I dipped my toe into the world of advantage play. A friend of a friend is showing me how to work comp systems down here in SoCal local market. He does mostly video poker and there are two good/profitable spots down here. Wondering if anyone else is profiting from a good play, and what other good plays are out there these days in general? I've been listening to BJ apprenticeship podcasts, but I'm afraid to start learning that. Even if I can figure it out, I have a serious emotional degen side to me so I don't know if I can handle the swings of BJ.

Just curious, are there actually video poker machines that you can get a true advantage on? I've hunted for some jacks or better machines with good odds, but the best I know of for that is 99.5% so you're still losing. Can you recoup it in comps?

I would assume the best angle is betting on outcomes that can't be controlled by the casino or house. Finding sportsbooks with poorly set lines and such.

Yeah, most games are 98-99%. he was showing me that some casinos give a stupid amount of comps for “big players”. A big factor is daily average. If you go to a new property and play big for one day, it looks much better than playing that same amount over weeks or months. We set up two new cards and put 100k coin in one session. so expected loss of 1k. We did two casinos down here with the best promos. One property returned 8k in comps and the other about 3k.

On a side note...There's an app for iphone called WinPoker that has most every type of video poker out there. It's not a game as much as a teaching tool. It will show you the very best moves (and their percentages) while you play a specific game. As you play, it may stop you and show you why a specific play is best. You can even modify the game to match payout structure to a certain machine you play.
For a seasoned video poker veteran, it may not show you all that much, but I found some plays surprising, especially with games different than Jacks or better.
It's $10, but could save a lot more.

Damn that's awesome. I've been to vegas with some friends/friends of friends who can drop big cash on games and end up getting awesome comps on hotels and such, but I don't have the job or budget to stomach anything like that myself. Is the idea behind getting comps just to make it effectively free entertainment (esp. if your work lines up with being there), or is there any kind of cash out potential?

Luckily these two places are with driving and so both of the will be profitable. A lot of the money is free play/gift cards so it’s pretty juicy.

I’ll check that out! Thanks for the tip

BJ suck, used to like it and counted but now I hate it a lot. Dealer has a greater advantage and there are times there’s no way you can win like you’ve got 16 and dealer has 2-card 20.

3:2 payouts kill the game, like triple zero roulette. Oughta just go play banker baccarat or pass/dont pass craps.
