About 18 months into the Hobby... 45k plus in chips... do we have a problem? (5 Viewers)

Last Christmas @Chippy McChiperson made a dream come true for me, he brought his BTP tourney set, all 43mm chips and let all of us play them!! I know this set catches a ton of hate but to me there is simply nothing better!! That same night Bill's awesome brother Rick @kirchhausen also brought the BTP cash set for everyone to play... AND Bill brought some of his limit BTP set just for me to check out!!

Yes those are the secondary $25s you have herd of, but probably never seen... in my freaking hands!! Insane!!
This was a wonderful day. Those chips are incredible in person! Definitely missing playing with our group :(

Too kind my friend! We knew this would be a hobby for us, we experienced true generosity right off the break! But new to the hobby we didn't have a lot to contribute! I hoped someday that we would be able to earn the right to have a seat and splash pots with some of the greats!! But what can 2 blue collar average joe rednecks bring to such an amazing forum ... overtime it just happens man, first off read everything!! Take notes, and learn everything you can rather specific casinos, types of chips... cleaning methods (which I get hit up about all the time) learn to speak the language. When the offer is out there to go play poker with other members... honestly none of us knew what to expect the first time... but just do do it!! Learn the crazy circus games.

One day when you build your sets and have a few extra chips someone will hit you up out of the blue... doesn't matter who they are, send those chips off and don't even think about it!!

Chipping karma is real! It will hit you back in the face when you least expect it!!

Story time*** warning! This is my thread, if you don't want to read it feel free to skip!

As dumb as it may sound, when Brie and I split our first set of BCC Mardi Gras V2 chips last year for a Christmas present to each other... we fell in love with those chips! Our friends and family's fell in love with them also... but adding on to the set is almost impossible. Doesn't matter what they cost or how they were thrown around back when they were released.. in today's time they are ghosts... tied up in private collections and not coming loose any time soon!

But our local game that we were invited to by @krafticus is the game to be in around these parts!! 36 players and a wait list to get in! Always 10 plus chippers in the card room!! Honestly every month it is the one thing you truly look forward to is Mark's game!! Also he occasionally allows guest sets to be played... there is no bigger honor in my eyes than building a set that we can all sit down as chippers and enjoy together!

Again maybe silly but I knew my goal with this set would be to felt it in one of Mark's games! But 36 players of 12/12/7/5 starting stacks and a on time bonus of 1k... it takes a monster set to cover this game!

Let me stop here and explain where this thought came from...

While all of this probably meant next to nothing for many in the room... if I died on the ride home... that would have been ok! Mark throwing scratch offs into random pots, amazing chips everywhere as far as the eyes could see!

Brie spent hours making cookies based off the BTP chips

We had our scrub donkey attire on from @JeepologyOffroad ! Stopped for a quick pic with our good buddy @Highli99

Just all around an insane night of fun for a true chip nut like me!!

This was all after Pat's game for the Turkey shoot out 2019 a few weeks before!

Freaking insane set up! One of the best dealers you will ever find @PhilLaFond and I was lucky enough to make the final table with chipping Gods @Cliff and Chippy! Just another amazing card room and true dedication to our hobby.. I knew that we are going to have to step up our gameto compete at this level!!

Around that time frame @MikesDad, our buddy Dennis also invited us to come play in the Lions Den... no pics but yet again another amazing basement set up with anything you can imagine poker wise.. tons of custom chips, custom tables, a full bar.. one of the nicest damn human beings as a host!!

Seriously amazing collections built with years of dedication to this hobby!

But our house will never be these monster places that could fit 5 tables... we could never host these monster games or meet ups you see on this forum... but we still want to be part of it!! We have come to think of our local PCF crew as family, they all invited a couple noobs into their well established game and asked absolutely nothing for it!

So the idea of bringing some new sets into the mix, something that we can contribute would be a huge honor for us. Maybe someday we will grow our game into something legit like this... who knows. But my obsession with chips doesn't go away... why build little single table sets? When we all get together it's a big freaking group, build the sets to accommodate so that if the opportunity ever does come up... we can bring something to share also!!

