My new place has an old school "dungeon-y" basement where I am storing the majority of my poker chips. It has brick walls, an old poured concrete floor, exposed wood rafters, dirt crawlspace nearby, etc. You know, something out of a Friday the 13th movie...

(this isn't actually my basement, but gives you an idea of what I'm dealing with)

While all of my chips are well secured in fully enclosed cases or birdcages, I couldn't help but wonder... do mice chew on and/or destroy poker chips if they are left out? They seem to nibble on just about everything, so I'm just curious if anyone has ever run into mice bites on their "clay precious."

Rats will eat almost anything, including birdcages. Chips with a chicken wing or potato chip odor stored in "their" environment will almost certainly attract unwanted attention.

I'd suggest getting a gun safe, or store them upstairs. And get a cat.

I had a rat living in my van (Toyota Sienna) engine for a while. Only way we realized he was there is the van wouldn't start....the rat had chewed through some of the components.

So yeah rats will literally eat plastic or anything its crazy.

Separate story...

We had a more recent rat issue outside in my lawnmower shed. My wife is earthy and didn't want to use rat poison. She read online from her hippie friends than grating irish spring soap would keep them away. So we grated a few bars of soap all over the shed. Next time I go out there...rat droppings everywhere and sure enough all the soap is gone....they literally ate a grated bar of soap... ew.

I am partly horrified and partly mystified when it comes to rats. They are hardy bastards.

I was going to say the same thing is BG. Snacks are definitely an attractant. I have replaced wiring in people's attics and basements that mice have chewed and they only chewed in random places. There could be multiple cables next to each other and one cable will be eaten in 3 or 4 places and other cables will not be touched. I almost wonder if the installer had eaten before putting in the wire and there was the scent of food on certain sections.

I'd be worried about temp change and humidity down there .... not sure how the chips will handle that over a long period of time

Technically, mice probably won't eat the chips. Mice teeth grow in perpetuity. They need to gnaw on fairly hard stuff to sharpen and knock down their choppers. Wood, drywall, cable sheathing, you name it.

That said, chips probably need to be kept safe from the bastards.

...and Irish Spring won't keep the mice away. Soap does keep the hippies away though... :coffee:

RATS!! One of my favorite topics. I like to consider myself the neighborhood rat slayer! I hate those damn things. I snap-trapped two just last night! Satisfaction!

Get some traps, but regardless of rats, I think I would store those chips upstairs, as MaxB suggested, for more consistent temperature.

Don't get me confused with MatB ...I'm the better player (and more handsome with the ladies) (y)

I say leave out some bait chips and set up a night-vision mouse cam.

Because your 'To Do' list probably isn't long enough, already.

Congrats on the new digs.

Ok. Looks like I have some storage upgrading to do. Thanks for the tips!!!

" Ms. Smith is teaching her 1st grade class. She is asking her class for a word for each individual letter of the Alphabet.
" A ? "
Little Jimmy's hand goes flying up into the air.
" Jimmy?"
"Ass" , says Jimmy.
Ms Smith says "Oh my goodness, don't say something like that!, "OK", says Little Jimmy.
" Anyway, now how about a word for "B"
Again Jimmy's hand goes up & she picks him.
" Bitch.".. She again yells at him, & he promises he will be good.
" A word for "C" ?
Jimmy's hand is the only one up, & she reluctantly calls on him again.
"c*nt". he says. She again blushes, scolds him, & he swears he will be OK.
She calls for a word for "D", & Jimmy is raising his hand. She thinks about it, & says to herself, "Not for this letter", & picks another kid...
For the letter " F" , Little Jimmy's hand is waving wildly in the air. She avoids Jimmy & picks another kid.. She thinks about the next letters, & picks on others, despite Jimmy's frantic hand waving.
When she gets to the letter " R " Jimmy's hand is of course up.
Ms. Smith thinks, .. Hmm.. No way he can do any harm with "R", So she calls on Little Jimmy.
Jimmy replies; " Rats. .. Big, Fuckin' Rats."

I may start baiting all my mouse traps with dice chips now. While mouse traps are a necessary evil when you live in the country, they are disheartening at best when city-folk visit and think you have a rat problem. Dropping a chip in there may just create the humor I'm known for, and essentially camoflauge the real purpose of the trap.

Rats can hold their breath for 15 minutes at a time, and tread water for up to 3 days. They are mean, mean, mean. Better start trapping ASAP. If the dice chips don't work, I recommend crumbling china clays for bait.
