Condado Beach Tribute Set - The Pier Five Hotel and Casino (1 Viewer)

Black lettering and the black and white light house I think looks best. I do like the black and red lighthouse but I think simplicity carries this inlay with the 818 spots. Maybe make the lettering a little heavier too

Does anyone know if there is a way to do this in Photoshop (CS4)? Other than toggling bold on/off, I wasn't sure how to do it (and making it bold didn't look right).

I've been told that you can do it in Illustrator, which I don't have (but might download the 30-day trial just for this project).

You can add a stroke using the blending options.

Right click your text on the layers panel, select blending options (should be at the top), then select stroke. Change the stroke color to match your text. Let me know if you need more help

Thanks! I'll give it a try when I get home tonight.

I've mostly used PS and Lightroom for photography, so I'm not too familiar with how to manipulate text well.

Got it, thanks! I had to put the red denomination in a separate layer (which perhaps I should have done anyway).

Here's the latest revision with the following changes
  • slightly thicker font
  • size of the "$" reduced and aligned with top of denomination
  • added a "parchment" background.

Man... I like 'em a LOT... The set will just awesome!

I like the black pier a little better than the red but they both work great...

I'm leaning that way now too. I think without putting them on the chips it's a toss up, but on the chips I think the black just works a little better.

Ok, two more ideas to run by the group, then I'll call it quits on this iteration of the design.

1) What do you think of "Hotel & Casino" vs "Poker Room" for these chips?
2) What do you think about a more ornate separation line in the center of the chip? (either the one below, or something similar)

I originally thought a fancier divider line might be nice, but didn't mention it (since you wanted to stay somewhat true to the inspirational chips). Personally, I like the ornate line you just posted a lot - not too much, not too little.

Also like both the black and the red lighthouses, with a slight preference for the red - I think it balances the inlay. (And now agree, the more solid black/red lighthouse is just too much for this simpler inlay design). Your best test may be to print and cut out test labels, temp-place them on the chips, and view 'em on the felt at real-time distances.

Lastly, regarding the name.... I think I'd ask the wife's opinion before deciding on that one, since this set design is special to both of you. And I'll bet she picks "Hotel & Casino". Classy.

I have to credit @softchewy on that one. He suggested that particular separation line, and I have to agree that it's not to much, not too little.

I might end up having @Gear print up a few of each type, along with the shaped Aruba Palm Beach labels I am planning to order from him (that we talked about in the other thread). That way I'll get to see what they look like printed on non-laminated matte vinyl, on the chips, and also see how the new background works out. Obviously I'm trying to make sure I get it right before buying 2400-3000 labels, even if it takes one extra round of samples :)

Actually, I proposed the change because after I showed her the mockup, her first reaction was "why does it say "hotel and casino" and not "poker room"? Granted, you should take her opinion with a grain of salt as just a few minutes before that she said "I just don't understand how people can be so obsessed with chips. They're just chips".

Here's the lineup, with "Poker Room" and the more ornate separation line.

This is likely the last update on the mockups until early next week as I'm flying out first thing in the morning for a 3-day poker weekend in Maryland. Gotta generate a little extra income to pay for all these new chips and labels :D

Looking good. I like the black lighthouse, black text, red denom mockup.

It's been years but I've been to that place. I think it was a gift shop when I was there. The wife and I may take a road trip to the inner harbor at the end of the month.

I assume you'll have time to at least check out the Horseshoe on the east side of the harbor while you're there :)

Here's the latest mockup. Hoping to get these "finalized" so I can send them over to @Gear later today.

I switched back to the more simple line separator. I was going back and forth, and while I really did like the more ornate line, I think simplicity of the straight line won me over in the end. Also, I changed the name back to "Hotel and Casino". Not real reason other than I thought it sounded better (plus, it actually is the hotel we stayed at for our wedding). Other than that, the only other major change I made was the denomination font. I was looking for something a little less angular that went better with the text font. Let me know what you guys think about that and the other changes. I think either (or any combination of the two) would work, so I suppose at this point it's just personal preference.

So after revisiting the above post, I'm not so crazy about the changes I made on the last revision.

I just messed around with some gradients on the edges. Any thoughts on these? (each one has a slightly different gradient (in terms of size and intensity).

Also gave the denomination a little "depth", not sure if I'm going to far and should just stop before I overdo it. Just want them to have a finished look, it that makes sense.

I like the idea of the gradient a lot, but for some reason the new highlighted denomination isn't driving me crazy. I think it's just because the design is so simple, but the denomination looks way more complex. However, I think these look stellar:

818s FTW!

Did you mean the highlighted denominations are or aren't driving you crazy? I only did the highlighted dimensions to see what they'd look like with the gradients as it gave it a "3D" look and I was curious how they'd come out. That said, this design doesn't really cry out for a 3D look, so perhaps sticking with a flat denomination is best.

As for the denomination font choice, I think I got so used to the original one I used, that when I replaced it with the above, it initially seemed out of place. But if I were starting from scratch, I can see how this new denomination font in the above image probably compliments the other font and overall design better.

How about the ornate vs straight divider line? Any thoughts between those two?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I would stick with the flatter denomination, but that's just me. I think the rest of the design is so simple that the highlighted denom just doesn't really fit.

As far as the dividing line goes, I think I prefer just the straight line.

That's what I assumed you meant. You said the new highlighted denomination isn't driving you crazy, so that's why I wasn't 100% sure. But from the context of the rest of the post, I assumed you preferred the flatter denomination.

I can't seem to make up my mind on the divider line. I think it looks good either way, though the more ornate one seems to draw your eyes right to the center of the chip and might look a little busy with the fancy ampersand right below it. This may sound nit picky, but I think I prefer the straight line when I use "Hotel & Casino" and the ornate one when I use "Poker Room".

818s FTW!

Almost missed this on your previous post. I do love the 818 chips. Was originally hoping to find a black (or different color) 818 chip I could get a rack or two of in mint/near mint condition to use as a $20 (and then use the green as a quarter). The best candidate I can think of is a PCA secondary, but they're a bit hard to come by, and as it is I still want some of those for my PCA set before I'd want to relabel them.

But even without a fourth denomination, the above three work well together. I have 300/300/600 (green/gray/red), so I could probably get away with using the green as 0.25 and still use the set for 1/2 (in addition to 0.25/0.50). I'd probably want to add $20 or $100 plaques to increase the bank :)

Unh-unh. They are tropical chips, much more at home in Florida.

Next thing you're going to tell me is that I have to sell you my 1500 Aruba Palm Beach chips so they can hang out in a more tropical climate than upstate NY. :D

Somehow I've resisted them, even when Fish72 was selling his set locally.

I guess the Condados, Aruba Americanas, and Mullet Bays will have to do. For now. One set from each island that we visit.

So something like this?

^^ winner

Just the right amount of gradient. I really like the fancy line in the inlay mock-ups, but once it gets on the actual chips, I think the plain line looks better.
