Hurricane Irma is a monster. One of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever seen. Winds are 185 sustained with gusts over 220.

OK, to be sure it is a long ways off. A Florida landfall would be Sunday. We all know about false alarms - storm prediction is not all that accurate 5+ days out.

This being said, basic preparations seem prudent even now. Think through what would make you evacuate and prepare plans. Clean up your property. Gather basic supplies. Fill up your gas tanks. If you are a storm veteran, then you know what to do. Thing is, you shouldn't wait until you are "sure" - the time for basic preparations in NOW.

Well, I saw no one was talking about it in general, so I made a post as a reminder. Looks like I was typing it as you were posting! I posted a link to your insurance discussion from last year as well. This is gonna be a rough one wherever it lands...

I was planning to head back to Florida next month.
I hope its still there.

You can still have a good vacation!

I looked at the NOAA storm surge models for Savanna and Charleston this evening and thought I would add to earlier remarks. Please do not take comfort in "modest" storm surges in Florida should you live north of the state but still on the Atlantic coast.

The storm surge in South Carolina could be as much as 25 feet deep or as little as 10 feet. The tidal range is something like three feet. The waves could add another five+ feet the closer you are to the ocean. Beach front housing might be swept out to sea, but is certain to be inundated. Even a large hotel could be at risk. Also, the surge is going to run miles inland. Anything less than 20 feet above sea level is at great risk even if the ocean is miles away. You might not feel like you have ocean front property sitting two dozen miles from the ocean, yet you could still be at great risk.

Lastly, your vehicles in the streets are likely several feet lower than your house/office/apartment. It takes only a few feet of street flooding to destroy your car. Even if you ride out the storm "safely" you could have a total loss on the car.

Please respect the value of your life. It isn't worth the risk to stay if you reside in the surge zone -=- DrStrange

Family has evacuated to Alabama. Now I wait.
Haven't been around the news, just saw she changed her travel plans to the west coast? You're getting the fuck outta there yeah?

let's presume this is intended for Larry....sure! if he has an 18 wheeler handy. :p

Yeah, that's about it. If I picked my, say, ten favorite sets, my car would be full. It's not easy to pick the "best"...

I guess I could pack a few more by leaving my wife at home, but that might be -ev overall.

Maybe @k9dr snapped a pic of his sets being evacuated in the Escape?

My sets are boxed up and on top shelves in an interior closet. If I end up evacuating, they will come with me.

I could always help by taking a barrel off your hands.... :sneaky:(y)

The ground is saturated from all the rain we have had so they just pulled up from the roots. I have a few more worrisome trees close to the front of the house.
