Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (11 Viewers)

@Machine what’s your opinion on this one?

I have both a 20 and a 25, depending on the set. If I really get into it, I like a 25 for a raked game or 1/2/5 plus games

It’s tough to give out favors and not get them back. It also links to the conversation that’s been had many times about people who take advantage of new members to move chips above “market value.” Not everyone is nice and not everyone who is nice is going to be nice to you.

Joe isn’t going to care that you gave Todd a discount and just because you hear he treats friends well doesn’t mean you’re going to get that same treatment.

I try to be generally pretty easy and friendly to transact with… and ya, I’ve been hurt when some (inc. active long time) members haven’t done the same but I can’t do anything about it. But if you operate within a constrained chipping budget and feel you got fucked on a deal then you can feel inclined to make back some of that loss on the next one.
I don't think it's as nefarious as you're seeming to imply.

Collectibles are very susceptible to inflation when market conditions are what they've been for the past handful of years. I see your account was created in '21... so I don't know what your experience was like before the recent times but I can promise you it wasn't always like this. You didn't usually see racks of bicycle tires going for $400 in the classifieds. $2k for a set of 6-700 casino worn chips wasn't common unless they were something special or highly sought after. A buck-a-chip or less was pretty standard.

There’s certainly an in-crowd where transacting can probably be relied upon to be sunshine and roses. And many in that crowd are very active so it can look like it happens that way a lot. I don’t think it does.

That hasn't been my experience. I think people have been mostly forthcoming and above board with their transactions. Negative experiences seem pretty rare, and I've never encountered a bad actor in what's easily been 100+ deals on here.

TheChipRoom sales becoming far less of a deal, so much so that people struggle to sell at original TCR pricing, plus it becomes extremely apparent that TCR is helping specific people with all the best/mint chips before releasing to the public. Sure kills any anti flipper and community first sentiments surrounding those amazing sales.
This is one of the unusual aspects of chipping. Most collectables are bought, stored safely, and eventually sold. The sale price may be more or less depending on the economy, but generally is sold for more as inflation increases and the collectable remains rare (and may be even more rare)

But chips aren't (usually) bought to be stored. We use them. Mint chips get flea bites. Worn chips get closer to "bike tire" status. NAGBs were once rare, but now there are enough of them that the classifieds could be subdivided and NAGBs could hold their own category making NAGB chips more common than rare.

Yet here we are thinking that you should be able to turn a profit on the regular. It's insane!

More members from all walks of life, including "whales". I have no ill will towards those folks, it's awesome! They come in and want what they want now, and the only thing that can do that is $. The downside is the whales that are happy to far and away overpay compared to market value, and then expect the majority of that $ back, bumping their overpriced threads for weeks, months, etc.

People pay what they want. The only chips I've bought in recent years have been below market value. Chips I've sold have been at the same price (when adjusted for inflation) that I bought them for. Sure, the whales turned the community on it's ear, but nobody else had to buy for whale prices.

In the end, the community grew. Meetups are so common, dates clash with one another. More people = more "bad" elements. But chipping is fun, as is poker and meetups, so hurray for more people! In a small town, you can leave your car unlocked, as you can trust everyone. In a big city, you lock and set the alarm. It doesn't mean that the friendly people and the "OG pricing" is gone. You just have to build those relationships - slowly. But the "community" is still here, and good prices still exist.

Five years is a long time to carry a grudge against someone. Especially on the Internet. Hell, I’ve been here forever and simply cannot remember what went on but can everyone just leave this in their past? I know it’s always been better once I truly forgave an incident that didn’t go my way even though it’s hard to let go. Try it, it’s very freeing, and adult. This opinion is for all involved, and no one in particular.
^ I like this! I forgive, forget and then place them on my ignore list. It works every time.

The ignore list is awesome. No grudges, just ignore. Nobody lives rent-free in this head. I cant remember how most the people got onto my ignore list, but I'm sure they earned it! :ROFLMAO:

I just wish they completely vanished from the feed. One still sees whenever someone quotes a post from a member on ignore for instance, which may trigger a click on the horrible ”show ignored content” option, for thread context.

