LOL. The whole “recognized by Asia” thing is a cute millennial thing. Distance breeds ignorance. The Boss played Asia since the 80s. Fail argument.

The Boss is The Boss. Shaq, for as good as he was, is just another NBA player. And not even remotely the best in his position.

Worldwide it’s Shaq even more that’s not even debatable lol Bruce only had a chance in the USA
This is a perfect example of myopic, recentist thinking. Same type of person who thing Lebron is the best player in the history of the NBA. Most notably because he is the player most in his face now.

That’s always cracked me up.

“Where’s all the teams from in the World Series?”

“The US and there’s a couple from Canada.”

“Riiiiiiiggghhht”
Where do all of those players come from who play on those "American" teams? All over the world. All of it. The whole world. Where do all the players come from in the EPL? From anywhere in the world who produces a player good enough.

Throw all the hate you want on our American Egos, but I'll still love listeing to y'all cuss.

Just sayin'

Shaq was a premier player, arguably best in the league for a 5-15 year stretch (95-2010?), is on the Primetime television 2-3x a week (NBA on TNT) and a dozen commercials. Also appeals to teenagers up to 70 yrs. No under 30 knows Bruce Springsteen. Shaq is also extremely active on social media.

It’s

You need to recheck the title of the OP

My point is that it’s called the World Series and only two countries have teams that participate. It’s daft to call it that.

I’m not sure what your point is about the EPL. Every country in Europe has its own competition. Being Scottish, I watch the SPL.

I don’t recall throwing hate at anyone’s ego. All I’ve said is that I hadn’t heard of a player who played a sport that I’ve never watched.

I’ve also said that the sports that are popular in the US are considered to be minority or niche in other parts of the world.

I also said that sports that are popular in the rest of the world, namely football, rugby and cricket aren’t popular in the US.

No idea why that’s offensive to you…

Basketball is widely more popular than the music genre of Springsteen (rock?), again, not even close as the poll has shown and famous lists on google lol

I wasn't offended at all. Still not offended.

I used the EPL simply as an example. They are not all from England, just as the players on American baseball teams are not all from the United States.

Regarding the name of the baseball championship, it has been called that for a long time. Just a marketing ploy from a time when the world was not so small.

I have been hearing that complaint, usually tied to a jab at American arrogance. When I was growing up, that comment was more valid than it now. Back then, Asian players were largely unable to compete due to size related to diet. The same was true with a lot of the players from Central and South America.

Today, those countries are producing players who rival or exceed the size, skill and athleticism of our home-grown players.

The World Series is just a name. Maybe it never was a true competition between the two best teams in the world, but they had to name it something.

Why Shaq? Seems like the argument is Springsteen against Shaq/Jordan/Kobe/etc.

The question is, does one of the top musicians from a specific decade/era or popularity who is still touring (looks like 30-40 shows left this year) have greater recognizability or is more popular than the most recognizable/known NBA stars?

I don’t know. But if we’re simply going on a population basis, then I’d say Shaq/Kobe/LeBron/Jordan/etc. hands down. Why? Because it’s Springsteen, not Michael Jackson or Taylor Swift.

I consume a lot of media. Not once have I seen or recognized Bruce. Or Hootie. Or whoever. I sure know exactly what Swift and MJ look like. Because they are global icons with modern day recognition across generations, whether or not people listen to them.

Add to the fact that the NBA represents one of the largest growing global fan bases, and just taking the popularity count in China alone of Shaq/Kobe/LeBron/whoever vs Springsteen, and Bruce is starting wayyyyyyyyyyyyy behind and has to catch up in a lot of other populations.

Basketball also probably #2 behind soccer
Just had a look at the numbers and basketball is third behind football and cricket, with 2.2 billion followers. According to Nielsen data, 48% of people listen to rock music.

I said what I said…

I’m all for being wrong, but we’re on page 3 and I haven’t seen an argument yet other than historical references and him playing lots of shows in Asia in the 80s.

Not sure how we’re supposed to account for Madagascar and Ireland and Portugal or know their populations. If we’re talking the US specifically, it will hands down be Shaq.

Why?

Ask the general public who don’t really know either about them. Ask who shaq played for, ask for the names of some Springsteen songs. Instant recognizability belongs to one of them much more than the other, and when I think “famous” I think recognition.

Again, reposit this as Shaq vs Taylor Swift, and then I think it’s a difficult question.

Until then, the responses for this are just subjective and anecdotal in my mind.

Cmon maaan, that’s like comparing Shaq to Travis Kelce. Yeah, if you don’t watch football you don’t know who Kelce is.

Shaq has grown well beyond his NBA career and built a huge brand that expands well beyond basketball.

He’s waaay more famous now than when he was “just another NBA” player.

I can’t name a celebrity w more commercials or endorsements than Shaq lol

This has to be a troll post that ends with Shaq being #1 in the globe

You bring up how self-centric we in the USA are, but then you yourself chose a USA avatar because well, let’s just be honest, why wouldn’t you want to…we’re the best!!!
To be fair, Mike Myers is Canadian, soooo...

I chose a fat Scottish bastard because I’m a fat Scottish bastard.

I’m pretty sure that the guy in my avatar is Canadian… :ROFLMAO:

Soo, anecdotal evidence. I asked my 12yr old son:

Q: do you know who Bruce Springsteen is?
A: No

Q: do you know who Shaq is?
A: of course

His follow-up, “who is Bruce Spring…whoever, was he a basketball player” :ROFLMAO:

When I explained the “adult” argument on Dad’s poker forum, he said “what the what, Shaq of course, that’s like comparing Messi or Ronaldo to any player on the US men’s soccer team- lol”
