocking the idea of religion and by extension the people who hold the idea. I agree that creationism is a belief and not science. I agree that it's a good idea to avoid teaching religious beliefs in public schools. I've always thought that the idea that religion and public schools shouldn't mix was a pretty easy sale, that doesn't require demeaning people from the other side. The demeaning part never buys anything as far as the outcome in the areas that flirt with this idea.

It is a misjudgment to think that people who have religious beliefs (unrelated to teaching creationism) will see the pained distinction and won't be offended. This movement IS designed to bash religion, to show religious beliefs as ridiculous. If you want to spend a lot of money creating chips to put this idea into physical form, then you should simply not care that you will offend someone, because it will.

I think Jeff is right. There will be people who will be offended by these chips. You have to ask yourself if that matters to you.

I'm an atheist with parents who believe in God. We have a good relationship because we don't mock each other's belief systems. Someone will eventually feel mocked by those chips. People in general don't like to have their core beliefs questioned.

@jbutler once argued a court case invoking the spaghetti monster defense. I only overheard a retelling. If appropriate, this would be a great place for a short thread jack to retell it here.

As someone living in the Bible belt, and someone that has discussed the FSM with true believers, I can absolutely say that the FSM is offensive to some. I wasn't even mentioning it from the standpoint of an atheist or a mocking point of view, just simply bringing it up as the courts in the area had a case involving posting the 10 commandments in a courthouse.

Obv, YMMV. I'm just saying it's a can of worms. Maybe they should be opened, maybe they shouldn't. They're Schrödinger's worms.

Like I said, "It's easy to forget that FSM was not created to bash religion."

But, to your point, the movement has certainly been taken in that direction, and it's certainly hard to tell the difference any more.

Just saw the edit - love the Noodle House Poker Room idea!

"Noodle House" is mainly a place holder. There's a Chinese food restaurant around here called Noodle House (as there is likely one near most of you), but noodles don't have any relevance to either groups I play with so if I was going to add text, it wouldn't be something else.

Updated 25 to normal green and matched the inlay. Updated 1000's edge spot to retro blue. Updated 5000 to Imp blue and matched inlay. I think I found my colors and quite possibly the final inlay. This might sound weird but green and grey aren't too close of colors are they?

The light in your poker room is the best bet for making that determination, unless you plan on travelling a lot with the chips.

I usually bring chips to our game. Lighting is great at one and a little mild at another. I wondering if Dayglo green would look out of place in the set.

Also, I have no color samples and was considering pulling the trigger on these before April 1st for CPC's price increase.

You know the motto: Always Get Samples

Awesome chips are worth a little more, and cost less than getting a second set once you learn the monitor colors don't match chip colors in real life.

I strongly suggest getting a sample set pronto. It's a small price to pay in the long run. DG Saturn looks great in the design tool but irl has a greenish tinge that I dislike. You may find similar with other colors also.

Just remember if you do get one from cpc they are not labeled but they do (use to) come in order as seen on the site.

Best I can do under normal lighting.
Green, charcoal, and gray:

Oh and get samples :D

But really what color is that chip? Looks like salmon, cpc could use a salmon.
You didn't see the announcement of the new color?

J/k it's actually supposed to be gray.

You're right I really should get samples. I was really hoping to get the order in before April 1st's price jump, but who knows? Maybe the CDN dollar will rise back to where it once was and it'll make up for the difference. I might post in classifieds but in the meantime, anyone have a sample set for sale? @CdnBeerLover

Sorry for the thread jack - every time I see these all I can think of is the Hydra symbol form Captain America.

Considering making a cash set (since 90% of our games are cash) and I could just keep my CPC set around for tourney. Since the set will be smaller I can splurge on nicer edges. What chas think?

I don't mind same spots for tourneys, but not a fan for cash sets. :)

What about this? Solid 25¢ saves you some money. And as there won't be a lot of $25s I used a higher spot.

I feel they all seem out of place due to no continuity on the edge spot type. I like the way they look with each chip edges progressing eg. 1D14, 2D14, 3D14. 4D14.

However, most casino's chips don't follow much of a progression, with a few exceptions.