So back to Karma...

I knew that Mardi Gras were the one thing that nobody around here had... a BCC tourney set... something different, octagon 5ks and plaque 25ks... a different experience that many in the group haven't played with before. But how the hell am I ever going to find enough for that many people!! I thought it would take years to find... a few wanted ads for hundos with no response hundreds of chips short of my goal... it seemed this was a fools errand!

With help from @markleteenie, @pacmartine and @liftapint helping out of kindness... not looking to profit or trying to get other harder to find chips. These guys understood the importance of this set to us and helped out!! Even hurting thier sets in the process. I can't thank you guys enough!!

This one was huge for me... again maybe cheap low end chips, but they mean the world to Brie and I, to finally be playable at Mark's game... truly means the world! This is a forever set to us. Happy to play them anytime anywhere but if you wonder why so many chips! Our local amazing chipping family is quite large, if you want to get a set in play... it has to be a monster!

Moral of this long boring story... if anyone made it this far! Help others if you can! Bring samples and lots of things for people to look at and check out, draw new people to the hobby, keep your game fun with an awesome rotation. The community is only as strong as the effort you put in!! To all of our lifetime members hope to meet everyone of you someday!!

Oh and Covid... seriously go away!! All of our locals have made or bought new sets and I would like the chance to shuffle some!!
This post hits home for me. @kirchhausen ’s BTP cash chips were a game changer for me as well.

Stay safe and hopefully will see you at some point in the near future.

When you decided to go down the rabbit hole , you went ! Congrats on your collection!
Thank you very much sir, was going to comment on life long quest but trying not to draw attention. A compliment from you sir is a compliment indeed! I continue to serch for your hidden treasure and look forward to seeing you reach the finish line my friend! I intend to still be here when that day comes!

Your chippin buddy Ben

Not to make this B & B’s cleaning corner, but rather than start a thread and tag you, how do you clean the Mardi Gras v2s since the label is paper?

A lightly dampened magic eraser and small amount of dawn, just do the rolling edges and slightly fold over onto the edge of the face, making a few rotations, and wipe away with a terry cloth

In response to the question in your thread, yes you have a problem buddy ;)
I just want to know how you bankrolled all that in a year and a half. Great job

A lot of sacrifices... oh and Capitol One promised to name the new Building that is going up in tysons corner VA after me!! I call it a charitable donation! Lol

I mentioned set #5 in the OP was a BCC Garden City set... while I do consider it playable... it is still far from optimal. Needs some more $1s and a couple racks of $5s... I know there are a lot of racks of the $2s and $3s out there but all of these chips are from the BCC series! Thought it would be cool to build a second set!!

To my knowledge also they did not make a BCC $20 or $100 but did make yellow $200s... I have plenty of the $10s to cover... again she's a work in progress but I don't know of any other all BCC sets. Just thought I would share! Finally got around to a picture!

Fellow Chipper Ben

Very impressive collection.
What I like is you're both very active here, and you both equally enjoy the same hobby. That's pretty awesome.
Thank you!!
We don't always agree on things chippy wise but it always work out in the end, and we love playing poker together! Which hopefully means lots of traveling and future meet ups :)

Not as impressive, again still working on it! But the Fat Hats and other Giant chips from 47mm up to that beautiful winner club 50,000 which is a monster measuring in at just over 50mm!!

Monster poker chips are awesome... I have had the opportunity to play @Seeking Alpha Social Club oversized set that goes up to 50mm. I believe it is the only of it's kind! If you ever get that opportunity to play that set... make the damn trip to VA! They are amazing!!

