Chipper Confessions (1 Viewer)

Time to make some enemies.....
  • I hate the concept of murdering and/or relabeling chips. Just never came off like true collecting to me.
  • I hate 99% of RHCs. Outside of a handful of sets (Olivia's, Aztar Tourneys, etc), hard pass. Just always came off like a money grab from GPI to design a shitty mold that won't last
  • Bearclaw spots are overrated. Give me an IHC 8V, THC 8D18/6D18/Tri-Moon and I'm good. This spot relies on heroics from specific chips that are bad ass
  • Spending $2000+ for a rack of fantasy chips that cost $100-$175 from GPI is fucking bonkers (wish I still had some so I could sell to you fiends)
  • I love old school, leaded, THC hotstamp solids....even for cash sets
  • Old school TRK >>>>> Anything else

  • Spending $2000+ for a rack of fantasy chips that cost $100-$175 from GPI is fucking bonkers (wish I still had some so I could sell to you fiends). 100% truth.
  • I love old school, leaded, THC hotstamp solids....even for cash sets. Agree on liking solid and non spotted cash sets, but when edge spots are taken out of the picture, base colors matter more than feel to me.
  • Old school TRK >>>>> Anything else Incomplete, wouldn't know. That's not a rabbit hole I'm willing to go down.
Answers in bold.

No enemy here. I agree on all except your last bullet point. For me it is old casino used chips, especially chips from Nevada.

Confession. I am not a singles, samples, or buttons collector. Yesterday I bought one lot of shitty chips on eBay for 1 specific chip, the day before I put in an order for 3 buttons, and a week or two ago I traded for a partial sample set of poultry.

I bought a lot of shitty metal-slugged chips once, just for the rack.

Then I relabeled the shit chips for use on airplanes - because if one gets lost, who cares?

...plus I get to play on airplanes.

I joined PCF looking to get me a decent budget chip set. Months passed, taste changed, budget creep happened. I ended up going with a custom CPC set. A reasonable set of 600 chips was all I really needed. So naturally I ended up ordering a 1200 piece set that supports 80 times my current stakes - you know, just in case.

True, but what if the objective is playability?
I'd counter that if the object is playability, you can get chinese ceramics in any and all denominations you want. But I get it, people want to play with Paulson clays. Obviously we all need to find whatever balance we're comfortable with. I've made no secret that I don't like relabels. But if somebody wants to relabel an entire set with their custom inlays, I'm fine with that. What gets me is when people copy a casino inlay to create chips that never existed or that they can't find. Because I can't see the point of owning a set of genuine casino chips, if they're not all genuine. Something about that just doesn't compute, to me. But that's just where MY "balance" is. To each their own, of course.

I'm currently doing exactly this and am pretty hyped for the set. They never made ones or denoms above the hundo, so other than randomly using them in different mixed set lineups, the set would otherwise not be playable besides maybe someone finding enough quantity for a small/weird T5 lineup. I definitely understand the sentiment though. Still, it's ultimately about making chips I love work into a playable set and I doubt many will cry for mass-produced live $1 Strat chips. Besides, my groups will have no idea they are not genuine unless I tell them (I will).

You aren't the only one in the camp.

20 years from now, we will see these relabels pop us as "Authentic" on eBay, scamming unknown victims out of thousands.

I don't mind relabels if they are clearly not authentic, but when you make a chip that could pass are real, you are building a malignant trap that may be sprung by an unknowing heir.

You gotta do what you gotta do - but don't expect everyone to like it.

the set would otherwise not be playable
(Please know, I’m not arguing or telling you not to do it, I’m just confessing my crazy opinions.)
I’ve seen that argument before. My response is - oh well. If I can’t make a complete set, I’d put it in a mixed set. If I can’t or won’t put it in a mixed set, I can’t use it. Makes life simpler.
And I’m going through this myself. I’ve been building a casino set, and that casino never had a frac. My home game requires a frac. My solution is to use a starburst. Somehow that’s perfect, in my twisted mind. People say “relabel the snapper” or “just use the snapper as a quarter.” Those solutions are unacceptable to me, but a starburst works. Go figure.

I mean, a chipper will or should know what they're buying or do a tad of research, especially on eBay. A non-chipper is not going to spend that kind of money on such chips in the first place. I get people simply not liking it and obviously no one should list them as authentic, but that becoming a genuine issue would shock me.

Let's just call it a new chipper with money.

You search and find that the $1s - $100s are real, as the $1000s. Chipguide shows no $500s, but the set has some. Do you trust that these are just rare? You might not know about PCF, only the Mogh, which frequently has gaps in coverage. Even more believable if the missing chip is a frac, as many of them were never made.

...and while I dont think (hope not at least) that the relabeler would call them authentic, nobody lives forever. A set gets passed down to a child that remembers dad spent a fortune on authentic chips. Without malice, the chips are listed as authentic.

...suddenly the heir becomes a suspect in mail fraud.

I have spent over $2000 on my Bud Jones coin inlay cash set... going to make custom Matsui for the 25c .

Another confession....
I love the feeling when chips are on the way to me in the mail.
Getting the chips is great, but I confess that I enjoy the anticipation of them in transit.
Kind of like Christmas when I was a kid.

I think I enjoyed the excitement and build up leading to Christmas day more than actually the day itself and opening up the gifts.

Hell, I think I'm still the same way today.

Paulsons mean nothing to me. Maybe a little harsh but if I don't have a personal connection with the chips/theme it doesn't do much for me...