I’d have to disagree with you on this @Poker Zombie. In the entire time I’ve been on the forum (about 9 years or so) I’ve never put a single person on ignore.
It’s my belief that someone would definitely be living “rent free” somewhere if I felt the need to actually make it a point to ignore them.

Nope, not even that chatterbox @BarrieJ3 or even @Tommy when he sends me PMs about some of my posts, neither of them are on any ignore list from me. ;)
I think a little sarcasm and good humor is excellent for the soul. Why would anyone want to ignore that?

Also at least one tourney set
Gross.

But I think you might be in the majority, not the controversial. Every local chipper I know doesn’t play tourney but has a tourney set. Samesies for a lot of limit sets.

But even as someone who no longer has a tournament set, I agree with your concept. It took me years to drop from 1 to 0 tourney sets, and even that was difficult for me. But once I did, there was no looking back.

If you cannot do your math, get your read, and make a decision in 60 seconds or less when the action is on you, your hand should be folded automatically. It's not just Kassouf, way too many of players stall as a matter of course. I don't even care if it is a "big" decision, all-in, final table, final two, whatever.

Play the f'n game and stop screwing around.

I like the drama and suspense up to a point. Maybe like 3 minutes max

May have a bunch of people abuse that. Save up your time then stretch out at end of level.
Those same people will abuse time banks, or the current system in use. Truth is, in MTT with money-jumps there will always be abuse.

Perhaps a pay structure that freezes the jumps until players have completed an orbit, then is recalculated by number of players remaining - but that feels like a nightmare.

I like the chess clock concept. X minutes for the level. Spend it or waste it as you like, but once it's gone you are folded until the next level.
Chess/shot clock or time cards/chips, but not a fan of killing live hands for any reason beyond standard rules.

I've had good results using time chips, combined with subsequent forced sit-outs when using more than the free time available. Works with a shot clock, too.

5-minute sit-out penalty for every 30-seconds used beyond any available time clock / cards / chips (rounded up), and effective immediately after the current hand finishes. No hands ever ruled dead for time usage.

Take as frickin' long as you like. Tank for 5 more minutes after the 60-second shot clock expires? Fine, see ya after your 50-minute penalty ends.

Send this stuff to Dnegs, because like it or not, he has a ton of influence on WSOP, and he’s struggling with these issues.

To your point, I saw Ivey get a hand killed in the WSOP this year because there was an automatic pre-flop shot clock and he was out of time banks. He thought the rule said that he got more time, if there was action before him. And the guy next to him said yeah, that’s what the floor told us yesterday, but then they told us later that they’d gotten it wrong.
That’s rough.

What happened to the good old days where you figure out a price for your chips and list them for sale… I don’t even give a shit if they are over priced like that idot trying to sell classics for a fortune that never moves…

Seems like every other post now is a damn auction. You know what you paid, do some research and list the damn things! If it’s super rare I understand and believe that is exactly what auctions are for… but regular old damn chips we see listed all the time?

Another thing… if you are going to do an auction start it at $1… not 99% of the value and hope you can squeeze an extra nickel out of someone! It’s not 2020 any more, the market is saturated! Awesome chips at amazing prices just sitting and getting bumped over and over… this is DEFINITELY not the time to try and get max value! Value them appropriately and let the market decide if you are In the right ball park!

Literally my internal monologue lately

I know I’ve seen this one before, I was reluctant to agree but now I’m a believer. You should divert you attention away from chip purchases until you have a nice table and chairs. Debuted my new table last night, all agreed they would play with dice chips as long as the table and gasser chairs were there.

Yes! Table more important than chips! Especially a stunning table like this one. Well done!

The over-editing of pics needs to stop. Boosting the saturation or whatever else may look good to your eyes if your eyes are a bit off, but come on. It looks silly; let the chips and lighting do the talking. The Windwalker Pron thread drawing to a halt should've been the end of it. If you want to improve quality just upload w/ Imgur. Happy to help anyone w/ that via PM (if they promise to stop the aforementioned).