Hey Ben! Great read and great pr0n, but most of all this thread is a great testament to an awesome chipper. With the guidance of veteran chippers, including you, I have learned a lot in my first three months here. At the beginning, it was pretty intimidating being here when you don’t know anyone and you’re chip knowledge is lacking. But before I joined and was just lurking in the background, I would come across your posts and they would stand out to me. You were always welcoming, helpful, encouraging, and you always made yourself approachable and available to new chippers. You sir are what this forum is (or should be) all about and your first 18 months set an example for all others to follow. Except maybe with not so many chips! And here’s to the hopes that your next 18 months will be just as exciting and rewarding as the first 18. Keep doing what you’re doing brother!

And concerning your sets, you and Brie’s collections are second to none. Kudos to the both of you for all the hard work, perseverance, and great taste in awesome chips. Looking forward to meeting you both at a meet up sometime down the road. Cheers!

Joe

@JustDave... your comment in your thread about understanding why people are building their collections and basically their chipping journey. It got me thinking, I only really posted pictures of my sets and not how they came to be.

I spent some time this morning going back through the cash sets and adding commentary on how they became part of the collection. Thanks for the suggestion, its probably long and boring but if you are interested, content was added.

I will find the time to do the same for the tourney sets.

Joe... I don't know how I never got a notification for this post... probably the best compliment I have ever read to anyone ever... messing with my heart strings brother!

Thank you very much brother!! Let's me know the effort I try to put into this hobby is being taken the right way!

The chips are far from the best, we are very happy with what we have managed to build with our budget and amazing help from this community like many others here. Many of us owe a debt that will probably never be repaid but we can pay it forward in help, knowledge and yes of course chips when you have the opportunity to pass some on.

It's all about being involved... I think many on the site would prefer Brie and I to be less involved... a recent post of mine with an altercation with Dave @BGinGA really got me thinking... you would think I can't stand Dave, but honestly I have a ton of respect for him in this hobby! I even recently asked Dave for help on a chip that I had no clue what it was and he was able to point me in the right direction.

We just have different approaches to things, this is his ball field as the sites top contributor, I am a new nobody... this particular altercation which I wrote a huge apology reply but never posted because I didn't want to continue thread crapping the new members post (I already did that enough!!) I was trying to be supportive. Not say everyone was wrong but just that there are nicer ways to comment that aren't damaging to those people just trying to get their foot in the door into this amazing hobby.

Dave I didn't like the High Horse comment. I was upset at the time and should have calmed down before responding and I truly apologize for the way I acted in my rebuttal. I understand why the comment was made and I do not plan to post in defense of others again. It wasn't my fight, there was no reason for me to get involved or to stir up a fight. I definitely could have worded my response differently in a supportive but less abrasive manner!

I think that @Poker Zombie reply on that thread was absolutely brilliantly worded and couldn't possibly been said better!

Thank you all for putting up with my long boring posts all the damn time, i wish I knew how to make short but to the point comments but that just not how my brain operates... I am a high school educated blue collar worked that chops wood for heat and an old falling apart pick up truck! But ai think there is a spot for me here in this hobby, maybe not on the same intellectual levels but I try and sometimes fall short, but I appreciate everything PCF is, and has to offer for anyone who wants to get into the hobby!

Definitely late to this thread buddy, but damn Ben....what amazing sets and a collection you and Brie have put together in just 18 months! Just amazing! Hope to sync up with you guys for a game sometime in the future! Damn you COVID-19. Lol it has increased my chip collection though lol

Awesome man, looking forward to reading it. It's one of the interesting things about WW's thread, aside from the amazing, only seen there, chips, but watching his tastes move around and what he focuses on at a time.

I like a lot of different hobbies that give people the opportunity to express their preferences, so cool to see how yours are expressed.

:jawdrop: *picking jaw up off the ground*

That is just ... incredibly bonkers, I ain't got the words! Suffice to say, you're inspiration for this new chipper haha

Keep up the good work! :nailbite:
Happy to help if you ever need anything. It's about pacing yourself which we have failed horribly. This hobby sucks some of us in and it's really hard to let up on the foot pedal. But Brie and I are slowing down a bit, trying to finish out what we have started a little at a time before possibly looking for more sets.

Again always around if you need advice, always looking for opportunities to give back to this amazing forum!
