I gifted at least one of my own $5s that I coveted more than any of my other chips to Lou for that set.

That said… blink twice if you’re saying this because Lou has you at knifepoint right now

Edit: I will agree his probably is the best buffet in town for sure

My rat rod set is long gone. It was a really fun project. In some ways largely an excuse to see basically be a singles collector but pretend to still focus on being a sets collector. It bridges the gap

It’s fun in play. I imagine most everyone who has spent a lot of money here knows the anxiety when you get a new set about how much your players will notice and validate the time/money/effort that went into the set. RR had instant cool factor with every player who played with it.

The colors are tough though if you want them to be consistent and easily playable and my god can the RR game get expensive fast.

I don’t think this is controversial but it is a strong opinion: any large amounts of duplicate chips in the set invalidate it as a RR set and instantly move the set a good ways down the lameness track.

The point is a ton of singles. FDL started the whole thing and had (by definition as the creator) a real RR set. Lou’s set was great cause he spent the big big bucks to go Cali colors. But I always disliked that he had custom restamped chips in the mix. But it’s basically impossible to make his colors playable for his stakes without doing something. Mine was pure for the longest time, but I really wanted to flesh out racks and started to include house molds. I got close to every single pure white Paulson $1 know to exit. Less than a dozen off. Maybe closer, I don’t remember. In the end not being able to RR the fracs really frustrated me. I liked my solution with custom gear labels to make a mix of chips but there was some goofiness cause I culled chips between designing and receiving my labels and not all the fracs matched chips in the set. In the end I spent too long worrying about decision making with the RR set. There was a lot of friction to it, even if it was fun to play around with when running cold. Also fun when a particular chip would stand out in a game and become a “chase chip” that folks wanted to win in pots. Also hard to rack up and know you hadn’t lost chips and that was terrifying with some being so expensive.

Other RR sets out there too. In various degrees of “purity.” None of us ever came close to FDL, his was the purest and I think it really shows. Cool variation and getting to see all the different chips while not compromising on chip quality or colors.

All the rat rods that are some random mix of racks that someone is “slowly subbing out” or whatever don’t do it for me.

And yes, skittles sets are entirely different

There’s been some good ones. Irish’s skittles set was by far my favorite of them.

I have always wanted to run a $.75/$1.50 beginner limit table where everyone buys in for $50 and you pick a color and get 2 racks of quarters

I have always planned to make a $5 and $20 plaque and call the set “Washington Round Up” with a lasso around a quarter.

Sadly instead I mostly just hogged up most of the quarters and they are yet to have any use. Nobody wants to play low stakes limit… even $1/$2 can be boring. Seemed like an awesome idea at the time and still hopeful to make it happen, maybe for a family game since I have what $7 or $8k tied up in quarters! lol

My group loves low stakes limit. Sell this to me.

I did something similar to this when my game first got started, but my crew hated limit, so away it went. Fun idea for sure.

If you ever want to get this in play, I'm fairly sure there'd be enough interest from the Jersey contingent. C'mon up!

We might have to get @Machine in on this. I need to figure out what games would be statistically profitable to cap preflop 5-6 handed...LOL!

that one new guy
Me? 👋

Maybe @cm1204? Don’t forget his excellent and very playable execution of rat rods solids (his pic):

Rat rod is a great way to get non chippers looking at chips. It’s a great way to get singles back in action instead of in a case. Make chips chips again.

To be clear my rat rods are always an alt / secondary to use as the smallest chip in the game. If the biggest blind (bb or straddle) is the 2nd smallest denom in the game, after one open raise / pot there’s usually only a few ratty chips in the pot. It’s manageable.

I do agree that a full rat rod set can lead to misclicks and dealer mistakes unless you’re very strict with set inclusion.

I’ve set starting stacks without a small chip and asked players what their favorite Las Vegas casino was and gave them those chips. It was a hit.

Best,

Why pay the high prices for coke when fentanyl is so much cheaper and is enough for the average junkie

Maybe that’s why I like it! :ROFLMAO:

I think there was at least one older one that kinda worked well.

Yeah. That looks…great! Everyone likes it. Super great use of…colors and…stuff. Very progressive.

It’s probably the most enjoyable set I’ve ever played. From a chipping perspective, there is nothing comparable. Instead of inane conversation about game strategy, sports, politics, and other douchbaggery…you talk about the origin of the chips, history of the card rooms, spot patterns, and other chip related nuance.

That’s all.

You guys talk game strategy, sports, and politics. But it gets better when you move to chatting card rooms and spot patterns.
