What is the purpose of the more durable cut cards I see sold / in use.

I’ve always used the extra cards which come with a new deck (branded text or Joker) to act as the cut card and bottom card. Do others do this as well?

Even a cheap cut card that comes with some playing cards is better than an extra card. At a bare minimum, you want a different texture so it's obvious a cut card. The thicker ones you see sold here are more obvious, tactilely and/or visually

As it hasn't been mentioned, and because not everyone knows, the "cut card" acts as the "postillion" in poker. (The postillion covers the bottom card when dealing takes place).

You definitely want a different color card. Make sure it's the right size poker/bridge.
Buy a 5 pack or whatever on Amazon or eBay. Get the cheapest ones, they don't need to be fancy, and you don't want something thick/rigid

One of the vendors is selling aluminum cut "cards", and that strikes me as being desperately unusable due to the rigidity. But people who've bought them seem to like them, so I don't know.
I dunno, definitely wouldn't be my first choice.
I mean they make some REALLY cool decks of cards with amazing graphics now. Beautiful to look at, but would be brutal to play with (especially 7cs).
That said if it appeals to you, buy one. Maybe you'll like it?

I was sceptical at first tbh but @Potsie1 ‘s aluminium cut cards are the nuts!

Don’t knock them until you try it. Sure you could get a 5-pack of Amazon plastic cards for a few bucks but you can also get a 500 piece dice chipset for your game too.
The chances of me trying an aluminum cut card has gone up significantly. Still low, but a lot higher than it used to be. :)

I was a dealer in a casino, so I've possibly dealt more cards than most users here.

I got 8 of the aluminum cut cards from @Potsie1 , and was also a bit nervous when I first received them (not because of the looks, they're awesome!) , but because they are a bit thicker and more rigid than what I was used to.

I've since dealt several hours using them. I've also loaned them to T_Chan to use, and his comment to me kind of sums up my experience. "They weren't noticeable."

Meaning that in play, they were no different than using any other cut card. Which is kind of a strange compliment to give, but it really is meant as a compliment.

Im gonna go straight to the out of context thread for this one, but I do want something thick/rigid.

Just picked up some of the aluminum cut cards made by @Potsie1. Super happy with the design and functionality. If you're on the fence I recommend checking them out!
