Chipper Confessions (26 Viewers)

I was going to go with stamp collecting....
god can you imagine the factions within that hobby?

-People who are just trying to buy forever stamps and wander into that community via a google link
-People who collect stamps that all have some symbol on them like a red denomination
-People who collect vintage stamps from a particular country
-People who collect books of stamps and not single stamps
-People who collect vintage stamps and then use them to mail packages somewhere

Then the seedy underbelly:
-Stamp flippers
-That one guy who convinces some stamp manufacturer that they are a country and they are getting an entirely new run of commemorative stamps
-Poppin is probably involved at some point

Dibs on the Hard Candy Mafia stamps!

I can't be the only one who sets up chips at an empty table, moves them around in some arbitrary fashion to make sure it looks like the right amount (no matter what the actual math of the situation says)? Table feel = utility.
Finally, another chipper who does this. Figured I was batshit crazy!

You are not alone. Especially when a set is being pushed beyond "optimal", I'll set up chips and sim a tournament to make sure there isn't too much change-making required, and to make sure there are few-to-no situations where the set wont stretch.

Buying more chips > turning players away, and playing with the chips > just doing the math.

Confession - the chipping part of this community just doesn't do it for me anymore. I respect the hell out of many custom sets, some casino sets, even a couple NAGB sets. However, I haven't bought or sold much of anything in a long time, and there really isn't any set that I would be pumped to obtain anymore. Having been chipping for 7+ years, my interest has ebbed and flowed, but this has been an extended down time.

I do, however, love the meetup component. Nothing better than spending a bunch of time with some good ass people

My view of chipper evolution

Nickel, dime, quarter on kitchen table
Light plastic chips
Sluggos
CCs
Ceramics
Paulson/BCC/ASM/etc
TRK
CPC Customs
Primarily meetup only

Not sure if anyone understands the feeling or has gone through a similar process.
Are you still collecting crystal ducks? Looking for a playable set....

I never understood why people create CPC chips or go through lengths such as murdering chips to relabel inlays based on old casino chips.

With the time and money spent, I'd want to be creative and create my own inlay and design thats new.

I'm not talking about buying labels to relabel a chip in a set (such as HSI fracs) but a full set based on old chips.

When people ask if I have any hobbies, I don't mention this one. It's embarrassing to me. Not sure if it is the stigma of gambling or because it leads to awkward conversations about the cost or if it's something else or a combo of these things.

I am in the same boat. Not sure why chipping feels this way.

My wife used to collect Fiesta dinnerware which has a huge following and belonged to an online group. Nobody thought that was weird.

My uncle is a huge collector of diecast Nascar models. Nobody really thinks that is weird.

Maybe because there are so few people chipping? Or the cost of the hobby?

Me too. I’ve always assumed it’s big Catholic guilt. I blame that for a lot.

You/we collect art/memorabilia. Some people collect those porcelain figurines. Whatever speaks to the collector. I collect Glenmorangie scotch and I don’t drink.

My confession: I came here to find tips on cleaning up/smoothing out the flashing on my Monte Carlo chips and told myself I was in no way going to purchase a new set of chips, much less a custom set. Well, that lasted 3 days. I'm now working with @LowerBama1714 on a customization of the Grand Casino chips for a tournament set and am ordering samples of a bunch of different chips so I can get started on a cash set. WHAT HAVE YOU GUYS DONE TO ME!!!

That's just step one of the awkwardness.

At precisely 9 am, explain to a co-worker that you are going to use 3 days vacation time and share a house with other people - that you only know from the internet - that also collect poker chips.

I have spent countless hours with my homemade chip calculator, the CPC chip designer, and scouring threads here trying to come up with the "perfect" tournament set for 3 tables despite the following:

- I hate tournaments
- I don't have 3 tables or the space for them
- I don't really want 30 people at my house
 :ROFLMAO:

This is not controversial. EVERYBODY does this

I have told my family about collecting poker chips exactly once. I ended the conversation half way through. There was no logical way to explain cleaning heavily used casino chips in an ultrasonic cleaner that didn't sound like absolute insanity.

Now, friends who don't chip? They hear me talk about it all the time if other chippers are around. You gotta have the right kind of comfort for that. :)

This is hilarious. Although I do not hate tournaments, I can check the other two boxes. I now have a spreadsheet to go over various scenarios for three tables. Likelihood of ever hosting a game with three tables? Almost zero. But you never know!!! :wtf:

As a chipper, I’m completely against the idea of relabeling chips - I feel like chips should be used as they were created. I’d much rather use roulette chips, NCVs, or even T25s as fracs if original fracs don’t exist / are cost prohibitive.

In reality, I’ve played with relabeled chips, and couldn’t really notice any difference during play.
